In this video I complete an in-depth review of the Samsung Z Fold 5 including some of my likes, dislikes, and meh experiences I had with it, as well as some things I think it's missing compared to my iPhone 14 Pro Max and some things I wish my iPhone 14 Pro Max had that the Fold 5 can do.
Please feel free to comment below with your thoughts on the Samsung Z Fold 5 and any experiences you’ve had with it or what you think of folding phones in general, I'd love to hear from you all on these awesome devices!

As it turns out, Netflix was just being blocked from connecting by my ISP and/or Alienware router. Once I connected the Fold 5 to another network the Netflix app loaded instantly.

On the different apps for the same thing, andriod gives you the choice of which app you want to use. Once you decide which one you like, you delete the other. You can adjust how bright the always on display is, and you can customize what shows up, such as pictures

Love the review. On the fold5, and other Samsung phones, there's a setting you needed to switch on to make the screen stay on as long as you are looking at the screen, which makes it ignore the screen timer as long as you are watching the screen. It also has the global search function that you were talking about, pull down from the top with two fingers, and there's a global search function at the top of the screen which works just like you wanted

Thank you I really appreciate it! And good to know thank you! I didn’t realize about the screen timer setting, I’ll definitely have to look into that. But wow I didn’t realize you could pull down with two fingers and get a global search function, I’ll definitely have to give that a try, thank you!

When you have a fingerprint sensor this good and responsive, no reason to use face unlock imo.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
That’s a good point, the fingerprint sensor has been very responsive! Honestly I think I’m just not used to the fingerprint reader being on the side of the phone, it’s more awkward to me than just having it in the middle of the screen (which obviously I get why they didn’t do that here), but also I’m just used to face unlock from iPhone so that’s why I enabled it on my Fold 5.

I've found the fingerprint sensor to be pretty unreliable randomly the face ID seems to work much more consistently and it's more convenient
@chadd.7816
@chadd.7816 9 ай бұрын
@@AC-im9oe maybe it's how you registered your fingerprints or something with the Fold 5. On my Fold 4 a split second after even touching my phone to pick it up it's already unlocked where the Face ID takes much longer and then you have to angle it towards for face. I've also got my index finger and thumb each registered twice, which is recommended to help with it detecting your fingerprints, but to each their own.
@AC-im9oe
@AC-im9oe 9 ай бұрын
@chadd.7816 Yeah, I've had to register the same thumb 3 times just to have it unlocked every time. Maybe my thumb is the issue

Absolutely! And I totally get that, I really had my hopes up that Apple was finally going to announce a folding phone at the September Keynote last Tuesday (since Google did earlier this year and they always seem to release things within a year of each other) but I guess I’ll just have to keep waiting and hoping! Either way though hopefully you have a good experience switching to the Fold, you’ll have to let me know if it ends up being worth the switch for you! I’d imagine it probably will be, that inner screen is just amazing, such a bummer going from that huge inner screen back to the normal slab phone of the 14 Pro Max.

Samsung has that feature that doesn't turn off the screen if you are looking at it, it is disabled by default. And for me the auto-brightness is perfect, and I even use the extra-dim mode at night, it is my understanding that with auto-brightness and adaptive brightness on after manually adjusting it on certain conditions it should remember your preferences and the next time you are in a place with a similar light levels should apply a similar brightness. And the screen ratio of the inside screen is perfect for watching Star Trek TNG.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Oh really? I’ll have to look into that, maybe I missed that in settings. I wonder why it’s disabled by default, maybe to save battery? But that’s fair, I like my screen a bit brighter than most people (except at night when I have the screen literally at 0 brightness) so I get what you mean about using extra-dim mode at night, I do that too. But oh wow that’s interesting, I guess I didn’t try setting auto brightness and then adjusting it and seeing if it stayed that way or not, that’s a really good point. Oh for sure, I totally agree! I loved watching all the Star Trek shows on that inner screen, seriously amazing.

