I’m having a hard time with this one, mainly because we didn’t get another player back to refill the roster, and it’s a lower first round pick. Initially I didn’t realize he would’ve been an unrestricted free agent, and I was bummed we were losing our top scorer. But now I understand wanting to get something for him. I’m so glad you have your ear to the ground about prospects and the future, because honestly some of the phrases you were using were completely foreign to me
@Evan878723 минут бұрын
You're not alone. I think the trade was too soon. A trade closer to the deadline would have scored more. It's a first rounder, but a late first rounder. This means the pick will unlikely result in anything groundbreaking. It also didn't replace Granlund with any player, so the Sharks, who already stink, will be downright pitiful. It's (purposely) losing and management can't expect fans to tolerate this much longer.
@kenjackson625610 сағат бұрын
Thanks Prof, for bringing up the possibility of an Askarov-level trade with that first rounder. And remember, for the Sharks this year, losing isn't a bug - it's a feature!
@ponyboy976512 сағат бұрын
Seeing Grandlund go is sad but seeing Mike Grier turn Erik Karlssons contract into two first round picks is pretty insane. I’m really hoping they use it as a package for a roster player (particularly a Dman) since I’m not keen on waiting 3+ years to see how that pick pans out. A nice tidy bit of work and nice that we didn’t have to use a 3rd team as a broker. Will be interesting to see how they fill out their roster after this trade.
@professorhockey12 сағат бұрын
I think they would be willing to part with a lot to pick up an early 20s defenseman, especially a RHD. I floated Nemec and Clarke, but how available those guys actually are is anyone’s guess, might just be talk. Hopefully they can pull it off
@ponyboy976512 сағат бұрын
@ Clarke would be such an insane pickup. Guy would fit our timeline like a glove.🧤

I hope Bystedt or Bordeleau get to play in that 3C at least once it would be good for Bystedt to get that taste so he knows what to expect
@metsunie11 сағат бұрын
You know what scares me the most with this trade? That we see somehow Goodrow on the 2nd line with Smith because they need "veteran", if they want to keep Wennberg as the 3C. And more scary than that? The possibility of having the pair of Ferraro - Rutta back...
@professorhockey10 сағат бұрын
I think there will be a lot of questionable lineup choices down the stretch now unfortunately, we may just have to grin and bear it.
@tomdolan976112 сағат бұрын
I think more trades are likely as we get closer to the deadline. Sturm when healthy is a desirable commodity and so is Ferraro. The Sharks are also in position to take on bad contracts for additional draft capital and maybe a disgruntled player. I have confidence in what Mike is doing to improve the organization

Professor! *Raises Hand* Do you think that with Chernyshov being linemates with Michael Misa now that it'll impact our scouting for Misa? Is there a chance that pushes him above Schaefer in our internal rankings just because we'll get to see so much of him while monitoring Chernyshov and with Schaefer hurt and unable to be scouted?
@professorhockey11 сағат бұрын
I really don’t think anyone is passing Schaefer on our draft list unless we go out and acquire a young defensive prospect through other means. However, if we don’t get Schaefer, this is certainly an opportunity for Misa to become our second choice.

To be honest, getting this much for Granlund and Ceci is as much as we could have wanted. Granlund netting a 1st without having to give anything to a third team to retain salary was a welcome sight and getting a 3/4 rounder for Ceci just adds to getting 2 picks for Emberson
@justinpalumbo244712 сағат бұрын
I agree, I would be surprised if MG used this #1. The conditional pick is a 3rd via the Jets I think so potentially could be a couple slots higher than DAL 3rd. Do you think we give Luca the cup of coffee in the show? I know he’s young for a Dman but looks really good.
@Me-eq3sg12 сағат бұрын
Probably just gonna be thompson/vlasic
@professorhockey12 сағат бұрын
I believe the exact details are that it is the Jets’ fourth rounder that would become the Stars’ third rounder if they make the finals. Also, I expect at most we will see Mukh back up with the team, I think Cags will finish out the year with the Cuda.

One slight correction, the most recent LATE pick was Quentin Musty, in 2023, who is actually an exceptionally exciting prospect
@professorhockey10 сағат бұрын
True, but 2023 was a deep draft which was my point. I think 2025’s depth is more like 2022, which is why I felt Bystedt was more relevant.

