I pre-ordered the S9 because in markets like mine (Indonesia) Pixel 2 or its larger sibling is hard to come by. Even if you can get it, it would be imported and very expensive. Oneplus 5T also costs considerably more here. Pushing it closer to the S9 category, as far as pricing.

If it's like my S7 Edge, he means it's not quite a scratch or a smudge, but there's a spot on the glass that isn't perfect anymore. I don't really notice it when I'm using my phone, but sometimes the oil from my fingers will get stuck in the little mark and I'll get that distracting rainbow-like effect. Mind you, it took a year or more for that spot to show up, the glass on my S7E was perfect without a screen protector for all that time. So either he's not taking care of the device (filming so close to things on fire is probably a good indication of that) or he got a defective unit.

Andy the Cat Yes, tremendously. It covers the oleophobic coating and prevents direct contact of the oils or elements that over time, erode it. So yeah, get a screen protector if you want to preserve the device

Tine Woodbe I had it with my note 8 where dust went into the case and pressed into the olephobic coating and caused like dot and dust marks that wouldn't come off. Safe to say I rock a dbrand, case and screen protector on my s9+.

I've had mine for over 6 mts now and can honestly say it's the best phone I've owned. My only set back is a minor screen burn but that's to be expected with an amoled screen. But other then that hiccup, it's still as snappy and the camera is on point.

Great review. I just got my Galaxy S8 last October, so there isn't enough new here for me personally. But, I appreciate that Samsung didn't deviate from the bezeless design and layout previously established. S9 feels like it ironed out the few design weaknesses and rough edges of the S8. Love the design, and the aesthetic of glass on glass bodies. That being said, also feels like annual iterative approach to smartphones is nearing its end. The technology has been proliferated into such a place, not much left to accomplish. Any minor indeficiency like battery life or camera options can be alleviated by apps or accessories.

The most impressive feature of S9/S9 Plus is the Dual/Variable camera Aperture which sure will result in the best Mobile Photography. And thanks they included Stereo Speakers and 3.5mm Headphone jack. I don't know about the AR Emoji but 960fps slow motion seems great.

Excellent review, thanks. Great detail, good presentation. Regarding the S9 in particular though, I'd have to say that they still get a FAIL from me WRT the "trying to please everyone" axiom that you mentioned. That is because the phone appears to retain its "edge", something that debuted with the S6 IIRC, but don't quote me on that. I was an avid Samsung supporter and consumer until they began producing the "edge" phones exclusively with the S8. Prior to that you could get the S7 (for example) in either the "edge" or the "flat faced phone" variants. I always chose the "flat faced phone" because the "edge" design irritated me considerably. So when Samsung decided to forego the "flat faced phone", they lost me as a customer. With much dread, weariness and dismay I was forced to go to the dark side and chose an IPhone. I did that because the other Android products (at the time anyway) just didn't have the feature set that the Samsungs did and their interface was different enough to put me off. So now I am in mac-phone hell with a horrid interface that I loathe. And it appears that it is here I will remain, unfortunately, because Samsung doesn't appear at all interested in reviving the non-"edge" design. For me, the S7 (NOT THE FRIGGIN "edge" MODEL BS!!!) was the best phone I ever had. I regret fully, completely and unreservedly the day I gave mine up. For this reason I must offer my $0.02 and that is that Samsung stinks!

Quite a lot of updates but let me put it this way. I am a Galaxy Note lover. I wanted the original but the Galaxy Note 2 was only months away so I waited for it. 2 years later it was having problems with phone calls so I bought a Galaxy Note 4 and have had that ever since. If my Note 4 wasnt starting to play up then I wouldnt be getting a new phone at this time. I am hoping it will last until the Note 9 is out and that is what I will be getting. I cannot see a good reason to go from a Note 4 to a Galaxy S series phone, ever.

Why not 4000 mAh battery? I don't understand. Mate pro 10 is much smaller phone and still has it. I was excited about s9 plus, but battery life has always been poor in every galaxy s series phones. Going to mate 10 pro, much cheaper, no fancy / useless features, good battery life. Only thing I don't like mate 10 pro it hasn't 3.5 mm headphone jack. Wireless charging I never use and screen is good enough.

I plan to get the S9+ and "stockify" it. US Cellular has no powerful stock android phones but I'll do the next best thing. Remove\disable all bloat and Samsung software and replace it all with the Google equivalent including the launcher, camera and so on. Though since the phone is made of glass on both sides, I wonder how fragile it is.

I actually find Live Focus on the Note8 to do a pretty bad job of knowing what to blur and where to focus. The edges of bodies, heads, and hair are always fuzzy. As other S9 reviewers have stated, using the f/1.5 and Selective Focus with the main shooter does a much better job with "portrait" type photos than Live Focus with the secondary camera. Moral of the story, that secondary camera should by no means be a reason for getting the S9 Plus over the S9.
