Hey Kev! 👋🏿 So I'm in a digital cinematography degree program right now and one thing I learned is to write/create a storyboard before you create a visual story. If you google creating a storyboard, you'll find a ton of articles about it. Another thing you can do as well is create an A/V script before filming. It helps you plan out what you want to get across in your visual story. You can google A/V Scripts as well to get a better understanding of what it is. Some people prefer storyboards, some A/V Scripts and some do a combination of both. Hope this helps! 😀
