I remember in the old days they would have trains that were 1.5 and even one that was 2 miles long with mostly piggieback cars. These freights would slowly creep thru downtown San Diego by the Union Station from or going to the 22nd Street yard. When they got on the main line outside of the city it wasn't uncommon to see them go over 90mph and sometimes even faster. Those were amazing days to watch trains in San Diego.

Thank you for this great video. I have never seen so much freight activity in San Diego !

Very glad you enjoyed! It has taken many years of trips to San Diego to learn how the freight operations work there

BNSF runs one train a day to San Diego from Barstow, and one train back to Barstow. Once those cars get here, they have to be switched, so that is all the action you see is at the yard in San Diego. By the way, in and out of the yard, the trains pass Petco Park. On several occasions I have been at the Padres game and caught a train going by. Two of my favorite passions at one time!

P.S. I once knew the engineer who ran the train on the Escondido branch. Concerning the trains constantly blocking the street during switching, he told me that by law as long as the train is moving, there is no time limit on how long it can block the street. If the train is not moving, the limit is 10 minutes.

correct me if im wrong but i believe that BNSF 121 and 133 were formerly pacific sun engines 141 and 148 after BNSF aquired pacific sun

do they still have the quiet zone in San Diego?
@rail_spike_productions4 ай бұрын
As far as I am aware the quiet zones are still in effect, even though they were taken away for a while. Too many complaints I believe
@pinkgumball20074 ай бұрын
@@rail_spike_productions so to clarify technically they are there but trains going by use the horns
@rail_spike_productions4 ай бұрын
The last I had heard they were not blowing horns at all in downtown, just on the outskirts where the horn zones always have been
