San Diego Police Department

The San Diego Police Department is actively hiring police recruits, lateral police officers and dispatchers. High priority has been given to the unit to achieve the Chief’s goal of 50 recruits per academy, four times per year. The unit was bolstered with a captain’s position, an additional Recruiting Unit sergeant, and an additional recruiting officer position. The unit has been hard at work to streamline the background process to make it as efficient as possible. From start to finish, the hiring process now averages 3-4 months.
The Recruiting Unit focuses their efforts towards military veterans, college students and athletes. The recruiters attend anywhere between 30-45 events per month, in addition to running weekly P.A.T. (Physical Agility Test) practices and pre-academy workouts C.A.M.P. (Candidate Assistance Mentoring Program). The main target for applicants is on local San Diegans with a vested interest in serving their community. However, the Recruiting Unit does travel frequently to colleges in the Southwestern U.S. region to attract applicants to the San Diego lifestyle. The San Diego Police Department recently contracted with a professional marketing company to rebrand the Department and produce new content for a marketing campaign.

@Coder Husk Doesn't work like that, very naive. Join the military and you try to tell your unit or base that your going to change things, until you realize your very small in the chain of command and the reality is your waking up on you peace officer job to work, try for overtime, and go home just to do it over again in hopes to get recommended for a specialty unit 2-4 yrs down the line. Your Chief, and city board is the one who makes changes, not you.

I'm studying criminal justice at Penn State. I love the city of San Diego. I was in the city two summers ago for vacation and I fell in love with the city. Just being from Pennsylvania, that would be a huge adjustment living the whole way across the country away from my country ways of life to the city/suburban life. It would definitely be a different experience for sure!

No, just apply. SDPD is very open to constantly having new recruits, so I doubt they would hold that against you.

I am retired now but I was from Northern Nevada. Never had been to SD until I tested with SDPD and I was hired pretty quickly. The only disadvantage was I did not know how to get to many places. Back then, the FTOs made us use the Thomas Guide maps. You will learn how to get around eventually.

Dude of course it will help. The former military guys are one step ahead of the game because the academy is based off the Marine Corps boot camp model. Think about it. Uniforms, assertiveness, chain of command, honor, respect. Just be fit and able to function as a normal adult and you'll do great.
