My grandfather took a trip through San Francisco in 1958, with (what I'm putting together) a group from the American Legion.
Film was scanned at a discrete 18fps. Footage was extrapolated to 24fps to create smoother motion.

As soon as I saw the quality of that Disneyland video, I clicked on your channel name hoping that wasn't the only video you uploaded! Amazing collection of videos! Hope you stumble upon some more in you attic!

Really brings back memories. I was 9 years old in 1958, grew up on the Peninsula but spent a lot of time in the City with relatives. Jumping on and off moving cable cars was an acquired skill.

I saw this film years ago and you had some remarkable music accompanying it. The ethereal music added the perfect touch! I wish you could add it back in. Could you tell me the name of the music you had added? I knew it once but have forgotten.

Alone In Kyoto by Air. I had it up on the Vimeo version of the video but it was taken down due to the unauthorized use of that song.

Oh, did this bring back memories. I grew up there during that period. My Dad was stationed at Letterman on the Presidio 1950 until 1963 when I graduated from high school. We had a lot of family film like that. One of my sisters had it put on VHS at one point many years later. I'll have to look to see if I still have my copy after several moves. There wasn't a whole lot that could be saved. I have it all in my head, though. I loved this. Thank you so much.

This is great. Thanks for posting. When people took this footage so many years ago, what they always filmed was the monuments and buildings which are still there - like the Golden Gate Bridge. But what's most interesting today, to me, at least, are the street shots with regular people. Your grandfather provided plenty of those. I didn't see Jimmy Stewart or Kim Novak, however.

arrived in July of 59' but recalls what a classy place San Francisco was back then. Notice the young men in suits and one woman wearing white gloves on the cable car when it was turned around. This is how people dressed when they went "Downtown".

Such a wonderful walk back through time! 1958 is the year o'my birth ~ and I've lived in SF for 30 years. I miss seeing the sailors walking like this through North Beach.

Jeff, what was your scanning method? What hardware did you use? Fantastic quality and so great to see the city from '58.

Thanks, Gene! This was scanned on a Spirit Datacine (aka a Spirit 1) and was color corrected on a daVinci 2k Plus. The conversion from 18fps to 24fps was done on daVinci Resolve utilizing the Optical Flow interpolation. Fortunately, the film was in pretty good shape, so that made the entire process fairly simple.

Jeff Altman The quality is astounding -- and the color is sensational. It was clearly shot with a 16mm camera; there's too much resolution for 8mm. Any idea what kind of gear your grandfather used? Thanks so much for posting.

Dick Hartzell Thanks! Everything was shot with a Bell&Howell Filmo 16mm camera. I still have it. Works great, still produces wonderful images.

Jeff Altman Wow. Conventional *American* film technology and it looks great. Most impressive, if you've ever used this camera (and it sounds as if you may have) is that you've got to set the aperture settings yourself -- I doubt this camera offers even semi-automatic aperture control. My dad used to own a Bolex 16mm camera and well I remember shooting a roll with it and fouling up most of the aperture settings, which resulted in overexposed film and washed out images. Your grandfather made no such errors. Beautiful. I especially appreciate your refusal to dress up these movies with soundtracks -- or to juice their pace with some 21st-century editing. Great primary-source documents.

And probably Kodak Kodachrome judging by the heavy reds/yellow saturation and 3d-ish look.

I have a bunch of my grandparents' films that I'd love to digitize (for them and the rest of the family). Clearly you weren't aiming a DSLR at a projector screen here... what sort of rig did you use to scan all of this? I've been working on some ideas for a DIY project but haven't found the right hardware combination.
