Sand Cone and Nuclear Density Test

He didn't tap the side of the bottle did he?? This would invalidate the test cone calibration. The idea is to, yes, fill the cone with sand. But the filling of the cone should be in a non-vibratory environment as would be the case when conducting testing in the field. Also, when calibrating the cone, make a little mark with a Sharpie on the lip of the cone and the corresponding point on the plate. Always line up the two marks when calibrating the cone with it's mate plate.

Ah, 2 points: the tapping of the cone was a fail and the plate in the field should be anchored with pins. But then I guess this was just an explanation and not to be taken as training for field testing.

One NEVER taps the apparatus while the sand is flowing because it will cause the sand to settle. This test is dependent on the sand falling undisturbed into the hole and the cone, and remaining loose until the valve is closed.

Ha we are all thinking the same thing if he did that in the field a contractor would rip his ass apart. Shure hope he keeps a close eye on the operators so his truck doesn't get run over.

Your standard count should be taken on the material that you will actually be testing. In the video he does this on a concrete pad, and then proceeds to take a soil density. The standard count should have been taken on that same soil.

Craig, We tapped the side of the bottle to help the sand slow into the cone. A vibratory motion such as this will only slightly change the values. That is not significant in determining the density of the soil.And, to ibsurfn, the contractor would not be pissed the contractor probably doesn't even know what ASTM stands for much less how to conduct the tests. And Alvin, the base plate is not supposed to be anchored. And the rest of you, you already read my comment now, and you can apply the same response to yourself.
