PFC: Power Factor Correction? I see this term in PC power supply really thanks for the video it is full of knowledge for me as always
@crazyphil77824 жыл бұрын
Yes, it corrects the Power Factor of a load connected to an AC input: Essentially, a Power Factor measures, in the simplest possible terms, to what extent a load resembles a simple resistor : AC current and voltage are in phase, and the current/voltage relationship is linear. When a load doesn’t appear as a resistor, it consumes reactive power (current/voltage not in phase, more capacitive or inductive load), or absorbs a non linear and/or unbalanced current (like a simple full-bridge rectifier - the current only goes through around the peak value, and the bridge is never perfectly symmetrical).
@crazyphil77824 жыл бұрын
Further, a PFC is nothing but a type of Boost converter in a closed-loop. The current loop is very important, as it post-regulates current to resemble a perfect sine.
@hightttech4 жыл бұрын
@@crazyphil7782 : what is your opinion of Sorin's repair?
@hammershigh4 жыл бұрын
The ONLY purpose of PFC is to prevent "backfiring" of L/C components (phase-disturbance) to the grid.
@crazyphil77824 жыл бұрын
hammershigh absolutely not. PFC < 1 implies reactive power consumption and/or and strain to your power components (power switches). It also disturbs the grid by injecting harmonics into the grid if current is deformed (non-sinusoidal).

Speaking about power factor correction circuit when it is inside in a switch mode power supply it is a boost mode circuit that choppers and raises the rectified dc voltage to a higher level.The reason for that is that needs a very small capacitor for filtering the higher voltage which has very high frequency compared to the mains 100HZ bridge rectified.The higher voltage leads to a lower duty cycle for the main circuit of the switch mode power sypply so there is less stress for the entire circuit and lower current consuption due to the higher input voltage.And because there is a coil for the voltage boosting there is 90 degree of phase difference between voltage and current simply because the PFC circuit is a booster circuit,a dc/dc converter.And its operation is totally different as a circuit from the PFC of the electric conventional motors,because makes phase difference on purpose when boosts the voltage but for the AC mains voltage makes no difference or sense at all.
@GeorgeGeorge-xj2bc4 жыл бұрын
@Andrew_koala If you had a little knowledge in elementary electronics you may already know that a full bridge rectified ac mains voltage of 50HZ or 60Hz or any frequency always doubles the frequency,mr gramatically correct professor of the english language.And 100HZ compared to 100KHZ frequency operation of the pfc the ratio is 1000.

Seriously though, I have been watching your videos for about three years and have since repaired quite a few laptops following your techniques. However, I thought you might be interested to hear about my exploits in trying to fix a HP Mini notebook; I determined there was short on the main 19V power rail and even tracked it to being on the 19v side of one of the lower power supplies; one of the "Always on" power supplies. But I couldn't pinpoint it in the end. I tried the "power supply" method and unfortunately it didn't even warm the board at all!. 5A and the board stayed cold! In the end I got so frustrated that I started removing coils to try to isolate the fault but there were too many possibilities for the fault that in the end I gave up and bought a replacement motherboard. I even removed the CPU because the short seemed to be in that power supply, but the short still existed without the CPU on the board! Obviously the short, wherever it is, was so perfect that it provided no resistance and therefore generated no heat anywhere! I even soldered the power supply to the shorted rail and left it discharging 5A (at about 5V) for a long time, with NO HEAT generated anywhere! I wondered whether you might have given up too, or whether you might have had another strategy in this case? Thank you for all your videos, which have helped me understand electronics alongside my other studies!
