26:03 Is the Watch 5 Pro Worth It?
Intro: This is the brand new Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. And in this video we will take a first look at the heart rate accuracy, sleep tracking performance, GPS tracking and oxygen saturation measurements of this new watch from Samsung. In the last weeks, I already shared several videos in which I performed extensive tests on the standard version of the Galaxy Watch 5. However, many of you have been asking how the Pro version compares to the baseline model. So, in this video we will take a first look at the sports and health tracking performance of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. And, honestly, the Watch 5 Pro definitely has some advantages over the normal Watch 5. However, if spending the extra money is actually worth it, is something you will have to decide for yourself, and I hope this video will help you make that decision.
Conclusions: In terms of sports and health tracking, I get the impression that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro performs about the same as the normal Galaxy Watch 5, and as we saw in my other tests. This also means it is not performing that differently from the older Galaxy Watch 4. Now, future firmware updates might change this, because we have seen updates make major differences in the performance of the Galaxy Watch 4. Still, if you do not care about the battery life, the navigation features, or the different look of the Watch 5 Pro, you might as well get the much cheaper Watch 5 or even the Watch 4. However, if money is not an issue, I do quite like the look of the Watch 5 Pro, especially if you replace the strap with this brown one.
Now, let’s take a step back, and see if I would actually recommend the Watch 5 pro in general, or even the Watch 5 for that matter. Well, from a sports and health tracking perspective they are OKish watches, with good heart rate tracking for stationary cardio exercises, and the SpO2 sensor on the Watch 5 Pro also shows some promise. However, there are definitely better watches out there. I would mostly consider getting one of these watches if you also care about the smartwatch features themselves, and your focus is not mainly on sports and health. Therefore, based on my experience so far, overall I would give the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Update From what I said before that if you want more accuracy turn the watch around on the back of your wrist give that a try Make sure it's tight. The watch band makes a difference!!! I got a wider watch band. A rugged Velcro hook and loop. The entire watch band is wider not just where it connects. IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE IN ACCURACY FOR THE HEART RATE!! Maybe because the watch is very heavy when you don't have stability it may rock from side to side while you're exercising or lifting weights. The real issue is when you're moving around, boxing, lifting weights etc. The band keeps it stable and tight very little movement and rocking. Sometimes I wouldn't get good readings even with the blood oxygen measurements. It would work maybe 70% of the time. Same thing with the heart rate. NOW IT WORKS EVERY TIME!! EVEN THE BODY COMPOSITION WORKS BETTER!! I tighten it up when I'm working out. Then I undo the Velcro and loosen it up a little bit walking around normally. Still works great both ways. My findings were confirmed with the polar Hot rate monitor, and my FRONTIER X IN MY OPINION THE BEST HEART RATE LIVE ECG HEART STRAP MONITOR WITH INFORMATION YOU CAN'T GET FROM REGULAR HEART STRAPS ABOUT YOUR HEART GALAXY 5 WATCH PRO WAS PRETTY DEAD ON!! Peace out God bless!!

This agrees with what I've found trying various trackers. The Galaxy watch to me seems to be the best I've tried at detecting when you are awake. It most consistently records middle of the night and early awakenings and seems to fairly accurately detect when you fall asleep too. if you are most concerned with total sleep time and tracking insomnia, it seems quite good for that. However, sleep stage tracking seems to always have been quite bad and it tends to report a VERY low amount of deep sleep. For me personally I've stuck with the galaxy because generally tracking total sleep time and wake periods is my main concern and I put little faith in the sleep stage tracking.

Hey! I feel like you should revisit this watch once again because Samsung finally enabled the temperature sensor on this watch. I believe the temperature sensor was disabled when it was initially launched and they turned it on somewhere around April of this year. It should lead to very different results?

First of all, thanks for your sharing. You are very particular about experimental data. It is the first time to see such a sharing. It is really special. I think the battery increase of the galaxy watch 5 pro this time is a big improvement in the smart watch. In the past, the smart watch had a small battery, and various functions could hardly be fully turned on, so it was impossible to fully experience the convenience brought by the smart watch. But the watch 5 pro provides a larger battery, which not only increases the usage time, but you no longer need to worry about which function consumes power, and can fully experience the convenience of a smart watch.

You should show the average heart rate of each session as well. The watch(like all watches) undoubtedly loses some peaks on the hr but at least watch 4 catches the average hr very well. It's usually 3-5 beats off when I compare with the polar h10. You should consider this because the peaks don't last much during the session. The average heart rate is most important for ordinary people, like you and me. Of course, there is another conversation when we talk about pro athletes. I think it's much more important to examine the distance and the pace during running and generally the GPS. Watch 4 is not so good at it. Usually is shows 10"/per km slower than the polar, which is indeed significant.

I've had a Galaxy Watch 5 pro now for a few months. I've been using Samsung watches since the first one came out, traded to the watch 3 for free as an add-on to my last Galaxy phone, then got the 5 pro for around $100 with a trade of my watch 3 when I upgraded that phone. I'm mainly concerned with its synchronization with my phone for calls and messages. They only health feature that really matters to me is heart rate, since I have bradycardia, so I like to keep track to make sure it doesn't go too low. I love the look of the 5 pro. I get 3-4 days out of the battery, and it's very sturdy. It's a little bulky, but I don't even really notice that. I do keep track of steps every day, but I'm not that concerned with the accuracy of any of the other health features other than out of general interest. For me, the integration with all my other Samsung devices and the low cost when purchased with my phone and tablet made it a better choice than any of the alternatives that work with Android. The Apple watches were never even a consideration since I've never owned Apple anything.

