to me cantor Malavsky is the greatest cantor ever born,he sings with such passion,such articulation,what a voice.every time I hear him ,he makes me cry,and usualy i don't cry so lightly.he will be remembered for a millenia.it's like the angels of God touched him.I am sure he sings to God in heaven,and God enjoys him.because he gave him that gift.

I was about 12 in 1960, when Chazzan Malavsky and children conducted Days of Awe services at the New Irvington Hotel in Lakewood, New Jersey. Alas, I was too young to really appreciate them and their folksy arrangements. I do remember "HaYom!" (today [is the day of self-examination]). A dozen years ago, I found a cassette album with a Yiddish version of the Fier Kashes (4 Questions). But that and the equipment on which to play it lost in a move. Awesome chahzanuet.

Little do we know it, but Chazzun Malavsky was at one time a Hoiz Buchur of Yosselle Rosenblatt. Yosselle took him under his wing and we have a duo of them singing Umipeni Chatoeinu.

החזן שמואל מלבסקי נולד בעיירה סמילא (Смела) שבקרבת קייב, בדרום-מערב האימפריה הרוסית (כיום אוקראינה) בשנת 1894. כבר באוקראינה נודע כילד פלא וזכה לכינוי "שמוליק'ל מסמילא". בשנת 1914, בהיותו בן 20, היגר לארצות הברית, שם פרש עליו את חסותו החזן המפורסם יוסל'ה רוזנבלט, בביתו גר כשמונה שנים. מלבסקי החל את דרכו בקהילה אורתודוקסית ברובע בנסונהרסט בברוקלין, ניו יורק, לאחר מכן בקהילת "מגן אברהם" בדטרויט, וכן התפלל בבורו פארק. הוא הקליט פרקי חזנות בליווי אורגן וללא מקהלה, ואף הקליט ארבעה דואטים עם מורו ורבו רוזנבלט. רוזנבלט אף הכיר לו את אשתו לעתיד - הפסנתרנית הארייט (אַלטֶה). שמואל מלבסקי התאפיין בקול שתואר כרחב, חם ורווי רגש. הוא ניחן בכישרון הלחנה ואלתור, ורבות מיצירותיו נמנות עם הקלאסיקות של עולם החזנות.