I'm in Sydney Australia, and Netflix works just fine on my Galaxy Fold 5. I've also checked Disney+ and Amazon Prime videos, all work well. Not sure if your Netflex subscription limits you to a limited number of devices. Or might be some other settings issue 🤔
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Interesting, I wonder if maybe it’s my ISP or something. I wondered about the device limit too, but it never even got to the sign in page for Netflix, it just would load show the Netflix logo for 3+ minutes and then say “unable to connect to Netflix servers” or something like that and wouldn’t load, so I never even was able to try signing in. I’ll try again here in a bit and see if it works now or not, maybe it was a temporarily bug or something.

I know a lot of people are telling you this is a great review, and in some ways it is... but there is far too many things that you just didn't know about and decided to mark against the phone just because you didn't know how to do them, for example, the global search, you just swipe up instead of down, and it's right at the top of the app drawer, with results for everything you mentioned, including email, photos, and web, along with much more. Another example is the brightness, you wanted to phone to adjust to your setting while still using the auto brightness, it actually does that, just adjust it on the fly with auto enabled and it remembers your setting for similar light conditions. Similarly the complaint about not being able to navigate videos with one hand is just wrong, Samsung includes a whole suite of video controls to use one hand that work on everything from Vimeo to KZbin, to (ironically) pornhub. You just didn't take the time to learn how to use them. There were many more points like this throughout your video that I cant be bothered to list.... My point is that if you were going the other direction, from samsung to apple, there would be FAR more complaints about missing features and unintuitive UI. There were many valid complaints here too, for example, Samsung not having a dedicated section in the theme store for folding phones.... but in general, if you attempt to do another paradigm shift video like this, I would highly recommend you put a bit more effort into actually learning the software instead of just expecting it to work like Apple... Because as someone who switched from apple years ago for the samsung ecosystem, but continues to use Apple hardware and OS for work, etc... Most of this video just comes off as extremely uninformed, and a bit asinine.

Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it and I’ll definitely work harder for future videos to do a more thorough investigation into the device and its features, because you’re right I definitely missed a good amount of things in this review. And I definitely understand that no review (and no one) is perfect, but there’s definitely some things I should have researched further before publishing this video, like how to do the global search from the App drawer or how the auto-brightness is supposed to adjust based on how you manually set it in certain situations. Thanks again for the information, and I’ll be sure to do better next time!

Great review. Maybe the best one on youtube. If you will have a chance can you show an extended example of webbrowsing on this phone? I have watched like 20 reviews of this phone and literary no one shows web browsing on internal screen. I don't know why. Everyone only show multitasking on split screen. Can you compare mobile and desktop mode when browsing and show how the same webpages look on Fold5 and normal slab phone? This type of comparisons are nowhere to be found. Is gmail optimized for larger inner screen?
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Thank you I really appreciate it! And web browsing on the inside screen was totally fine and worked great! I used it a lot actually for research and for looking stuff up for this video, but I specifically noticed that because of the large screen Google Chrome (I didn’t try Samsung’s “Internet” app) perfectly adjusted all the sites to show perfectly in full screen and looked great using the whole display! That’s a great thought, I didn’t try switching between mobile and desktop modes to see how each looked on different sites, I’ll have to test that out and see! And yes Gmail was, I used that a bunch on the phone and thought it looked great full screen. And actually I didn’t really have a single app that I used on the Fold that wasn’t optimized to use the full inner screen! I’ve seen that it’s a common “issue” on the Google Pixel Fold that some apps don’t resize to fill the entire inner screen and just end up looking like the normal app view with black bars on either side. I think the Fold 5 takes any app that isn’t optimized and just kind of stretches it to fit the full inner screen, which sometimes could look weird (like in the clip where I show plants vs zombies) but overall worked great. I know the KZbin Studio app on the Fold 5 was full screen on the inner screen (which I was so happy about and loved using) but on the Pixel Fold it doesn’t do full screen on that inner screen and is just the normal “slab-sized” version of the app, so I think that also kind of showcases how the Fold is much better at optimizing content for the inner screen size. Hope that helps!