Excellent covering the specs up front, and your experience with the battery autonomy. I believe this will make your channel appeal to even more people. Perhaps you could add an image of all the ratings you give for the features tested, and the overall score, since you quantify them all. Four days battery life, wow! Ouch for the sleep tracking, in particular the deep sleep stage which is the one I'm most interested in. This stage is better tracked by chance than by the 5 Pro, it seems. Unfortunately the Dreem 2 is no longer for sale for consumers. If you have a chance please consider testing the Sleep As Android app, which is a Wear OS compatible software, which could present an alternative for the Samsung (and other Wear) watches.

I would love some input from you and the followers on your channel about advice to let my Samsung S21 Ultra connect to in my opinion a more attractive option the Huawei smart watch. I tried to connect my watch fit to my S21 Ultra and failed. I still find their design so much more attractive. And according to your hard work, so much more effective in health tracking. In your expert opinion is it even feasible to connect a Huawei watch to a Samsung phone in the United States? My watch fit original, connected to my mate 20x global version flawlessly. I never could get it to work with my S21 Ultra.

I have a few questions on your methodology Do you reapeat your tests on each device to ensure reliability? Do you test devices on other device users to ensure - inter rater reliability? Skin tone is also a factor on these light based sensors. You are rating these devices against the Polar heart monitor. Where is the data to show that it is the gold standard of Heart rate measurements? Can this data be classified as scientific if it is measured on one person by one person?

Love and appreciation from India. I really admire the work you put in to make content like this. Reviewers here in India do not even go for a 5k run with the watch and share the basic metrics in their reviews. Some commented here that they've changed their decision to buy this specific smart watch because they feel the sensors in this aren't good enough. My case is the opposite. Galaxy watches may not be the best fitness tracking devices out there, but it's really hard to find a smart watch that can match the other smart features that the galaxy watches offer. (Body Composition Measurement, for example) Besides that, I'm not an athlete fighting for gold medal in Olympics for my country ☺️ I'm more than happy with approximate values that are meaningful. Once again, congrats for making in-depth data mining like this. I'm now waiting for Onam (Local festival here in Kerala, India) bumper lottery results to check if my mom will get the first price, for her to buy this watch for me ☺️

Thanks for a very in depth review. I have this watch and do enjoy it but certainly take the health metrics with a grain of salt. Helpful to point you in the right direction but absolutely a plus/minus to certain metrics. As shown in the video, one in particular is your oxygen saturation. Take the score that the watch gives you then add 1-2 and that will be more accurate. Just measured mine at total rest (healthy) and it gave 96%. Add two: 98%, ya that's about right for me.

Hello, I have a question. I am using the PolarH10 as a baseline. Comparing treadmill runs, yoga, and intense weightlifting between the whoop 4 (wrist) and the Watch 5 Pro, I am finding the Watch 5 Pro more accurate for the real time HR as well as post analysis ave and max HRs. I am using MAPMYRUN with the H10, the Whoop App, and the watch tracking apps. I display the H10 and Whoop on a split screen and compare to the watch display for real time HRs. The biggest trend is both the watch and whoop are slow to catch high HRs and if the HR drops quickly, the wrist devices miss the peak. For the exercise summary, the Watch 5 is consistently and considerably more accurate. I did receive a Watch Pro update about a month ago, prior to trying the whoop. Are you considering another Watch 5 pro test with most recent updates? Or is there something I am missing. Based on your charts, I was expecting the whoop to be much better than the results I am seeing. By the way, love your channel and it has been crucial for my decisions!

I hope that you'll make a video about Fitbit Sense 2, too. It would be nice to compare Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 with Fitbit Sense 2.

Can you test the sleep tracking based on "Sleep as android" app and its agreement with EEG? Sleep as android has been in the market for years and I think it's (or should be) one of the more accurate tracking algorithms for wear OS watches

Really seems like it's all about fit and variables like that. I'd love to see some tests with different band styles. Maybe try to isolate the variable by getting bands of the same circumference where you can choose more than just where the holes are pre placed. Something I've noticed about people who have an apple watch actually get skin irritation because it is pressed so hard into their wrist.

I really can't understand how that is the conclusion you've managed to draw from this.

@@erlendkristiansen4664 it's called isolating variables. The scientific method. If they all had the same placement and pressure on the wrist, how would the results change? These devices work off of good contact with the skin and a band that isn't infinitely adjustable won't give the best contact. If you think they wouldn't, pause the video and inspect it for yourself.

@@erlendkristiansen4664 Most of these high end devices use similar sensors which leave the factory calibrated and tested. These are not camera sensors for different companies to have different interpretation of the values, they have to more or less them same. The compass in all our devices is going to point the same direction with reasonable accuracy if its of good quality no matter which company uses it. The large varienace in these tests of different high end watches might simply come down to fitment, user pattern and use of statistical tools without any statistical model which accounts for all these factors, and more importantly the lack of sample variety and numbers. But then if we try to do all these things then it becomes a laboratory test that the manufactures would have done anyway. But then lab tests are good for labs because in the wild these magic sensors won't do any magic, they just be becomes unreliable. We could go on and on about this but the bottom line is if these devices can measure with reasonable accuracy of say 80 percentage or something, that should be good enough if they are using the same senor that's available in the market. Only when one if these manufactures comes out with some revolutionary technology that's exclusive to them we can go into that high territory of accuracy and try comparing them.

Looks that way because the results seem too wild with the tag scientific on it. Like some man said numbers said out without mentioning their uncertainty is scientifically useless.

I am researching all options for 24/7 data collection of fitness, spo2, and sleep data. I currently us a Fitbit Versa 2 and looking to upgrade. Seems the Oura Ring and Fitbit series the only gadgets for me due to the Samsung and Apple watches having such poor battery life. Not sure if the Apple Watch Ultra will be useable for >24 hrs at a time using all apps per day.
