I saw Ramey dozens of times since his early NYC Opera days, in many of his great roles. At the Met too. It’s a little shocking to see him in the character parts now. In my own mind, I guess I assumed he’d go on forever as the devil!

His speaking voice is bass for sure. Bass-baritone speaking voice sounds a bit lighter, check out Sven Olafsen he is one.
