This is great to see. I started as a student and a worker at UCSD in 1985 and I just retired from staff in 2020, so I've seen a bit of the history and geography of this line. The university wanted nothing to do with this line in the 80s and 90s, but administrations come and go and the current one has made the extension a vital part of their planning. I saw most of the construction near UCSD, and it was quite an enterprise, but this is just part of a larger project. Two automobile bridges over I-5 were also constructed, along with a bike/pedestrian path directly from campus to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station. I enjoyed strolling that path on the way to the Coaster after work -- all downhill! I think another quality feature of this line can be seen in your presentation. That is, from Old Town north, the line is fully grade separated! Thank you for sharing this, Mike!

The Trolley has incredible potential. It rivaled the Portland MAX in 2019 total and per mile ridership. It recovered faster than any other US/Canadian LRT, even before the youth pass, even before the Mid Coast opening. The Trolley also has two $4B under construction TODs (Riverwalk and SDSU Mission Valley) on the Green Line alone, and that's before counting anything in Downtown. What the Trolley needs most is double if not triple existing frequencies.
@AssBlasster10 ай бұрын
They are officially trying to run 7.5 min frequencies on this exact line (like the border section) during rush hour in 2025, so progress is happening....slowly

Bummed to find this line still doesn't get 'close' to the beach... It looks like it's a 1.5 mile walk though to Black's Beach... Who do we got to petition for a Mission Beach Line?
@CoasterFan21052 жыл бұрын
They've floated the idea of a line to Mission Beach for years, but nothing has ever come of it. Same with the airport. Sounds like the next project might be a secondary line from Mission Valley to the border along the I-805 corridor.

I like the different shots you were able to get. Any idea why the trains are red and not blue?
@TheRandCrews Жыл бұрын
They’re just calling the routes in colours not the trains with it. Like Green Line and Orange Line are in red too or in advertisement wraps, there’s no red line. There’s the silver line but those are a bunch of different historical streetcar trains and the proposed Purple line is probably a subway, still no red

The problem with the Trolley is that it really only works for students, tourists and those who live/work downtown. I live less than a mile from a station in east county. It is a 20-30 minute drive to get to Kearny Mesa during rush hour, or it is 90 minutes by trolley and busses. I'm just not going to spend three hours a day commuting.
@alexhaowenwong6122 Жыл бұрын
2019 total and per mile Trolley ridership rivaled that of the Portland MAX, and it's recovered from COVID stronger than any other US/Canadian LRT system except for maybe Seattle. The Trolley does need far better frequencies, and a Purple Line to Kearny Mesa could be a great project. But even before the Mid Coast, it was rivaling the Portland MAX, which is surprising.
@norwegianblue2017 Жыл бұрын
@@alexhaowenwong6122 There was a 39.7 million trips on the Trolley in Fiscal Year 2014. Despite considerable expansion, ridership was down to 29.7 million in 2022.

Interurban lines were being abandoned in the 1950s and 1960s. Now history is repeating itself by bringing back electric rail transportation. The freeways out in California have run out of capacity and can't handle much more motor vehicle traffic.
