S8 in my opinion is the greatest phone out right now, if your contract is up or you need a new phone, its perfect. But if you've already got an s7 edge, realistically there isn't much new warranting an upgrade unless you need more screen real estate. Love both the phones but if you've got the s7 edge, you know yourself its a monster, you should just wait for the s9.

well you could actually use the iris scanner cuze you are not gonna cover your face till the eyes right you are gonna leave your eyes so its best either way but for other phones you have to use your fingerprint which may or may not work if you wear a glove

If you've got an s7 edge, I reckon that there is no need to upgrade because the s8 is not much different from the s8 (except for the screen and software) but if you're coming from an older android phone or an iPhone (as I am) you should definitely upgrade. At the end of the day though, it's all completely up to the person.

The international variants will always be better than the US carrier brands. If you have the GS7E international, your really not considering an update based on a few minor changes, your doing it justs because you want too. The one thing I hate about Samsung smartphone reviews is that reviewers never mention how well Samsung has been in the past at correcting or updating their devices with software and firmware updates. If you have the international variants with the faster processor, you literally have a new device with Nougat. I have never had lag issues ever with any of my Samsung phones (All International). Maybe it's because I purchased them directly from Samsung...? My only gripe is and will always be with case makers, rather that is premium case makers. After one year there is not a single decent high end protective case for the S7 edge! I am using a pelican cloak which protects the back and body but not the screen. The only other full phone protector was Ghostek, but it was constructed very poorly. The only stable/proven screen protector I have used for all my high phones have been from Zagg! All my phones from the S2, S3, S5, and now S7E screens have survived high drops on concrete, falls down steps, falls down subway stairs meters deep, and even an attempt by 2 racist to broke my phone on purpose by sitting a arbor press on it and using the press for several hours-- GS5! Every phone I mentioned is still working without any problems. I gave them to new owners with the original Zagg screen protectors I bought with each phone at the time of purchase. I wish Zagg would get into the case making business. If it wasn't for Zagg, a company called Turtleback, and pelican I would not have decent protectors for my high-end phone purchase. Turtleback makes the only phone holder with a all metal belt clip and swivel to keep your phone from breaking off your side doing regular stuff. Otter box has not figure this out yet and frankly their products have been shytty since time of the GS3! The turtleback is a phone clip carrier that allows Your device to breath on your side. If your balls can't breath in skinny jeans why would you expect a 3600 Mah battery powered device to? I will finish with if I like high-end and will pay roughly $700 - $900 for a phone, there should be a $50 -$90 case somewhere to protect it. This is why I jump on people who bad mouth Zagg screen protectors....I know personally they have protected my phones $150 screens!

I got the S7 edge when it came out and it's been a great phone. I've taken good care of the battery in not letting the charge go below 40% or above 85% and not charging it with more than 1000 ma of current. My phone battery has never gotten excessively hot, I have an app that continuously monitors all these things, and so my battery life has not declined appreciably. For me, there is no justification in spending the extra money on a S8+, but I will look at the S9+ and Pixel 3 XL when they come out.

it's hot,it's new and if you need a status symbol phone then it's either the latest galaxy phone or the latest iphone,is it practical to buy with so little upgrades from the S7 edge...not really...obviously samsung have panic released a device becuase of last years failure with the note fire scandal,it's obvious that upper management needed to be appeased same as the stock holders....and if you have even the slightest bit of sense you will hold back a month or two upon release,not only for the usual price drop but because the S7 price,(new and second hand),will drop considerably. right now you can purchase a new or second hand one for around £350-450 here in london depending on memory size once the S8 is officially released i would take another hundred or so off that price another thing i find crappy about samsung is their ability to decide which CPU versions go to which regions...you either get the exynos or SD depending on where you are in the world nowadays i would prefer the SD myself as it will give you the ability to add a custom rom if that is what you desire and lastly saf if you bother to read this comment...have you factory reset the S7 and has this brought the performance and battery life back to it's original state or even near to it as these devices are essentially small computers and that's the first advice any tech person will give you if your p.c. or laptop is slowing down...would be to make a clean install of the OS maybe you can make a video about doing this and it's pro's n cons for an older degrading device

