Candlekeep Mysteries has a rather rad desert themed adventure; Alkazaar's Appendix is set in the desert for it's entire run, with desert themed encounters, sandstorms, ancient ruins, dragons and all... including an interesting moral choice towards the end that will change the ending, depending what the players want to do.

Thanks for the full review, a number of the minis are nice new additions, while others are just variations on older minis for a long time collector. Looks like a set i will be picking and choosing from. Many of the rares are somewhat dissappointing.

This is a solid set let down a bit by rarity choices. It is clear they don't choose rarity based on game use. I got an adult kruthik which is a cool mini and creature but I have no use for it as I would need at least 4 for an encounter. There is no hive lord in the set either.

Very nice review as always, Theo! I need those dragonborn minis and that chimera, and maybe that triceratops at least. Though it seems you missed the mini for the Therosi(?) Chimera in the comparison of previous chimera minis. I only mention this as the Theros book has the chimera at 1 CR higher, gives them spell turning against 4th-level spells or lower, and has accompanying build-a-chimera rules for added customization. Very handy to have. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to your next review!

I picked up a brick of this set and REALLY hope I end up with the thunder boar as it will be nice to have to Icespire Peak games...I wish they did adventurer packs with these minis in them (rather than gambling on blind boxes for a rare mini!)

Honestly, this is a very good set for a new DM. I like that the Basilisk is a Medium sized creature. If it had been based on the original myth, they would've been Tiny, but I also like that not all dangerous creatures are enormous in size. ;) The Swarm of Beetles is straight up bad. It looks like lumpy oil. Consider the DDM swarm minis: Google "Rot Scarab Swarm" to see how this could've been done better! On the other hand, the Swarm of Wasps is really good! The Lamia is very nice, and probably one of the most interesting minis in this set. Actually weird that it's only Uncommon! The Camel is a really nice addition! There aren't many camel minis out there! Also, I wholeheartedly agree with you in regards to the naming of Gorgons and "Medusas". The Harpy should've switched rarity with the Lamia. Yes, that Yuan-ti is the best kisser! (Or was that "hisser"..? No..?) "Gorthok the Thunder Boar" is my new band name.

I love how many times our complaints align XD -pteranodon and dimetrodon not being dinosaurs -Medusas being actually gorgons -rarities... ok, serious talk, why is a CR 17 a common and a harpy a rare? I also don't understand why pteranodon is a medium creature... their wingspan could reach 7m in width! Also also... the triceratops is stright out ripped from the stock art for the JP/JW triceratops, down to the pose. Love the hyena (you know I'm a sucker for gnolls & co), the prehistoric creatures and, honestly, most monster! Kruthik, bulette, yuan-tis, RUST MONSTER, good ole giant bugs... even that wyvern looks cool. I love how 5th edition gave them that cobra-like head (although it could be decieving: wyverns have venomous tails, not bites... but I'm not gonna argue with the rule of cool, really a great design). All things aside, I really like this set, looks interesting! But wizkids should really do something for those floppy weapons... maybe add metal wiring inside? Or leave it separate from the mini, in the package, so they won't risk getting bent by clashing with other minis in the box? I know it's an easy fix, but I always thought that you shouldn't have to meddle with something that should come out of the box ready-to -play for having it to look how it should be intended to look, does it make sense?

Would you say the triceratops can support a hand made platform with some savage goblins? or in my specific case, some gnomes who live in a Dinotopia kind of setting. I like the color. The text and you voice said "Nagpa" but in my mind I thought "Skeksis, at last!"

Just getting started on dnd again, and pleased with all these mini options specially this one as im planning on DMing a forgotten realms campaign for my group. I do have a question however, are they compatible in size to one another? Are the icons of the realms in scale to say the unpainted miniatures and frameworks?

I would normally agree with a swarm of wasps being immune to piercing and slashing damage, however after watching that one guy on tik tok cut wasps out of the air with scissors I have to disagree

It is a guarantee when you buy a case (4 bricks) that you will get one of everything.

Sorry you didn't get what you were looking for! It's designed such that you get one of each when you buy a case (4 connected bricks). A brick gets you about 29 unique figures (depending on the total number of figures in a given set). ​​@@TheGallantGoblin Aaaaah! * facepalm * I had it backwards. Thanks for clarifying 😊 Though. I ALSO would LOVE for Wizkids to make Race/ species pack in similar vein of Warbands. Min 6 minis each. Regarding dragonborn you could have one pack for each of the 4 sub races/ species: Standard, Chromatic, Gem and Metallic. A further example: The Gem dragonborn pack would contain at least 1 of each sub type, be it Topaz, Amethyst, Emerald, Crystal and Sapphire. In a pack of 6 that would net +1 of them. Any be male, female, left/ right handed and different classes. Preferrably have 10 ( or 13 to have one of each class ) pack and Gem dragonborns be made of translucent material. My concept idea 😅 This could be done for any race/ specie. I second Tiefling and Drow packs too!

