On July 9th, 1988 the San Francisco Giants played one of their best offensive games in SF franchise history when they beat the defending NL champion St. Louis Cardinals 21-2 at Candlestick Park. This video includes highlights from that game. Chris Speier, who was playing for an injured Robby Thompson, stepped in and hit for the cycle for the second time in his career (his first with the Giants). Ernest Riles, who came in midway during the game for Jose Uribe, shocked everyone by hitting the SF Giants' 10,000th home run in franchise history. A great look back at the late 80's Giants and the unforgettable place we know as Candlestick Park. Clips include flying hot dog wrappers, 20th Century Fox Fanfare, screaming ball on the scoreboard, Rifleman fanfare, people chasing after home runs beyond the fence and some smooth fielding by the late, great Jose Uribe. It's a fabulous 20 minute look back in time. Audio is from KNBR. Ron Fairly and Wayne Hagin make the call. Video is off the Cardinal broadcast via a satellite dish. Not sure if this game was broadcast locally on Giantvision so this may be the first time seen by Giant fans. Let me know if you were there and what it was like. Enjoy!

I was at this game with my dad!!! All previous Giants games I had been to were losses (even during good seasons), until this one. I was an excited kid to finally see a winning game and I remember my dad telling me "Katy, you're never going to see a game like this again!" Ernest Riles had just come over from the AL or something like that and his batting average was something crazy like .800 during this game!

Remember watching this game as a 10 year old on KPLR TV Channel 11 St.Louis. I was watching it at my grandparents house and sat there in disbelief. As a 10 year old the whole world was ending but it was only 1 loss. The 1988 Cardinals finished 76-86 in a hapless season.

Had the pleasure of listening to this game on KNBR, when I was 16 years old. Those summer days of your teenage years, when the home team is crushing the opposition- does life get better than that? I remember wishing so badly that Will Clark would be the one to crush Giants franchise HR #10,000. Congrats to Ernie Riles!

I was nine when I saw my first Giants game in 1964 and then to finally watch the Giant's develop into a team that would contend in the World Series the very next year, was pretty cool. What also makes it kinda cool is that my best friend and I were at this game that day, in the left centerfield bleachers. I also had game four tickets to the World Series, that was the S.F. earthquake year and I got to watch the Giants lose the series in four straight. ..but at least I didn't have game three tickets!

I remember this game. It didn’t really make me feel that good because the Cardinals had beaten the Giants the previous season in the NLCS. And for those of you as old as I am, you’ll remember that the Giants had a 3 to 2 lead in that series but lost. A regular season beat down doesn’t make it for losing a playoff series you should’ve won.

Yup. I was 9 nine years old when they lost that playoffs series. They should've made it to the World Series. I would've given up all the happy memories of the 1989 NLCS because they had a better chance at beating the Twins than the A's.