Grier could also be looking to improve that second first round pick like he did last year to draft Dickinson. If they miss on Matthew Schaeder maybe Jackson Smith ?
@professorhockey12 сағат бұрын
It’s possible, maybe even a big trade up for Viktor Eklund haha. We saw the Coyotes have to give up 27, 34 and 45 to move up to 11 in 2022 (with the Sharks actually), so would the Sharks be willing to part with this pick, their own second and maybe a second next year to jump up to the early teens? In this draft, in may not be worth it unless they have a guy they really like.
@tomdolan976112 сағат бұрын
@ We're at least two years from the playoffs and three from real contention so it about acquiring difference makers on the apppoximate same timeline. Schaefer would be ideal for us this year but if not James Hagens and Jackson Smith would move the needle.
@SharksFan196811 сағат бұрын
100% support both this idea and the "packaging for a 20 year old" option. Someone will slip into the low teens -- Sharks already have tons of bottom six / 2nd or 3rd pair depth -- need as many high top 6 and top 3 d-men prospects as possible.
@tabby84210 сағат бұрын
Damn, I kind of wanted to package Granlund for a higher 1st since I really want to try and shoot for Eklund too. But all things considered, we converted Granlund's value into much higher value so it's hard to complain. But outside the 13ish picks in the 1st round, I read the talent drops off quite a bit, so meh.
@professorhockey10 сағат бұрын
I don’t think any team with a high pick would have traded for Granlund, so to get one, they would always have had to go through this type of multi-part move
@tabby8429 сағат бұрын
@@professorhockey Outside of the top 5 maybe, but I'm thinking if Granlund continued his pace here and we signed him to an extension + heavy retention with the slot opening up this summer, we could increase his value a lot, despite his age.

If the Sharks aren't going to flip the pick I am hoping Dallas gets a first round exit and that the sharks snag Blake Fiddler with that pick
@professorhockey10 сағат бұрын
Picks 17-28 are decided by which teams are eliminated in the first two rounds, the teams that had the worst regular season records pick higher, the teams that win their division pick lower. Considering Dallas is 6th in the league, even a first round exit will still amount to a pick around 26 or so.
@Dwagz0712 сағат бұрын
I never liked how they advertise conditional picks in trades. It's a 4th, with a small chance of being a 3rd. There was a lot of promotion from media about timo's trade netting 2 1sts, but again was really a 1st+2nd with small chance of 1st on the condition. Advertised as the minority/conditional outcome, rather than the majority/base outcome. Tangent aside, great trade by Grier.
@SupremeFallacy177612 сағат бұрын
It’s not that hard of a condition to meet though. Dallas just needs to make it to the Finals. They were favorites before this trade and with these pieces it makes it easier
@Dwagz0712 сағат бұрын
@@SupremeFallacy1776 Dallas makes the finals or the VGK/oilers/Colorado/jets/wild/kings make the finals. I'm taking the field 100/100 even money since the point is it either IS or ISNT. Sharks had a decade of regular season dominance with the Thornton era and that resulted in 1 finals appearance. It mostly certainly is hard to get back there.
@professorhockey12 сағат бұрын
Yeah this will be a somewhat difficult condition to meet. I will say that for the other first in the Meier trade, they only had to make the eastern conference finals, which the Devils came pretty close to doing that year.
@kenjackson625610 сағат бұрын
What a sign of desperation for the Stars. First and fourth AND not retaining salary for those two? I wonder if Grier was wearing a mask when he made that deal...
@professorhockey10 сағат бұрын
They’ve been close-ish to a cup these last couple years, maybe this puts them over the top. They certainly need the help to get over a team like Edmonton.
@idthejc9 сағат бұрын

@mattblom399012 сағат бұрын
Was waiting for your comments the moment this trade hit. Granlund has been great overall, essentially a late 1st round pick for him and nothing else? Not fantastic. Also, this means "tank mode" for San Jose for the rest of this season for sure. You cannot just make up that loss of production.
@Me-eq3sg12 сағат бұрын
Your never getting more than that for a rental on a still fairly high cap hit. It will make the rest of the season a very rough watch though. You rarely see it, but if grandy comes back next season i would love that
@professorhockey12 сағат бұрын
I think the big thing holding Granlund back from more value was questions about how he would do in the playoffs, and how he would do with a decreased role. Granlund has not made it past the first round in a decade, and he hasn’t exactly been a dominant force in those games. Also he is heading to Dallas to be likely their third line center, can he still produce without those twenty minutes a night? We will find out.
@damonmusha650411 сағат бұрын
Strongly disagree. He’s a rental. Granlund has been very good but he’s on the back end of his career. I’m pretty happy with the haul, even though this isn’t the strongest draft class.