That’s definitely fair! And I get that Android is clearly much more customizable than iOS, but I guess the main reasons I pointed some of them out is that on an $1,800 phone (regardless of whether it’s iOS or android) you shouldn’t have to dig through settings to “fix” things right out of the box.

Inner camera is for zoom & you use the front or back camera for selfies.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
That’s a fair point and after reading your comment I tested that and I completely agree. That being said, while trying to take a selfie using the outer camera it was definitely more challenging than just taking a selfie on the inside camera. Holding the phone while open from one side and also trying to touch the camera button on the right screen without jiggling or shaking the phone and messing up the photo was pretty difficult for me, but that could just be just a me problem. Obviously it’s not impossible, but I think it would be pretty difficult to actually do if you’re out and about or just trying to take a quick selfie with your kids like I was. I think that’s definitely not an idea situation vs just putting a better camera on the inside, especially on an $1,800 phone. But that’s just my opinion! Thanks for the info though, I appreciate it!

@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information! It definitely could be the mindset that I have coming from normally using a non-folding phone/iPhone, but generally if I want to take a selfie on a phone I just open the camera app, tap the switch camera button, and then take a picture. It just seems like a bit more work to have to “open the camera app, press the button to switch to the external cover screen, turn the phone around, and then unlock the outer screen to use the shutter button there” every time you want to take a selfie. Like I don’t take a ton of selfies, but it just seems like a lot more steps is all. Either way though, you’re right the inner camera is definitely fine for video calls, and using the rear camera for selfies means you definitely get better selfies since it’s using the main rear cameras, so that’s definitely a better end result, even if it takes more steps.

Yeah you’re definitely right! I think doing it that way definitely has its pros and cons, like the pictures look GREAT since it’s using the main lens so I love that, but it’s definitely not as easy or ergonomic as normal selfies. Which may not bother everyone, but for me I tend to take a lot of selfies with my kids and don’t always want to have to open the camera, flip the phone around, unlock the outer screen, then take the selfie picture every time I just want to take a quick picture. It’s just a small annoyance that I noticed, but probably wouldn’t bother the average person.

I’m currently using a 12 pro Max, and have been really considering switching over! You think it’s worth it?
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 6 ай бұрын
It definitely depends! If you’re pretty far into the Apple ecosystem and use other Apple devices like AirPods, Apple Watch, MacBook, iPad, Apple TV, etc, I don’t think it would be worth it, but if you just have an iPhone I think it’s definitely worth a try! For me, I absolutely LOVED using the Fold and in the end couldn’t find anything at all wrong with it that I couldn’t just change in settings. However, I daily use HomePods, Apple TVs for all my shows, my MacBook, AirPods Pro, and then my Apple Watch, so having to give up some/all of those and switch to another platform just wasn’t an option for me. A great example of why I didn’t switch is because I buy most of my shows and movies through Apple and the Apple TV app, and if I switched to the fold I would immediately lose having all those on my phone, and that’s definitely not something I’m willing to do. But anyways, if you just use an iPhone but aren’t super invested in the ecosystem and want an even bigger phone screen, I would definitely consider switching to the fold! My personal recommendation though, I would definitely look into the Pixel Fold first before buying the Samsung Fold. I’ve heard a lot of people really like how the Pixel Fold has a bit of a wider outer/inner screen design vs the Samsung fold with the taller and narrower displays, plus you get access to all the Pixel-only features that Google adds to Android, so that’s a huge plus too.

