From December to March, Puerto San Carlos transforms from a little fishing town to the home of thousands of whale watchers. Then in the spring, when the whale watchers leave, San Carlos returns to the tranquility local people love-fishing, diving for clams, and relaxing to enjoy the great seafood of Magdalena Bay. In May, we headed overland in our Mitsubishi Delica JB500 Camper to do just that. The sheltered waters of the Bay of Magdalena are one of the primary places on the Pacific Ocean side of Baja California where gray whales come to mate, give birth, and nurse the “baby whales.” It also offers fabulous seafood-our favorites chocolate clams and yellowfin tuna! The Chocolate Clam is AKA Baja’s Seafood Candy for the sweetness in every bite. We became friends with a woman diver, Rosio, who harvests chocolate clams in the early mornings for her restaurant and sells to the town’s people. Rosio began diving for clams as a girl-she was ten years old. We hope you enjoy her story!
