Today, I'll preach about "Samudāya”, the cause of suffering. The cause of not making progress in meditation practice, in Vipassana meditation. I'll talk about it point by point. From observation, you are not careful of the 6 sense doors: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind. Let the mind get carried away when something comes into the senses. When eyes see objects, the mind gets carried away. When ears hear any noise, the mind gets carried away. When the nose smells something, the mind gets carried away. Sometimes one doesn't know whether it is positive or negative because one doesn’t make a mental note. One is not skillful (in mental noting). A small note (to note down positive or negative occurred during the day). Do you still have it with you? Raise your hand if you still have it. Not many people have it. Who is still noting it down? Who is still noting it down? Raise your hand. Let me see it later. When you're not skillful, you need a handbook. It’s like we are not good at swimming and about to swim across the big river. We need a boat, a raft to take us to. If one doesn't have anything, at least a swim ring, a wooden log to help preventing from drowning. But, if you are confident that you are good (at it), you don't have to use anything. (You) can swim across. But, you have to be very good at it. If you are not, you'll drown and die. Why one doesn’t make progress (in meditation practice)?
1. One is not careful of the 6 sense doors: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind. (One) neglects the mind. Let the defilement come in. Let the bad things come in. The mind is dirty. (It becomes) blind. Look at the thing that should be looked at. Listen to the thing that should be listened to. Think of the thing that should be thought of. Only these 3 sentences. Look at thing that should be looked at. If one looks at something and it makes the mind go downward (and) is dirty, don't look at it. Nowadays, there are nude photos. They will arouse sexual emotion. One looks at them. Nude photos. Look at them on the internet. This thing can increase the sexual desire. Then, the mind becomes dirty. Obsessed with it. Nude photos; showing more skin. Why one doesn't look at rotten corpse in order to decrease (the sexual desire)? This is a clear example. Listen to things that should be listened to. Why pay attention to gossiping, scolding. If one gets in it, one will have a sin as well. The mind will be depressed. Listen to the good things. A story about the merit that this person or that person makes. Or listen to things that will be good for the ears and the mind. Look at the things that will be good for the eyes (and the mind). Things that are not good, don't listen to it. It's not useful. If one listens well, wisdom may occur. Not being careless. Most of the time, one doesn't make a mental note. Or doesn't know how to do so…Then, (one) gets carried away and criticizes other people. The mind is sin. It doesn't help developing Buddha mind. It adds rubbish into the mind. Stop everything in your mind. Don't let chaos to be in your mind. Because one doesn't careful of 6 sense doors. It's like spoiling yourself to do what you want. It affects everything.
2. Sleeping too much. (One) tends to sleep often. When one is unmindful, one goes to sleep. One thinks “I’m sick”. It actually tricks the mind to feel sick then go to sleep. When you sleep, you will be less mindful then the hindrance can disturb. So, the mind can’t improve because it doesn’t fight with hindrance. (One) makes an excuse of having sickness. When feeling lazy to do walking meditation, one goes to sleep instead. At the end, what happens? The mind is full of negativity. When something disturbs, one will act madly. If s/he was a crocodile, s/he would attack other person with its tail. Whatever happens, will get angry. This would make one go to low realm. Oppositely, one should be still and calm for others to feel that. Sleep too much. Wake up late. It’s ok sometimes if it is because of working late. But, one is addicted to it. When not doing the work (late at night), one still wakes up (late) like this. When I was not in the temple, I think that a lot of people woke up late. Had freedom. How many people would have perseverance?
3. Eating too much is the third one. A lot of food on the table. Eat and talk. Eat and talk. Talk about this and that. You won't be in a stage of meditation because the defilement is fully inside the mind. It takes a lot of time to do walking and sitting meditation to free the mind from the defilement. How can one free from the defilement? Defilement is heavy. It weighs down the mind. Hindrance weighs down the mind...
