Samsung Galaxy S9+ Impressions After 1 Week!

After using the new Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus for about a week now, I wanted to share some further impressions I have. This includes something interesting about the new "Intelligent Scan" feature.

I think the s9 iris scanner light being one like that is intentional... Because it pulls your eyes to to it which increases success rate. The iPhone is not a iris scanner it's a dot projector, which flashes dots on the face to map it.

Lack of features is what drove me away from stock Android. So I don't understand the argument of having so many features being overwhelming. I could understand if they were all in your face but Samsung does a really good job in hiding them. Also the iris scanner is completely optional. Unlike the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy s9 still retained the fingerprint scanner which is what I prefer to use.

Exactly, ... I traded my previous S9+ for a Pixel 2 XL just for the hype and realized how boring, limited and lackluster stock Android is.... got rid of that and got another S9+.

Not such a good review this time. Some of the comments are closer to whinges than actual issues. For example, complaining about having too many options and features on a phone in 2018 doesn't make much sense. Seeing the iris scan light as annoying is also a questionable comment. Perhaps Samsung should add an on and off option... but oops that would add another "overwhelming" feature to the phone...😉😉

You can open the notification panel with just a simple swipe down from anywhere on the screen. Settings\Display\Home Screen\Quick-open notification panel

Android is about options, I use Google assistant for calling/texting contacts playing music on Spotify and bixby for settings or getting to certain areas of the os. I love having both because they each have their own strenghts.

Steven Nickels i remember a KZbin reviewer a while back did a comparison and said the exact same thing. Google is best for searching information and can only do one command at a time with the phone whereas bixby has it in multiple commands and bixby vision in the camera. So i definitely agree with you. As much as i love android i gotta say Google has a lot of people spoiled. The moment an oem tries to do something different or unique it's met with the same criticism of it being useless or crap or oh why have this when you have the Google equivalent? Androids strength is in its diversity not just in the apps of course. But i feel like quite a bit of the android fanbase contradict that very strength in favor of everything being the same ( pixel-like).

I think it highly likely that the infrared blinking rapidly increases accuracy. As a GS9+ user as well, I find it annoying, but I think it more important to maintain security than ease/comfort.

correct me if im wrong but i dont think the Iphone X has an iris scanner, just a 3D facial recognition that uses infra red, and thats why it isnt visible to the naked eye

So in the galaxy S8 and S8 plus came out and people talk about the audio no one talked about the ability to customize the audio to your particular hearing. Does this one have that same teacher? On the galaxy S8 plus that I had it had a setting where it would give you a 32nd hearing test. And it would modify the music and the balance of the music to match your responses so that it was customized your personal hearing. That’s what I’m asking about.

Mate, you can turn off the bixby button in the settings, also there are some third party apps that give you the ability to remap it to Google assistant or other, find it hard to beleive a techy guy wouldn't of looked into this after a weeks use 🤔

Whether you use bixby or not, you need to register to disable it. And you can then use a third party app to remap the button, or just have it do nothing

There's something in the settings I used when I had it. You go to your app menu when you swipe up. You go to settings. Then you click where the app menu only opens when you swipe up and now when you swipe down from anywhere in the screen it'll bring down notifications

You don't find any interest in Bixby but for other users like I, we find it too be very useful, much more than Google assistant, so you better not state on that point, each person has a different advice, to me Bixby is a good feature and I hope samsung will continue developing it

You being serious?! I really thought you were different to all other tech KZbinrs out there... What is your problem!? Firstly the IR light, what's wrong knowing that it's working. Telling you where to look for the Iris scanner - is that so bad? Bixby... How on earth do you expect it be useful when you're not helping to make it better!? It can control SO many things if you just gave it a chance. Especially quick commands. Really... "overwhelming" features is what I expected to hear from an iPhone user.. 😒 I don't understand people's criticisms over this phone. I've had no issues about any of it, except sometimes reaching to the top of the screen which I'll happily live with. I'm not being a Samsung "fan boy" as I still think Google takes better shots and has better camera results. I think AR emoji is terrible too.

