i think the circles that go around the Tau crosses are imitation hermits girdles, with the ends hanging down to form the pattern of the window. i think it comes from the Egyptian ankh with a girdle above the Tau cross. I think the tau cross within a circle and a bell above or below was the insignia of the (knights) order of St Anthony
