This basic foundry was a part of my 7th grade industrial arts class. I still have the sweet American Eagle from recycled aluminum cans we poured. Had a 2 man pouring pole with a sizeable "bucket" of liquid alu men ium. Poured all 14 sand boxes in one swipe. English teacher was on the tender end. Hammerschmit The Shop Master Teacher barking orders. Best instructor I ever had. RIP Big Al.

You really say things in a simple way so it can be understood, and I thank you for that. You don't just talk to fill space on film. I hate when someone goes off on talking about some other thing, when I want them to get to the point. You were very helpful and thanks again sir.

Great Video! Really informative for beginners. Only thing I think that could have been shown or demonstrated better is making a smaller version of the pour cup placed over your vent. Loose metal spilling out could cause problems for potential beginners. A small funnel cup over the vent can help control the metal better as you fill your mold. Otherwise, well done!

Good video for me, getting ready to be first time mold maker. Also, "something from nothing" is my family's philosophy. As to soldering, that is what I am good at. Suggestion for you, get your iron hotter, heat the work, let the work melt the solder. Yes, I do touch rosin-core solder to the iron tip, just to get some flux ;) I am subscribing to Makin Sumthin from Nuthin now.

This is by far one of the better videos showing the whole process that I have seen so far. I wish I would have seen this when I was first getting my feet wet with everything - would have saved me a lot of time, frustration, money, and I would have ended up where I am now a hell of a lot sooner. Hahaha! Once I'm done building my barn I will have a permanent space for my projects and will hopefully start making a few vids myself. Thanks for the great vids and inspiration, man!

Great tutorial! Wonderful to see it done so clearly, with just the right amount of explanation, but no waffling like so many do - and without annoying music! Really enjoyed it! Now a couple of questions: First question deleted.... just saw your next video, DIY Green Sand, so question already answered! Secondly, your sand appeared to be much drier than in other videos - is that because it's a different kind of sand? I'm really keen to start some casting, and watching your video has been the tipping point - I'm going to do it!!!

The only thing better than making your own tools is years later when you pick it up to teach your kid and you can see that familiar patina on if from loving use over the years. Maybe cast the "3rd hand" completely out of copper so if and when the wires break you can throw the whole thing into a crucible and recast it. You could possibly also cast the wires directly into the base. I love that your striking off tool appears to be a salvaged leg off of something, and I don't think that "sand gasket" is a step I've never seen anyone else use. Need to pay attention and see if they are.

Likin' your vids! On this project, I'd have gone all the way through to the bottom with the holes and then used the angle grinder to make a short groove from each bottom hole, then my copper would each get an L bend to fit in that groove when pushing it up from the bottom so that when they eventually break or it needs to be put away it can be done easily as there is no permanent bond.

Nice very informative video. Beside this soldering is very interesting job while soldering it important to rough calculation of some of concern to it. soldering area and mass involve which you want solder and heat up like if you want solder a one inch or two inch thick plate with normally it will be difficult comparing to one mm thick plate. it will be more difficult in the center comparing to one of its corner, what type of solder ( lead and tin combination) you are using, what type of flux you are using , it the soldering area is well cleaned or rusted and of coarse the practice makes man perfect . you have so briefly define the casting process that I have made mind to do it myself.

Is a specific type of sand needed for casting? I wouldn't have expected dry sand to keep its shape so well, but obviously you didn't wet it. Otherwise, I imagine the evaporation and steam would have caused all sorts of trouble.

Does the sand need anything added to it to keep it formed in the cast?

Very impressive video. Something that caught my eye, where did you find the pin locks that you used on the side of the flask?

I made those from 1/2" square plastic I got free from craigslist and the steel pins were cut down from a steel shaft I found inside a internal CD drive from a computer I scrapped :)

Do you reuse the sand after making a casting? If so, do you just add more water and mix?

I had a question _ Can i cast aluminum wheel rim for my bike and be sure that is strong enough and won't break ? It was splitting to half so i aluminium welded the weaker part as a temporary solution. Current rim is a aluminum too but not sure it is a cast or forged.

I would not personally use anything I cast for any purpose that could cause physical injury. Bike rims are likely stamped out and formed (forged). Bicycle or motorcycle?

Great course on how to cast. There are about 12 safety violations though. LOL! Still a great video!

Hey nice job, simple and easy to follow. I'm curious if you've ever tried sand casting for resins? Reason I ask, is I've experimented with making silicone molds, which are great for resin casting, but the silicone is expensive, especially if its only a one off. I'm thinking sand would make more sense. Thanks and best wishes!

Hi Carlin, No...I have never tried resins or silicone. Looked into it but supplies were toooo pricey for me! :) I have another video about making the sand if you wanna check it out. Thanks for watching!

What kind of sand did you use to make it stick together into a mold like that? It looks magical (from outside the field) It feels so fascinating watching people crafting stuffs.