I haven't used a pixel ever so I wouldn't know the software experience but I have myself used lineage and other os which I think are quite better than touch wiz in terms of speed. But Samsung trying to put all kinds of features in a single os is kinda praiseworthy. You really need to go through the phone more because you didn't mention the swipe down feature of opening notification panel. I do own s9+ and I have noticed the typical scroll stutter associated with Samsung but it doesn't matter much because the phone is quite fast. Camera isn't great for selfies. Pixel is still the camera king. Samsung might have better hardware but the dynamic range and software processing of pixel is better imo. And I never found the iris scanner to be annoying tbh. Idk why you dislike it.

Samsung literally replicates the features of iPhone. Catch up...and then they say do what you can’t, the next big thing is already here. Well I’ve been doing what s8 can’t since the iPhone X. Stereo speakers, Animoji, Face ID, Brighter display, Siri, Live messages, Live Photo’s (which Samsung tries replicate by making short videos), Touch ID, iCloud (Samsung cloud), Apple Pay, DCI-P3 Wide Colour display, Face Time, copied Apple designed image signal processor by combining layers of the same photo to reduce noise on the S9, capacitive Home Button, 3D Touch icons (you can long press icons on Samsung to get shortcuts), landscape home screen, portrait mode, 2X telephoto lens, copied having a curved glass panel since the 6 and even having glass backs. They’ve also copied the iPhones camera UI, having a landscape mode home screen, and made their OLED brighter since the iPhone X had a brighter display and was rated the best. This has to be a joke Samsung Say we use Samsung displays, Apple still designed and engineered their own displays. They were rated the best displays. They have True Tone, 3D Touch, higher brightness, the best colour accuracy, lower reflectivity and have had a P3 display before you. Why does Samsung rely on Google, they rely on Android. Make your own software. What are they afraid of? Why do you rely on Snapdragon (Qualcomm)? How can you be innovative like Apple when you cant create your own software. How unprofessional, and desperate can you be to mock Apple for the “notch”. You are mimicking Apple for being able to do bezel-less better and giving you extra screen space. It’s much better than having a useless black bar. And yup your 960 FPS slo-mo can only shoot for a small amount of time and in disgusting 720p quality. Great Samsung. And even your latest 845 processors fail to outperform Apple. Your Face ID fails to be as revolutionary. The s9 is a cheap knock off iPhone X replicate. And yeah, that infinity display has a bottom bezel. Weren’t able to remove it? Or is that the one feature you will boast about next year for a whole hour. Watching that unpacked event was so boring, it was just waffle waffle waffle waffle. You mock Apple for a headphone jack and then you say wireless is the future and mock Apple for not (historically) having wireless charging. I have AirPods - it’s AWESOME! And then you copy almost every single iPhone feature year in year out! Rumours are that Samsung are still trying to make a 3D facial recognition. A technology that’s 2.5 years Ahead of its time. I got S9+ a couple day ago thanks to my sister, and I have to say it an amazing phone. I am keep this phone permanently, so I am not changing it even if new android phone come out unless it breaks otherwise no. I am new to Android I had an iPhone for about 2 years. I would recommend this phone to anyone who want a decent phone

One thing i would point out about bixby timbo , if you don't take the time to set it up , it won't do anything useful , And as far as pressing the button goes ....... much like when buying a pixel , to get your feeds up and running you have to set them up first . I press the bixby button on my s8+ and it loads up very fast. I might add i use Google and bixby , bixby does things google cannot , just the same as some things bixby cannot do . Neither is perfect. I would agree with the button placement even though I'm used to it ,it does take more work than it should to distinguish between volume and bixby.

Isn't the flashing red light an infared light, not an iris scanner? The iris scanner is separate from the light as the iPhone X only uses the infared to assist Face ID.

Tim Samsung have always added more features - some features have now been added to stock android. Please set S9 Plus up as your device - what works for you. If you just like stock android - this device is not for you as you will have to switch every added feature off.
