As its own story and not looking at the deeper meaning, I kinda see this as a look into Miku's backstory. I remember a while ago hearing that Miku does officially have a backstory - she came from the future to make music for us and stuff. Here, we see why. The future she came from is a desolate wasteland, with few people to sing for. Yes, she still has producers and fans, but the world has pretty much ended. I interpret this song as her going back in time and experiencing a time loop - doing what she loves for the rest of eternity. She lives in the apocalyptic future seen here Goes back to the past to sing again for the crowds of people The world ends and she repeats If that doesn't make sense, basically thus is the same Miku that "went back in time" to our present and will survive some apocalyptic event so she can live on to go back in time to our present, ECT.

Speaking as someone who's a casual fan of Vocaloid, I think this song (and the video behind it) more represents how the fandom is hitting a "dry spell" of sorts. Old fans are phasing out, and while there are still new fans popping up here and there, it's a difficult fandom to catch up with, as most music based fandoms are. Me and My friend are fans of the vocoloid songs we find on youtube, but we're so far behind that we barely grasp the programs, characters or how any of it all works, theres wikipedias out there for the series, but because we came in so late we have no idea where to start. I imagine it's this way for a lot of new fans, and so the fandom isn't so much shrinking, it's just slowing. The series needs something to revitalize it, some thing that can make new fans feel more welcome.

Hello, I am Japanese, and write using a translator. This song was made by Vocaloid producer Hachi. Mr. Hachi used to post Vocaloid songs on the Japanese video site "Nico Nico Douga". He was so popular that he was called one of the four major Vocaloid producers. He made his major debut as "Kenshi Yonezu" and stopped posting Vocaloid songs at the end of "Donut Hole" in 2013. However, in 2017, the year Hatsune Miku celebrated its 10th anniversary, he posted this "Sand Planet" for the first time in 3 years and 9 months. "Suna no Wakusei" is a Nico Nico video, and achieved 1 million plays at the fastest speed in history. This song suggests an old-fashioned Vocaloid song in lyrics and video. "Let's blast off" could refer to Papiyon's Eh? Ah, Right. "Out-of-place artifacts" could refer to Papiyon's Heartbeat #0822 (oopatsu -> 0822), but it's a stretch. "In electronic sounds" refers to Vocaloid in general, but could refer specifically to Hachi's first Vocaloid song, The Princess Sleeps to Electronic Sounds. I don't know if this really IS a reference to some of the classic songs, but it definitely seems odd to me that so many references like this are in a song that is supposed to be "a commentary on the Vocaloid scene", as Juby put it. It would be really cool if it was, though, and would make the song all the more better. EDIT: I guess I'll add in any other references that people pick up along the way? It would be kind of nice to have them all in one place, after all.

To briefly sum up what Vgperson says, this song is about how as the years have passed being a Vocaloid producer has become more and more difficult (akin to marching through a desert) but even though it's difficult and some old producers leave to do other things there are always new people coming into the Vocaloid scene and that as well as the fans love for not only Vocaloids like Miku but the producers that use them keep the scene alive.

No kidding this is a complicated song. I think I've said this before, but translating Japanese songs into English basically requires that you re-write a lot of it, because a direct translation tends not to sound good lyrically. So with that in mind, I think you did a fantastic job with this translated version. Very, very well done. And yeah, so much meaning to this song and the video. Super grateful to vgperson for her analysis of it. It just adds so much.

what i love the most about the character design and animation on this, is the fact that Miku is not on her usual 'cute/sexy' idol style, but on a more mature look, and obvious serious mindset. Kanapka Love OKAY SO FIRST - this meaning isn't something I made up. I found it in a KZbin comment and i agree with it : 3c. So please don't credit me ! BASICALLY it apparently represents the vocaloid community. The sand planet being like a metaphor for the world of vocaloid. Vocaloid has been around for a very long time, and as of recent, the hype surrounding it has toned down. This is due to composers quitting to find new, more professional careers, etc. The people behind Miku are her few fans, who she's still leading although their destination is unknown. At the part where there's a two way crossing, two fans leave to find their own way, perhaps they've found a new destination they'd like to go to. Miku is hesitant, but says goodbye and accepts it. After all, the song tells us fans to still follow our dreams, but miku also wishes for fans to stay for longer so they can continue to have fun together. However, at the end she meets fans that still love her music, so it shows how the community isn't /dead/. There's still fans around. But she wishes old fans would come back and new ones to stay so she can still be around to make music in the future. Xo

Okay I have a theory: What if this song is about Miku in the future, unpopular and disregarded, looking back on her glory days (on the anniversary of some important day)? The other inhabitants of the sand planet could be the other vocaloids who have been completely forgotten to the point where no one even remembers their faces. The wreckage has many parts that resemble those that would make a stage. The vocaloids are likely walking away from the wreckage because they realize they can't go on. Any thoughts?

This song does show very well how Hatsune Miku could be dying out due to the fans and producers saying fairwell to Miku and moving on to life but Miku can never die unless us Fans give up on her Miku counts on us the fans and producers to make sure she doesn't die out Miku is really and truly the sound of the future having being the first singer of all time to not be able to die out because she isn't alive, it's up to the producers to help her out and the up to the fans to help the producers budget so the producers can continue to make these works. Hachi says that the song is about how the community is like a sandbox, always changing with the times. The references to popular songs are a nod to how new producers are influenced by old producers. The people following Miku are producers, and as they leave, it's referencing how most producers strike out on their own and leave Vocaloid behind. @@literallylanie It's every kick-ass music school you goto. The great ones cover 300 years til present EVERY musical band, performer, Even Hatsune. Not only do you need to play an instrument but they teach you how to make Midi files in these school's and it's the Midi aspect you want if you want to create Vocaloid music. Once you master that and at lest Grade 4+ music theory you should be good to get started. Be warned, this takes years to do and even at that step you still got a couple more years to master it.

beautifully put. vocaloid is doing just fine, and is a lot more of a vibrant landscape than this song made me think it was, 3 or so years ago lol. new producers are creating bangers, and these current songs will later be fondly remembered as 'the classics'. every medium of art evolves over time, and vocalsynths are no different. we have more synthesizers than ever, and voice banks have become more and more accessible, the barrier for entry rapidly lowering. sure, we might not be in the brand new time of melt, where everything was new and groundbreaking, but we, as a community are thriving. vocalsynths aren't leaving anytime soon, and our art won't be forgotten by history.