I bought my S7 Edge back in February knowing there would be an S8+, but I still got it because it's price dropped and it even then was heavy on my student funds, so I can only imagine another 200 GBP leaving me broke until the next term. Seeing the comparison here made me feel ensured about having made the right choice of phone after four years of Galaxy Ace II :) Faster processor, but same RAM, same rear camera, same level of waterproof, S7 Edge has more battery life, fairly similar resolution. With price taken into account as well, I really don't regret getting the S7 Edge for this year, and maybe for the next two/three. Also, next year when the S8+ drops like the S7 Edge did, there will be next the S9+, so either you pay extra 200 for a year of the best phone, or you pay 200 less and get the second best phone similar to the successor. I chose to go down the latter lane.

in terms of how much of an upgrade it is....Samsung is doing "Apple style" here. Benchmarks and speed tests already confirmed that S7 and S8 are essentially the same in terms of speed i.e. iPhone 7 still is a king of speed tests and RAM management. As an Apple fan (not fanboy) I appreciate "new" design and direction that Samsung is going. BUT I do not like Edge screens. It is a personal preference and I see no use or convenience of having it. Just adds up price and shatter likelihood if dropped on a side.

Stop obsessing over benchmarks, modern flagships are fast enough already. It looks like they went for efficiency with the new chips, so to power those large displays. AnTuTu shows the S8 right up there with the iPhone 7 anyway, and that's on a preproduction unit. Geekbench 4 looks very suspect with the way it rates the A10 chip.

For those moving to the S8 from the S7 Edge because of a "larger screen" ---do your Pythagorean math. Diagonal measurement means nothing with factoring in the aspect ratio of the screens. The S7 Edge is nearly 1/2 cm wider, providing not only a more comfortable viewing experience, but also almost the same useful viewing area. It is shy of the S8 by just around 1 square cm --- depending on how much of the gimmicky sloping edge you deem to be useful.

Samsung does the same thing all the time: they made S5. Then, they made the S6: a new design with not much upgrade from S5. Then, they made the S7: ''same'' design from S6 with better upgrades. Is it suspicious that Samsung drops the resolution to 1080 HD out of the box instead of its full potential display.... That means that the battery life sucks. I have no trust in Samsung anymore because they are playing games. I wouldn't be surprised if they gutted the returned Galaxy Note 7 and salvaged the iris scanner, speaker, camera, headphone jack, etc to be placed in the S8 to optimize profit. I have been a galaxy owner since the S3 but now I'm thinking of switching because of their bull shit. Probably their last innovative phones were the edge displays, Notes and the Galaxy S5. After that they seemed to just want to follow the iPhone path instead of their own. The Galaxy S6 was basically an IPhone clone. Then people complained and they changed it up with the S7 and edge. How come the camera is the exact same? No green 14 mega pickles, no duel camera, depth of field or zooom just the same and that is wrong. Also they need to optimize their phones, better ram management and take of the touch wiz layer on top of android.... maybe they need to drop android and create their own or get with Google to figure it out. We need to complain to Samsung that they need to stop with the bull and be leaders again and not followers. They need to bring back removable batteries or have a longer lasting battery. They need to bring back the remote function so I can be lazy and use my phone to control my TV. They need to fix the problems they been having with the optimization since the birth of the galaxy. They need to place the figure print scanner in a better position. They need to look at Moto and their Mods.The mods we can change the galaxy to our liking for example mod for a bigger battery, duel speakers, projector, game controls, boost speed mod, work profesion mods, projector, dsr camera mod, duel screen mod and the list goes on. Maybe even a 3d screen to watch and view 3d content without glasses. Really I don't know what they need to do they just need to do better than the S8 and S8 Plus cough stop with the iPhone naming at least Google switched it up with the Xl. Maybe S8 and S8 Tower or S8 Elite. Sorry about the rant.

Kowho Ojaide the S6 was not a copy of the iphone 6. a 2k display on a smartphone? also, people complained that samsung didn't look cool with the plastic backing, so Samsung had to go glass to be more premium. They listen to that choice and had to sacrifice for it. that's why the s5 is totally different from the s6 in terms of looks.