I used Android exclusively until pixel 2, then all iOS after. How ever never bought home pods, I use Google home/ nest hubs. Google has voice match so it should do the same thing as HomePods. The Apple Watch is nicer, makes no sense since Samsung has had watches much longer, and honestly the early watches with a camera on the band were really nice and fun. I find my iPhone struggles sometimes opening apps while a KZbin video is playing in pop up or streaming music. Apples keyboard has bothered me for ever, no number row, terrible autocorrect, can’t do a split keyboard. Finally safari stinks at loading certain web pages, sometimes I have to use chrome and it will work but it’s held back using safari engine. They both are great and terrible at certain things. Still using iPhone currently but it’s so stale feeling, and my wife’s xs max does the same thing and feels like the same phone as my 14 pro max, except it’s more comfortable and lighter.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Nice, I kind of did the same thing, I used Samsung for a while up until I switched from my Galaxy Note Edge to the iPhone 5s and then I stuck with iOS after that. And ahh that makes sense that Google would have that same feature. Yeah I’ve always thought that was weird too! Samsung has had smart watches for almost as long as I can remember and somehow I feel like they’re still just several steps behind the Apple Watch. That’s interesting about your iPhone struggling to do those things, which iPhone do you have? I honestly haven’t really noticed any issues like that on my iPhones, but I’m pretty much always running on the last or current gen phones so that could be why. I totally agree though, I think apples keyboard autocorrect (and dictation) has been TERRIBLE for a really long time, but I’ve been on the iOS 17 beta for almost a month now and the autocorrect and dictation is MILES better. Like, seriously it feels like a whole new keyboard and I love it, it’s a much needed improvement for sure. And yes it still can’t do split keyboard or any of those other things yet, but I’m not sure if it ever will at this point. I will say I would really like a number row on the iPhone though, especially after using the Fold 5’s keyboard for a couple weeks! You really have had issues with Safari? That’s interesting, maybe we go to different websites, but I feel like Safari has been awesome for me for the last 5-6 years. Especially features like being able to just grab any open webpage (and it’s cookies) from my iPhone with a single click and be signed in and on the exact same site session, that’s just wild and seriously one of my favorite features of Safari/iOS. But yes you’re 100% right, they’re both good and bad at many different things, and even share some common issues between them. But iPhone and the overall iPhone shape (as well as software updates) have kind of gotten less and less exciting over the years, especially when compared to the folding phones that Samsung and Google and Microsoft and all the other companies are making. I’d bet money that Apple releases a folding phone on the 12th at this next keynote. I think now that Google has done it Apple cannot be far behind on joining them, but I could be wrong. Either way, I still really appreciate the incredible improvements that all the companies have been making to their cameras and lenses and screens, have 144hz screens on iPhones now as well as 48MP cameras capable of shooting in HDR has been awesome for me and makes my family photos and videos just that much more lifelike. Fingers crossed I’m right and Apple finally releases a new type of phone, folding phone or otherwise, at this conference on the 12th! I’ll be watching the keynote hopefully live on my channel with anyone who wants to join, so we’ll see!

Yeah it definitely is usable, I just didn’t love the experience of typing on something that slim, felt like when I was back using my old iPhone 4s. Haha Either way though, it seems that myself and a lot of reviewers I’ve watched like MKBHD and others mentioned that they loved how the outer screen on the Pixel fold was usable as basically a “normal phone” because it had a more “normal shaped” outer screen and not as slim or tall as the Fold 5, and I think for me I prefer the Pixel phone’s wider design. That’s just my own personal view on it though, if you like the slimmer design of the outer screen then I’m glad that it works for you! It’s definitely a popular phone, so there’s plenty of people who like it slim like that.

Oh interesting I didn’t realize that, I can see that being annoying. Even if there was just more spacing or a little distinction between the volume and power buttons that would be enough for me, I just felt they were a bit too close together on that one side.

Is it durable do you recommend Verizon protection plan would it be worth it.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 6 ай бұрын
It seemed pretty durable and I wasn’t really concerned about damaging it at all (I’m pretty careful with my electronics) but I definitely have seen some KZbinrs and people with folding phones have them randomly fail after a year or two of use, so I’m not entirely sure of the longevity of folding phones yet. That being said, I think a Verizon (or Samsung if they have their own warranty service you can sign up for) would definitely be worth doing just in case.