I was thrilled when they announced this set. But most of these minis look pretty bad to me. The paint jobs look either bland or just straight up bad. We finally get some desert-based creatures like the Camel and the quality looks like something you get from those quarter toy machines in the vestibule of a store. They might as well have just made a Camel pog and saved some paint.. Speaking of bad or lazy paint jobs, I’m so tired of WizKids doing these nice sculpts of bigger minis up with one base color and skipping any sort of wash or other treatment to give it respectable detail. Some of those dinosaurs look so bad.. And what’s up with all the minis done on one base size up? I get it for the dragons and other Huge minis upscaled to Gargantuan and sold as individual premium pieces. But regular Large minis converted to Huge? In my opinion this is WizKids running out of Huge minis to make, but needing to fill Huge sets in blind boxes. But what bothers me most is how bad most of these Rare minis are. From the Medium to Huge Rares, most of these look like a noticeable downgrade from other sets. How are they going to put out yet another Chimera but sporting such a messy paint job that it looks like one of the worst Chimeras we’ve had? I don’t know what this strategy is, but my guess is they are looking to make their non-blind box sets and pieces more enticing by downgrading the quality of the minis in their blind sets. Finally, what’s up with D&D? Could they not pull together cooler desert-like creatures than this for such a set? I’d give anything for the Pathfinder Battles line to get the same sort of treatment as the Icons gets with regards to amount of minis. Aside from their creatures being more interesting mechanically and lore-wise within the game itself, they actually have plenty of cool and unique monsters that have yet been made. Anyways, thanks for a great look at this massively disappointing set. It looks like it’s yet another set where I wait it out for the inevitable massive price cuts on bricks or a case, or simply cherry-pick what I need.

This is a pretty nice generic set, giving us finally some long-desired minis that never had D&D versions so far (Lamia, Nagpa, Jackalwere, Giant Vulture, Dimetrodon, swarms, Violet Fungus), as well as reprinting/remaking older minis at a better rarity slot (Basilisk, Rust Monster). Unfortunately, it is plagued by terrible rarity choices - why make the Harpy and Adult Kruthik a Rare, when you encounter those creatures in large numbers? Particularly annoying with the Harpy, as the last one in the very first Icons of the Realms set was a rare too. It also reprints creatures we have easy access to from older sets, such as the third remake of the Mummy and second of the Mummy Lord (from Boneyard), the Djinni, Efreeti and Bulette, Medusa and Androsphinx. The latter is a Rare again, which is a weird choice when the MM2 Androsphinx goes for like 4$ on the secondary market... There are some great choices though for a desert setting, the Giant Vulture and Scorpion, as well as the Hyena are very well sculpted and painted, and we have waited a long time to have a Camel mini!

When they released the Djinn mini in an older set, I was always so upset when it was pulled in a box. The types of games where i could realistically put one in were so slim, and no adventure had one featured. Maybe just personal bias, but as the whitest DM out there, I find it really uncomfortable running a middle eastern themed game for my players. It challanges me as a DM to confront the racial tones of a setting that maybe I dont get right or maybe misrepresent. My problem of course isnt with the minis themselves as this is a much better djinn mini than the last one they released, I just find that it along with the thri kreen, arent established enough in dnd for me to give Sand and Stone a chance as a random box pull.

I think that's an understandable concern. Though I think you can have that discussion with your players to let them know your worries. If everyone is on the same page, I say give it a try sometime. As long as you're doing your best to be respectful and avoid stereotypes, our D&D games can be a fun, rewarding, and safe ways to explore the stories of other cultures. And this set certainly has a lot middle eastern influence. -Theo

The Djinni and Efreeti are the duds for me in the set too. If you have a store you can shop in you can just go for the heaviest boxes which have a good chance to have big rares in them.

Just another boring set of minis. The beetle swarm looks good enough if the players have to cross boiling pit or tar. I wish WOTC would make a Warband or The Horde set where its just Goblin kind mounted, on foot, shamans. Another its just a set of practically every creature that can be undead or just skeletons.