Ricky N Thank You Ricky for the reply. You have some great points from the plastic back of S5 to the change to the S6. The reason I said it was an IPhone clone was because Samsung followed I PHONE'S design loook. Some people may say that Apple took the look from HTC, but Samsung followed apple because they were popular at the time. The Galaxy S6 sealed their baterry similar to how Apple does their phone battery. Removing the option of expandable storage and only offering 3 storage sizes simlar Apple. The S6 also removed a lot of extra features too like the IR TV blaster and the water resistance. They basically took 2 steps back for removing those things. They also moved the head phone jack to the bottom exactly how Apple placed their head phone jack. They moved their speaker from the back to a similar position similar to the IPHONE. They went from a slide finger print from the S5 to an exact duplicate of Apple Touch ID with the S6. Aluminium case with a brushed metal finish similar to the IPhone 6. Also plastic antenna bands similar to Apple. The Galaxy also has protruding camera assembly like the IPhone 6. Even their inbox headphone has a white moulded earbuds similar to the IPHONE. So from the sides and bottom to the look and material makes the s6 so similar to the IPhone 6 making it a clone. The similarities are too much from the leap from the S5 to the s6. I hope you see the point I am making as well and hope this more detailed comparison helps.

Kowho Ojaide The S6 does have the IR blaster. While some of these may be true, they aren't copying Apple directly. They are copying other companies because like you said apple had copied other companies. The camera lens wasn't really a copy, because Samsungs was in the middle while apple has it in the corner

Yasser Piedi well, iPhone 7 plus is cheaper, has dual cameras, stereo speakers, iOS and better battery. And 1080p screen with great color reproduction. Higher res is only useful for VR which is still nothing great honestly. 7 plus is 100$ cheaper then s8 So it is appealing for many now. Honestly, s8 has only improved screen from s7 edge and cost 100$ more than iPhone! Wow...

But Still I don't want to sound like a Samsung fanboy, I phone's are usually faster, But when it comes to battery, customizing, display etc. Android is just way better than Apple...If I had an s7/s7 edge I wouldn't update...The thing I hate about the s8 is that the Physical button is gone...That is bs IMO

The only thing that is stopping me from pulling the trigger on this phone is the camera. I would be trading in my iPhone 7 plus for it. I also own an S7 Edge and greatly prefer the iPhone camera. Unless the software tweaks in the camera have some serious tricks up its sleeve I can't see this outshooting the iPhone.

Raveen Bikha understood, the way they're making it sound though is that they added tech almost like the Google pixel to process the photos better. we all know that distinct look the Google pixel camera has and some of the shots I've seen that are supposedly from the s8 have that same look which I quite like.

If you go out with your friends and family. Portrait Mode on 7 Plus can get way awesome pics than any other phone. And pics from main camera on 7 Plus are pretty good.

I still absolutely love my S7 edge!! I do not see much difference enough in the S8+ to upgrade except for the few listed. I do want as many voice commands for my phone though. Keeping my edge a new version comes out that can get up and walk over to me!

I never found the glass to be slippery on my S7 edge. In fact it was way less slippery than the metal back of my iPhone 6s or the previous plastic backed smart phones that I owned in the past.

supersaf.. you are the best review are the most unbiased I have ever seen so far definitely my favorite.. you probably know this but I will give you some advice about your S7 Edge battery. I've been fixing electronics for 30 years I'm a certified computer technician and network engineer with my own certified computer and phone repair shop. the worst thing you could ever do for any lithium ion battery is continuously Let It Go to zero!!!! you will decrease your battery life very quickly within the first year if you do that. that's why the fast charging is amazing never let your battery go below 25% if you can help it I keep mine over 30% I've had my phone for 13 months the Galaxy S7 Edge and I have not noticed almost any battery life difference in the nougat operating system also helps out a lot!! I have fast charging in my car, I have a battery that's a fast charger battery etc..... that's how I can keep it at 30% the S7 Edge charger so freaking fast....
