They are amazing Cable Cars. These were in service since the 19th Century. I hope to come back and ride this again, I have rode on them since when I was young.

Just lovely! We visited SF in 1988 & 1989,.........took the cable cars when ever we could. I liked watching the "grip", working the levers. Nice.

I’m going to San Francisco next month. I don’t think I’ll get to ride a trolley because I’m going with a teen tour and we’ll only be there for a few days. We are going to Alcatraz. Update. We didn’t go to Alcatraz but we did walk onto the Golden Gate Bridge.

I went on one of these trollies when I was a little kid. The Then I found out by the time I was in my twenties my home town use to have some trollies like these. But they where taken away by 1933. I still wish my home town still had them.

They're not trolleys, which have electric motors driving the wheels. This kind of streetcar is called a cable car because it moves by gripping a cable that is running in the slot between the rails. There were a few dozen cities that had them, but most were replaced by electrically run trolley cars around 1900 or shortly afterwards. Seattle and Tacoma had cable cars until just before the Second World War, and San Francisco's were nearly replaced after the war. Hundreds of cities and towns had trolley cars, however, like yours. They survived in only a few cities, but have been reincarnated in many places as light rail lines. If you want to see a trolley car as they used to be, ride the St. Charles line in New Orleans. It uses cars built in the 1920s and is the oldest streetcar line in the world, originating in 1835.

@@larryphilby4918 my city had trollies since Christmas of 1886 to 1933. Past the city limits which is now part of the city they had a park with rides, dance hall, penny arcade, etc. I read in 1917 there was a big robbery people stole stuff having to deal with the electric cables for the trollies. There is a museum in another town they have ole trollies, old trains, cars, etc. so I have seen them. They do look like the ones that I saw at San Fransisco when I was a little kid.

@@26snoopy82 Many streetcar companies built amusement parks and picnic grounds to generate revenue. The San Francisco cable cars look like old trolleys because that's the way streetcars in general looked in the 1890s, with that raised clerestory roof, which provides light and ventilation.

I am afraid some people men or girls riding the cable car standing outside. Don't you think it is dangerous ? I am planning to visit SFO in the last week of November to the first week of December this year as first time.

Admittedly, it'd make me nervous to do, but I'm pretty sure there aren't many incidents involving people falling off the 'running boards'. The cable car crews are pretty conscientious of it, too, I think.

Your trip getting to San Francisco can be dangerous. And waiting in line for the cable car can be dangerous. The world is dangerous. As for the standees: It's the best way to experience the cable car ride. Now they have limited the standees to a straight line. Back in the 1970's when I was living there, the standees were double what they now allow. And I never heard of anyone falling off. I don't know that many locals ride now as the prices have risen to "tourist" prices.

alston dutton Does the MUNI pass work on the cables, too? It did when I was there years ago.
@danielcarroll3358
@danielcarroll3358 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. A monthly pass works and there are short "visitor passports" good for 1,3 or 7 days, which cost $22, $33, and $43 respectively. They are good on MUNI only, not BART, but that includes the cable cars and tourist streetcar lines - as well as all buses and streetcars including the Metro. If you are 5 to 18 or 65+ a discount clipper card for the month is only $38, and that same card gives you a 62.5% discount on BART. Plan ahead!
