In 2014, Jay Bauman and Mike Stoklasa from Red Letter Media did a great interview with Matt Hannon; he had a lot of great information about the production of the film. Hannon seems to be a genuinely nice guy, with a self-deprecating sense of humor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWmbZGOLjdCHsLs

Matt voiced his concerns many times during filming that he was a very unconvincing samurai, but was ignored. With his background as a bodyguard for huge Hollywood stars, he can handle himself in a fight, but his style, as is typical with bodyguards, is to take down opponents as quickly as possible. He had no idea how to fight on camera, let alone aesthetically, or to fight for any prolonged time.

This falls into the "So Bad It's Good" category And a sequel was released 25 years later, Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance. No official rating for the movie can be found on RT, but it's estimated to have 0%.

I help organise a "so bad it's good" movie festival in Madrid every year, and we invite the people behind the movies as guests. My first year, one of our guests was Samurai Cop himself, and I spent the week looking after him. We became buds, and I have a LOT of behind the scenes goss. I'll address anything I can (and am allowed to) as the video goes. First up: the wig. Yep. He's wearing a wig for half the movie. He filmed the thing in 1989 and then went back to his life (as Stallone's bodyguard) and cut his hair. Fast forward to 1991, and he gets a call from Shervan. He goes to see him, and Shervan's first question is "why did you cut your hair?" Turns out they had run out of money and it took two years to get funding. So Matt thought they had finished, but they hadn't. Shervan bought the cheapest wig he could find, and there you go.

I love that you guys didn’t simply take a dump on the movie because it’s completely absurd, but rather gave incisive commentary on WHY it’s so awful… then dumped on it *because* of those things. Nicely done!

The thumbnail for this one. hahahaha The thing about the sequel is that you can tell they're self-aware and know it's bad, like it's all a wink to the audience. The first one was bad, but you get the sense that they were trying to play it straight. Trying. I also love how the main character's hair is so obviously a wig in some scenes because he was called back for reshoots and had already cut his hair. They tried to cover it up with a hat in a scene or two and it did not help. If you haven't watched this with the commentary from Rifftrax, I suggest so because they rip into it hilariously.

Re: Samurai Cop 2, you pretty much nailed it. The director wanted to make a deliberately bad movie. Matt wanted to try and make a good movie. Matt lost. The "final boss", as it were, is Tommy Wiseau (a horrible human being), which instantly erases any doubts you might have about it being intentionally bad. Anyway, Tommy kept insisting that he should kill Samurai Cop and take over the franchise. For free. Just cause. Eventually, they filmed the scene in which he kills Joe just to shut him up, and instantly got rid of it.

Hey, I don't know if you guys are looking for suggestions of lousy movies, but here are a few, just in case: The Devil's Rain (1975) The Bermuda Depths (1978) Bloody Pit Of Horror (1965) The Astro-Zombies (1968)

Re: the use of women in the film, you both make valid points, and I wouldn't be able to confirm either way. The second one stars a few porn stars, so it's clearly in keeping with tradition. Melissa Moore returns in part 2, despite dying in part 1. Jannis Farley is now married with kids, embarrassed by the whole thing, and refused to come back. They looked for the nurse but couldn't find her.

Is it just me, or did Jannis Farley actually have potential for some actual screen presence? Or is it because in comparison to everyone else, she sucked the least?

Take note of how much the two main cops resemble Riggs and Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon. That's not an accident - a shit-ton of b-movies in the late '80s and early '90s tried to cash in on the lethal Weapon franchise's popularity by being essentially cheap ripoffs.

An Iranian filmmaker trying to make ‘American action movies’ is never going to be self-aware, which is what makes bad films like this so much fun to watch.

Yeah, this one defies description. I think my favorite aspect is that, after they wrapped the production, the lead must have cut or dyed his hair and then (I'm guessing) was pulled back in to do additional scenes, in a really cheap, Halloween store level wig.

I still think the sequel is worth watching...I don't think it's accurate that they were trying to make it bad, just ridiculous. and Tommy Wiseau is in it, playing the villain so... that's a thing.

This is the worst cover-based shooter I've laid my eyes on. I wonder, though, if Sam Esmail got inspiration for some of his (really good) negative space compositions in _Mr. Robot_ from this movie. Like, dude watched it as a young kid and as a joke, tried them out at some point and realized that hey, in the right context made by competent people with artistic vision, they actually work.
