What is the point of catalogue values when the actual stamps themselves are worth 1% of Cat ?

I've given talks about this! There is a big discount for this huge quantity of course, and back in the 19th Century dealers soon used discounting against Stanley Gibbons as a sales tool, so whatever SG might do with prices it will be undercut. The SG prices are also for magnificent 'boutique quality' individual items, I do agree it's a nightmare for new collectors. If you assume that you can get 20% retailing these stamps it sounds great but it will take several years to sell most of them, hense the discount.

@@StampAuctions I was a stamp collector for 40 years and enjoyed the collecting aspect of it. As an investment it would have been terrible had I not sold up 10 years ago. Throughout the entire time SG cat value was nonsense - I really don't know who pays such prices. I do think this lot is wonderful and it is clearly a lifetime of collecting, but I think the hobby has died along with the old folks who used to collect stamps. I do not see a young generation of stamp collectors.
