You put it out into the universe and it comes true. Love that we didn’t really have to break the bank either. Vegas pick is top ten protected so we really can’t lose this bet. I was so happy to see this trade.

Very happy by the trade, I'm glad it appears calmer heads have prevailed inside the front office in San Jose!
@speedybure2 ай бұрын
Calmer heads? No, that changed now that Doug Wilson is out, thank god!, sharks only have one of his horrid contract left “Vlasic”, and Mike Grier has already shown he understands roster construction far batter than DW (building a bigger, heavier team, what you need to have success in the playoffs, and not one that is all finesse). This is no Niemi or that nightmare Jones. The cooler heads are here to stray in SJ

To me the largest value component is that Askarov has 3 more years of development than Edstrom and will have FIVE years development ahead of the Vegas pick..... So, for "time value of money" considerations by itself, getting Askarov is already a win. Askarov has had 2 STRONG AHL seasons under his belt with TONS of eyes on him -- scouts/GMs across the NHL. The likelihood he is AT LEAST a strong backup has to be 85%+. His chances of being a starting goaltender are probably 70%+. Edstrom probably forward prospect #5 - 7 so someone that can be dealt. VGK pick has value of course, but as noted you have to give to get. Chrona sure felt like he had backup (at best) written all over him. Celebrini, Smith and the rest have to be stoked that a top Goaltending prospect that can come through the ranks with them all at the same time. Great, decisive move by the Sharks!

Just listened to Mike Grier's media availability, an interesting question from Sheng was "Affter Askarov said he wouldn't play in the AHL for the Preds, will he play with the Barracuda if needed?" Answer was yes...
@professorhockey2 ай бұрын
I think Askarov’s problem was less so playing in the AHL and more the fact he was stuck behind Saros. I imagine he’s not that against playing for the Barracuda since he is still obviously the clear cut starter of the future within the next year or so

Excited to see Askarov!
@AdamW-p7y2 ай бұрын
I think it’s still very possible that Askarov will start the season with the Cuda. He can work more with Speer and Nabokov as they said they have some things they noticed in their evaluation/scouting of watching tape. Askarov’s new contract included a signing bonus which would salve his concern over playing some more games in the A. He’s not blocked by a veteran with an 8-year deal which was the real issue in Nashville. Askarov is probably a top 3 prospect for the Sharks when Edstrom was only a top 6-9 prospect. Brandon Svoboda’s performance this summer to likely make the US WJC team also made Edstrom more expendable.

We got ourselves another Nabokov ! Great win Mr.Grier 👍🏼 He would be Sharks future in net for years to come! I’ve been following him since his debut in KHL and his first wjhc and I believe we just got a rough gem 💎 Nabby would make it to The Gem 💎!!! Hell yeah 👍🏼

ASKAROV!!!!!!
@donganem81352 ай бұрын
Yesterday I wrote in to oppose the Askarov deal if it was going to involve trading folks like Zetterlund or Musty....my point was that despite Askarov's promise, (1) our urgent need was more and better Dmen,, and (2) after building such a good corps of forward prospects we shouldn't part with our best to get a promising but still unproven goalie. But I have to give Grier credit - this is a good trade for both sides. We're giving up 2 first rounders, but at least we're not letting go of our most prized assets already in hand. If Askerov is as good as advertised,, grabbing him at this price is more than reasonable. As the Professor rightly says, franchise goalies are hard to find. I think well of Blackwood and he and Askerov would be a good1-2 combo for the upcoming season. This is gonna be a fun season.
@monkeychife2 ай бұрын
Well the sharks roster will certainly be fascinating to watch this season. Grier has definitely created competition within the organization if nothing else. I’ll be curious to see the difference between the roster in Game 1 vs Game 82

Hey Professor, Whatever Mike Grier isn't no one can accuse him of being inactive. I don't know this player like you and others do but, it certainly injects some hope that we might have a solid NHL starter in the making. Pete Clovis, CA

Can you make a video where you give a quick scouting report on each player and the higher end prospects? Just so fans like me can get a quick run down of the players' skillsets, and what player type they are projected to be. Hertl for Askarov is a good net gain. Sharks now have high end prospects at all three levels. Keep up the good vids.

I understand the need for a quality goaltender but it does feel like a steep price. Edstrom is good at faceoffs and has a solid defensive game. He has the makings of a strong playoff performer. The Vegas first is a pretty quality asset that would have looked great in the event that Vegas had a disappointing season. At the end of the day you have to give to get. Askarov panning out is not a sure thing. Hopefully the goalie coaches work well with him and we can give him the supporting cast he needs.
@-Lee-03122 ай бұрын
It’s a risk but we’ve got little goaltending pipeline without him He’s arguably the best goalie prospect in the world, so he’s taking a shot that would be enormous if it works
@sharkhaos_probably2 ай бұрын
I'm concerned this could be a hefty price to pay for Askarov if he doesnt live up to the hype, but just THINK of the returns: a franchise calibre goalie on a Sharks team with a mature Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Musty, Dickinson, and Mukhamadullin. Mike Grier shall lead us to Lord Stanley.
