I've seen a few videos on this topic, but I think everyone is over thinking it. I simply drilled the outer tube on the harbor freight pickup full of small holes and it works fine now. Before that it was only working sporadically.

Kevin, thanks for your sandblaser (siphon) suction tube plastic pipe upgrade, right on the money. Matter of fact, I'd rate your upgrade as one of the best on KZbin by far. Why? Because it is simple and absolutely works. Period! Also if you drill 1/8" hole on top siphon (where air line is connected and clamped) the hole ejects air for smoother transition of abrasive medium...

Bring water to a boil in a coffee cup and then take it out of the microwave and hold the end of the hose in the water for about 20 seconds of so. Then you'll find it slips over things easier but maybe taper sharp edges first so it won't catch while sliding on.

Hey Kevin. I made a pickup tube as you described with one exception. I drilled a hole directly below front two holes so you can see through from bottom pipe to top pipe. Then made a bracket to hold the tubes on bottom of blast cabinet. It works so well i had to tell you. I have a small jobsmart blast cabinet that came from tractor supply. 😎

i am doing this right now .i have fitted bigger bore hoses and ditched the regulator which came with the second hand cabinet ..already one on my compressor which seems to allow higher / more pressure ..that quick release on your gun may not be helping as most have a smaller bore ..i was on the verge of dumping mine but the bigger bore hoses has made a massive difference ....but still going to try your plastic pipe for even better results

I'm heading to trying this double tube method and seeing you have a continuous supply of media out the gun is promising. Thanks for the demo

Great video Kevin. I have been wanting to buy a sand blaster for a while now. Like you I have watched lots of KZbin videos on them. That powder coating is tough. The plant I used to work at had an industrial cabinet that didn’t want to take it off either so we would have to wire brush the part a little before putting it in the blaster. That seemed like enough for the sand to get under the powder coating. Thank you for sharing

Not sure about all powders but I soaked a powder coated part of mine in acetone the other day and made it soft as butter. If not acetone I imagine MEK would do the trick or some methylene chloride based stripper.. but be seriously careful with those last two.. acetone is bad enough, MEK and mc strippers are serious chems

I learned a burping technique from a friend who had never modified his draft tube. When his tube plugged up he would hold his glove over the nozzle of the gun and force air back down the pick up tube which will clear the clog. So in this case burping isn’t rude.

What about for 50 micron glass beads? I’m using them for polishing plastic with a vapor honing gun. Isopropyl alcohol comes in clean, and the air picks up the glass beads otw to the vapor honing gun. I’m having to run my psi too high to get enough beads up from a siphon gun. Smaller holes? I need more media at lower pressure (30psi) but not so much media I use it all up in 5 minutes. Any ideas?

To remove powdercoated finish you need air craft remover and strip it prior so that it is wrinkled and dry .. I have a professional grade blasting cabinet with 10hp compressor and life is way to short for me to remove powdercoated finish with cabinet and im retired .. you would need tens of thousands of dollars invested to remove powder coated finish with a blasting set up and it would be very harsh on whatever material besides steel or iron. iron oxide media works but it is rough on parts . I like to use glass bead

Hi Kevin- I am kinda lost when it comes to the siphon tube? I might have it all wrong but it looks like to me that it is just not picking up enough of the Blk sand what is the thought behind the second pick up tube? What I thought I seen was the top of the capped tube was out in the open and not down in the sand maybe I missed something but it seems to me that you are loosing some of your vacuum thru the top of that tube & thru the hole that you drilled - if you understand what I am trying to describe either that or I totally missed how the new siphon tube is supposed to work - Thanks for the video my friend! Two Thumbs Up

The hole drilled between the two, is there to facilitate movement of the blast media, otherwise it will create too much suction and pulse.

There is a balance you need to find. Too much sand will actually decrease efficiency as the rebounding sand interferes with the new sand. Try a lower pressure and see if it cuts better.

Kevin, looks to me like the media isn't flowing freely. Somehow, something is holding back the sand. Just my opinion, but an Uncle had a blaster and he used walnut shells, different grades of sand and man made media for thin metals and they all cut better than what you're showing. I know you'll get it, it just takes time to figure out where the bottleneck is.
@bentnickel7487
@bentnickel7487 5 жыл бұрын
I also think your choice of media may play a bigger part. If you're using 2000 grit sandpaper on a car, you'll work harder and longer, than if you're using 80 grit.
@richardsellers8077
@richardsellers8077 5 жыл бұрын
Round parts sand blast very hard because they are round and the media hits it and goes around it just like if you put it in a wind tunnel, very different then flat stock,plus powder coating is super hard, better to send it out to a chemical stripper, the best improvement i found for upgrades on a small blaster is to get ridof the pickup tube all togeather and set up a shipon tube with metering valve, you can make your own outof pluming t fittings and a ball valve, no reason to buy them pricey ones on ebay, this allows you to turn your pressure down from 100 to 45 psi, saves on media , does not shatter your media material so much and you canrun it on 3 cups of media and not have to fill your unit up with 40 lbs, makes for quick change over to different grades of media sand, lots of vids out there on making your own metering vales,well you spent this much money for what you got now you might as well take it to the next level because your suck with it now, and get a dust deupty cyclone or a chinise one they work just as good and they cost only 20.00, or you will keep clogging your shop vac up all the time, hope this helps, i used to blast for a living at a areo space company, now retired.
