1616. High Priest Tenkai (Yoshida Yoshio) informs Yagyū Tajima-no-Kami (Konoe Jūshirō) of his concerns about Hidenari, the surviving son of Toyotomi Hideyori who managed to escape from the Osaka fortress, and his mother, Katsura-no-miya Renko (Ōtani Naoko), who are in hiding following the impending death of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Reluctantly, Yagyū orders his subordinate Asahina Gen'emon (Satō Kei) to capture the mother and son, who are hiding in a temple in Kyoto. Although the mother and son manage to escape Kyoto's jurisdiction with the help of their maid Sasaka (Watanabe Yayoi), they are pursued by the Kōga ninja, Yami no Shichibei (Toura Rokko), and the Iga ninja, Senri Unten (Watanabe Atsushi). On the beach, when Sasaka is about to be killed, she is rescued by the rōnin casually present, Akizuki Rokurōta (Tamura Masakazu). Rokurōta's true identity is that of the Shogun's twin brother and successor, Tokugawa Iemitsu. Not being allowed a place in the Tokugawa family as a successor, he was sent as an adopted son from a young age and has been wandering alone ever since. Coincidentally, after saving the mother and son, Rokurōta, drawn to Sasaka and together with Unten, who has betrayed the Tokugawa, decides to protect them both from assassins and travel with them....
This drama series is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Shibata Renzaburo Following his role as Kyoshiro, Tamura's unique qualities were fully utilized in this captivating portrayal, making it his signature role. His skill in swordsmanship was also showcased in his movements. It is also a pleasure to see Jushiro Konoe, a major star in the world of historical dramas, known for his role as Yagyu Jubei in the "Yagyu Bugeicho" film series, play his character in this drama series.

I really like this series, and just discovered it was based on a novel by Renzaburō Shibata, the creator of Nemuri Kyoshiro and Zankuro, which explains its quality. This is a great episode with a lot of backstory about the life of Akizuki Rokurota (Tamura Masakazu) and his twin Tokugawa Lemitsu, also played by Tamura Masakazu. The woman who raised Lemitsu, and left Rokurota in the fields of Musashi, is very ruthless, and well played by the actress. I especially like how a group of political exiles and ninja's come together to help each other. They operate almost like a family who prize loyalty and self sacrifice. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Not the nicest person , very strict,but he pretty much ensured the Tokugawa would survive another 200 years . He really clamped down on the Damiyo and made sure they would not cause trouble by keeping them strapped for money .

Having studied the rise of the Tokugawa, I would guess "Lemitsu's Secret Journey" presents Lemitsu in the most favorable light possible. It's been said, the victor gets to write history.