Try turning off your wifi for Netflix. Then turn back on after app loads. Something like that.
@MTS4K

Thank you I appreciate the suggestion! I actually ended up connecting the phone to another wifi network and then Netflix connected successfully, so not sure why but my home router didn’t want to connect just this one device to Netflix for some reason. Oh well!

Now that you're learning how to swipe and use Netflix lol. Among other things, maybe you should do a follow-up video?
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Maybe! I'd be interested in that, but I'm not sure what else I would include in the video beyond "you can change the three-bar swipe gesture to not be visible but still function" and "don't use the inner camera at all except for video calls, only use the outer camera for selfies". haha

The inner selfie camera is meant to use for video calls. It really is not there for selfie photos.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
Yeah it seems like that's the general consensus from most people. I get that that's definitely an option, and for sure understand that using the outer camera is going to give you a better photo in the end, but I think if the inner camera allows you to take selfies still but they're not the best quality, it still is something that can be improved upon. Because realistically, if the Fold 6 has a better inner camera next year, everyone will be saying "The inner selfie camera quality is much improved!" even though this year everyone is saying that it's not for selfies. Either way though, everyone in the comments made a great point that using the outer camera for selfies will definitely give a much nicer and more crisp photo, so that's definitely a huge plus for this device.

Yes I get that, and you’re right there are, I just thought that for some reason when viewing content vertically with the folding screen open, it was weird the sound came from the top left and bottom left sides of the phone instead of just from both sides or the middle. It’s just something I noticed sounded a bit weird, but at least it’s easily fixed by turning the phone sideways.

Its hard to form full unbiased opinions, especially if someone is a apple fanboy or android user. You cannot really compare. You can compare iphone to iphone and android to android but its like cats and dogs, they dont mate.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 3 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s very true, I don’t think anyone can be truly unbiased between the two different ecosystems, but for me I definitely tend to lean more the Apple direction because of the ecosystem and some of the features I love. Either way though the phone was a great device and I love so much about it, definitely looking forward to the future of folding devices!

what? you are not going to switch? no global search? this is my most used feature on my iPhone. isn‘t google the biggest search engine on the internet? why has their OS no search engine? this is something I miss on my work windows computer every day. My Mac has this great local search engine. Isn‘t Microsoft also a big search engine on the internet?

found the answer. use the recent app screen (swipe up) - it does not only search for apps, but also other things, like local contacts.

Nice that’s awesome you love it! I definitely wish I could switch to one someday, but right now I’m just too ingrained in the Apple ecosystem. Which is disappointing, because IF they ever make a folding phone, it definitely won’t be anytime soon (all their focus seems to be on Apple Vision Pro right now), and I’m sure it won’t be cheap either.

You are just trying to justify why you prefer the iPhone.
@MTS4K
@MTS4K 9 ай бұрын
That’s a fair assessment, and it does come across that way for sure. For my channel and reviews, my goal is to provide a review that focuses less on specifics like “is this year’s processor better than last year’s”, and instead look at more of an overall review of the device and features and usability and/or any issues I notice while testing. That being said, you’re right I did compare this device more to my iPhone than I originally planned. However, I think when most people are looking at a review of a device on KZbin, a good percentage of the time they’re considering purchasing it, so comparing it to a device they might have (like an iPhone) and mentioning some features it does/doesn’t have if you consider switching is important too.

Hey I can dream! Haha But for real, we’ve already seen where Apple (and Google as well) both sometimes wait until a category has been already established by another company and then jump in and make a significantly improved version of the other company’s tech (like Google coming out with the Pixel fold AFTER Samsung had already released 5 other versions of the same folding phone, or like Apple adding always-on displays to the iPhone almost a decade after Android phones got the tech, etc). So hopefully it will happen someday!
