First went there in 2007. When I retired in 2011, I moved to San Jose. Stayed for 5 years. Had to return to the US to help family. If not I would still be there. Loved every minute of it. Beautiful country and beautiful people.

I am Costa Rican. Costa Rica has some beautiful areas, but this video is showing downtown San Jose, which I would NOT recommend to any tourist. Unfortunately there is nothing nice to see there. To see the beautiful places go visit the volcanos, the national parks, Monte Verde and the beaches on the Pacific Ocean; however, do not waste your time going to Puntarenas unless is to catch the ferry. Some of the most beautiful beaches are Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, Samara, Malpais. I would NOT recommend the Caribean side. There are some nice beaches there, but the area is a little dangerous. So to keep it safe, avoid that area.

Not particularly racist. There is some xenophobia against Nicaraguans, and some other immigrants, but in general it's not a huge problem. People do expect tourists to be white since most visitors come from North America and Europe, but not being white will not be a problem whatsoever.

Best food in town and you sit next to a local cab driver and rub elbows talking about your day with him... I love the smells in the market... fresh comino being ground, tortillas de queso on the stovetop, a lady slicing open a pineapple handing u a piece trying to sell it to you... You can't get that in the States... I love this country and I wouldn't leave it... I love the people... This is home for me... I have been to Costa Rica 11 times for stays of 1-4 weeks since 1996. I have been to several areas of the country and disagree with some who say stay away from San Jose. It's a big city, so sure, be aware of your space and surroundings, but don't be afraid to go there.There are plenty of things to see and do, including catching a performance at the National Theater or visiting the museums. Food? Don't worry, places like Café Mundo and others will give you a fine meal with excellent service at a reasonable price.Finally, don't fail to interact with the Costa Rican people. I have found them to be good natured, welcoming, and willing to be helpful. Besides, they like to have fun like everybody else.

From my experience, i traveled last month to costarica, my impression was as many people here said, especially san jose it is definitely not safe like in Europe since iam german, also when you go out from san jose you dont feel secure because of the way drive and the ugly streets around san jose , in the night i never dared to go san jose because it is simply not attracting for visitor to walk in its streets, i took buses there , it was ok punctual but not comfortable at all and because of the traffic the buses can be a hell journey to travel with, taking taxis is also kind of expensive and talking about money, costarica is most expensive country i guess , even most rich countries in Europe are not expensive as costarica when it comes to food it’s unfortunately poor quality and very expensive except some local products like tropical fruits! A small bottle of water cost 4 euros which is 5$ unbelievable , to have nice meal you need minimum to pay 20€ which quite expensive, but service in restaurant was good and people generally were friendly and ready to help, i cant imagine i was able to stay more than a week there if i was not hosted by very nice local Costarican person who was my guide to see most beautiful places of costarica !

How about your beloved Europe, while you are there, try London as the Brexit out because they are so racist they hate immigrants and are confused and people are rebelling in the streets, etc, etc. Pretty much like the US. We need to re-think the concept of First World and Third World Countries. CR is a first world country. I don't know where you ate there but you can spend as little or as much as you like. Have some adventure or go back to Germany, where it's safe.

Me and girlfriend are thinking of moving to Central America can anyone tell if Costa Rica is a good place to start a family, I seen pictures and if looks beautiful and lots of place I'd love to explore but I've heard that crime as become huge in Costa Rica, my friend lived in CR for about 3 years with her family and she really enjoyed it and lots of cool wildlife and beautiful places to visit but her house was broken into twice but it doesn't sound that bad but its something to think about.. So if anyone can reply it would be much appreciated and be a bit reasonable though 😋

I would recommend you cross central america by bus first like I did. It does not cost much to go from Mexico City to Panama City. It is a 3 day bus ride from Tapachula-Mexico to Panama. I definitely would be starting the bus ride from Mexico City to include Mexico. Please view my tica bus videos for Landscapes or other videos about Mexico. Thanks for watching :)

sounds like your friends house wasn't properly secured. When I lived in Woodstock, NY where crime is probably 10 times worse than CR I warded off a criminal break in by making sure all my windows and doors were break-in proof. They came that same night and couldn't get in. Junkies. In CR most police don't carry guns, the people are very friendly to people from el norte. I loved CR, may retire there. It's safer by far than most places and in their constitution war is forbidden. Beware however of all the tourists from up north and Europe, Canada and Australia. They are all over the place down there and Americans own a lot of land and some think they own Costa Rica. BTW it is very family oriented and very soon after your arrival you will be invited to dinner at some familie's home. There is very little hate there and there's lots of love. Definitely check it out!

