Week 1 collection of San Diego’s Residential Organic Waste Program officially kicked off January 18th in the Logan Heights area just east of downtown. Multiple new Rapid Rails saturated the area with drivers getting an understanding of their brand new routes along with recycle coordinators riding shotgun checking as many organic bins as possible to ensure a smooth start. As I was driving around the area, I’d say around 75% of houses chose not to put their green cart out, but the 25% who did had a bunch of clean green or food waste in their carts which was great to see. I was out for an hour and I only saw one cart get rejected due to contamination. ESD is continuing on with the aggressive education campaign. If residents filled their carts with clean material but their kitchen caddy was still attached, the recycle coordinators would cut it off and place it next to the cart. Any carts that looked like they hadn’t been moved since delivery were taken note of as well.
Thanks to Mario and Andrea for allowing me to record! Hope you guys find this!
