So a story about being an audience member at a low turn out show. Back in 1984/85 I went to see Simon Townshend at a club in Boston. He was touring after the moderate MTV and chart success of "I'm The Answer". The club held about 400 people, there were 9 or 10 of us (including my date, who didn't know the music at all). As the band walked out on stage, you could see the disappointment on all of their faces. Simon stepped up to the mic and said (paraphrase here) " Well, if we're gonna do this, we need all of you down here by the front of the stage" (everyone was spread all around the hall). Everyone moved to the edge of the stage. The band proceeded to rip through an excellent performance, pausing throughout the show to tell stories, ask and answer questions, etc.. In all, a great lesson in professionalism and making the most of what you've got. Simon earned my lifelong respect and admiration that night...almost 40 years ago...and I'm still telling this story.

The gigs with little-to-no audience are actually the ones where an artist discovers how much they love the craft of music, irrespective of applause. So they're absolutely necessary to go through, in my opinion.
@aylbdrmadison1051 Жыл бұрын
And it's an art of it's own to learn to "play to an audience," and I think that's another thing easier to learn with a small audience. But then some do get thrown right in the fire while they're still cold, and do great anyway.

Whenever I get in a situation where there is just a few people at my show, I go the extra mile to put on a steller performance for them. Those people paid to see us and they stick around for the whole set, they deserve the show to be as hype as if there were hundreds in the audience. Then afterwards they hang out with while we tear down and it is always such a great experience.
@chrismuratore4451 Жыл бұрын
Most of the shows ive played have been open mics with limited audience. Its almost always a good experience. Often times I'll go to bow out after my 2 or 3 tracks but if its a really thin crowd, people will often encourage me to play a few more. Small crowds can definitely be rewarding

Saw a support act having trouble with a small audience that was mostly talking and not listening. Singer, songwriter, acoustic. He gave up after like 5 numbers. It must have been bad for him that it seemed like he was being ignored, but I hope he learned something from it. Can't remember the guys' name though. BTW still no international shipping on your store Sammy?

Sabotage? Or not? - Had a fill in guy show up with a double necker - guitar & bass. He was supposed to play strictly rhythm, but at one point he went to the bass and started stepping all over me. There's only room for one bass player in this band, rockstar, so I grabbed the power cord from his amp and pulled it out of the wall. I don't think he even noticed, it was the last song of the last set.

A lifetime of metronomic practice is the real secret we kept along the way. Make a video render about something that matters instead of drivel. I don’t think youtube has infinite space. I haven’t really ever seen a render where you actually teach or play much. Just review trinkets and attempt to play styles you don’t practice. Is this channel like a hobby, or do you want to try to get a gig or something?