BTW If you're in San Jose you can stay at this really cool youth hostel until you get your bearings. From there are shops and restaurants, and live music in Central Park. Go to Central Park. If you want to go to a very nice beach tourist area on the azure blue Pacific, take bus to Manuel de Antonio where they have cabinas and beach hotels. The tropical forest there is awesome and the fruit and veggie sellers, palm trees, wow; if you go to the Caribbean coast though, keep your pack nailed to your body. Poor Ticos don't want to hurt you; they may just want your pack, but I never ran into any trouble. Did you know you have to have both a passport and visa stamp? You get it at the closest Costa Rican consulate. It may be good to pair up with other tourists whom you trust. Also, are you aware of how the seasons are turned around 180 degrees. I went in October from Mpls., MN where temp was -30, and when I landed in CR it was summer, in the 90s. They have two seasons, rainy and not-rainy, 6 months each. It's rainy now, July, but its summer in October. The general vibe throughout the country is one of respect.

People with money don´t tend to live in central San Jose. It´s not much of a city - very suburban. Central downtown San Jose is dangerous at night. Never take out a large amount of cash from a bank teller there. They have contacts on the outside who mug the clients after they leave the banks. I´m so glad I have severed ties with Costa Rica because of the dishonesty and disorganization.
@hayesman7610 жыл бұрын
Paul, I'm pretty sure, from reports I've seen in Filipino tv news, that that's a common occurrence in the Philippines, as well. So many cases of people picking-up large cash deposits at banks then being robbed moments after they exit the bank.
@mattrobinson692210 жыл бұрын
doesnt matter which city in the world you in, if you take a large amount of cash from cashpoint your going to ask for trouble. San Hose is a great city and safe if your street wise and not stupid enough to wear bright clothes and fancy items (jewelery etc). ive been there a couple times and is one of my favourite cities, very vibrant and characteristic.
@PaulBeet10 жыл бұрын
After 18 years of experience with San Jose, Costa Rica, I´m glad to be finished with it. To me it has no safe, decent downtown. I feel safe in any first world city, except many US inner cities. I now live in Merida, Mexico which is a major city with a lively downtown- day and night - and much safer than San Jose or US major cities.
@jschuler535 жыл бұрын
@@PaulBeet Many surveys about the most dangerous cities in the world always have Latin American and So Am countries and cities at the very top of the list. But never Costa Rica, never San Jose. We are talking about Managua, very violent Guatemala. But also places Columbia. I agree about US cities, among the world's most dangerous cities is always East St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, border towns in TX, South Central LA--the largest gang territories in the US. Even in beautiful Seattle, there is the US's largest homeless population and it keeps growing. Seattle does not arrest or harass the homeless. They help them, and they are trying to figure out a permanent solution, but Amazon keeps stopping the city. Who do they think they are? They and places like them will contribute heavily to US downfall economy. Amazon is an awful company--with many of their entry level employees living in their cars because they drove up the price of housing in the city when they moved there. Fuck Amazon, and Fuck Bill Gates, whose house is on the Seattle tour. Amazon and its entirety, as well as the idea of having Bill Gate's house on a tourist tour is symptomatic of the almost intractable systemic economic inequities in the US. It is more dangerous and obscene than anything you might see in CR. Costa Rica is a gem. Small country with just a few national identities. There will usually be conflict, but you don't have to engage in it. You don't have to be afraid. Just be gracious and use common sense. There are about 8 indigenous communities that are self-sustaining. Other than that, there are Ticos and people who live in Limon, and European and US ex-Pats. There is a reason why so many "western countries" go to CR. It's peaceful. They took all that money spent on the military and put it into education and healthcare. It has a higher literacy rate than the US...and we are such brag about being so great. Switzerland Schmitzerland...what is so great about that country? CR is gorgeous. I have NEVER heard anyone badmouth CR until now. Maybe you are the kookaboo one.

@@jschuler53 I have a lot of years of experience with San Jose and Costa Rica. Central San Jose can even be dangerous in day time for people with drawing a lot of cash from a bank. Nobody wants to be downtown at night or live there. Limon is worse. Costa Rica seems charming for a vacation, but I would not live there. I live in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico which is much safer and lively and functional than any city in Costa rica.

Like any large city, there's good and there's bad.It's mostly a lot of people getting from one point to the next. There's nothing unsafe if you use common sense. Here's some points of interest: 1:51 the Metropolitan Cathedral and Central Park, it's very pretty! 2:40 The National Theater and the Grand Hotel Costa Rica. 3:55 Souvenir sales in Plaza de la Democracia. 6:41 Bar/Restaurant Chelles, this place has been around forever! 8:30 Galeria Central has lots of stores inside, and 15:03 Universal, it's a nice store! Thank you for sharing your interesting and natural walk. What an atmospheric place. As we do gopro walks too in soulful places in Europe it's always lovely to see places further afield that we may never get to go to, we enjoyed absorbing the atmosphere and have subscribed.
