How do Southwood (Kollywood (Tamil), Tollywood (Telugu), Mollywood (Malayalam), and Sandalwood) compare with Bollywood? How the South has kept, nourished, and promoted our culture through films. What is the obsession with Oscars?

The north is not as culturally rooted as south is probably not because of a particular kingdom but is it because of their proximity to the invaders. North is more attacked particularly Delhi where south was relatively safe and the bhakti movement

That’s wrong South repulsed attackers more successfully more unitedly North textbooks published from Delhi but prescribed to all Indian schools doesn’t want to give credit to great southern emperors and soldiers Example Arabs invade Sindh and win easily But when Ummayud Arabs invaded south India and Kannada Chalukya dynasty borders both by land and sea at around sane time 730 AD Kannada Chalukya emperor Vikramaditya and his army commander Avanijashraya Pulikeshi convincingly defeated the Arabs both in land and sea Another war Kannada Rastrakoota emperor Dantidurga defeated Arabs again later on In that era Arabs and Persians treated Kannada and Tamil empires as their equal from then on Infact Chalukya emperor Pulikeshi financially bailed ( Karnataka rich in gold mines at Kolar and hatti)out the then Persian emperor who was in trouble Rastrakoota emperor Amoghavarsha Nripathunga was one of the four great emperors of the world as stated by Arab traveller Suleiman Again after a few centuries we see Kannada Hoysala king veeraballala III stalling the Khilji military machine for 30 years The khilji army had easily routed central Indian kingdoms the Yadavas of Maharastra the Kakatiya of Andhra but Hoysala emperor put up the stiffest fight Hus legacy was the Vijaynagar empire which was more powerful than Mughals more richer than Mughal empire Babar was very careful not to antagonise Vijaynagar emperor Krishnadevaraya who had a 10 lakh army navy on both sides of Indian peninsula and who had Portuguese battle weapons in His possession South also fought and saved itself not just by geographical depth

Sir - Mayabazaar was a 1957 movie and it wasn’t dubbed into Tamil. Tamil and Telugu were parallel productions with a (slightly) varying cast. Thank you though for speaking about this movie which many may not even know of. My kids born in 2008 and 2012 in the USA still enjoy this movie. The strength of the content is such (extraordinary) that people of any generation can enjoy every aspect of this movie!!!

Great Discussion. I would like to add a few points in the background for the Telugu Film industry being strongly rooted in the culture. Nannayya, Tilkanna Errapraggada for Mahabharata in Telugu. Baghavatam by Potana. Sri KrishnaDevarayas aasthana kavis Tenali Ramakrishna, Allasani Peddana, Nandi Timmana etc. One more thing that is important to be mentioned is the intellectual exercises like "Ashtavadhanam, Shatavadhanam, Sahasraavadhanam". These act as strong custodians of Dharma. Tirupati Venkata Kavulu, Kopparap Kavulu have taken the game of Avadhaanam to the next level that even the Prime Minister of the Nation PV Narasimha Rao participated as Prucchaka. So a lot of credit to the poet's like Tirupati Venkata Kavulu and the inspired poets and avadhanis that followed. How can I not say K Viswanath is a pillar of Telugu Film Industry.

Being a little averse to the use of names for film industry in India based on Hollywood, I thought we should use the state trees to identify the local film industry. The cinema industries in India should be named after the state trees instead of names like bollywood or kollywood. Cinema industry of Maharashtra should be Mangowood, of Tamilnadu, Palmwood, of Karnataka, Sandalwood, of Andhra Pradesh Neemwood and so on. Here we are promoting the state tree while maintaining the indigenous nature of the names. Just a thought.

There is a growing group of young maverick Kannada film makers (who also act in, direct, write, produce them) drawing metaphors from Indian itihasa, puranas, etc. and making some absolutely brilliant films. In the past few months we have seen 777 Charlie (metaphor: Yudhistra and the dog that follows him doggedly to swarga), Garuda Gamana Vrishaba Vahana (metaphor: Siva & Vishnu to show the rise of underworld in Mangalore, gangwars, rivalry in great friends-turn-foes). Right now (a movie released yesterday Sept. 30) the film "Kantara" is setting the Kannada box office on fire - it show cases the micro culture of Dakshina Kannada such as Kambla, Daiva Aradhane, etc. Marathi films are brilliant too (watch the 7 part film series covering Shivaji with the brilliant Chinmay Mandlekar playing the titular role and the beautiful Mrinalini Kulkarni as Jijabai). With well educated actors, directors, producers, singers mostly drawn from theatre - thankfully, they have not "wooded" themselves. Sadly, they struggle to find a space in their own state, thx to the stranglehold of Bullywood on the multiplexes and theatres here. Hopefully the trend of @BoycottBollywood they will find their place in the sun soon! As for Telugu, I am waiting for the comeback of the genre set by K Vishwanath - his films were my introduction to the world of Telugu cinema which I absolutely loved. And yes, how can I forget the amazing S V Ranga Rao, his "vivaah bhojanamlu ... ha ha ha ..." in Maya Bazaar. I can watch this film any no. of times and be ROFL.

I do not understand why everyone gives lectures to others on language. in the Telugu film industry, one guy is there Gollapudi, he is a writer and a famous actor. in one of the interviews, he talked about language depreciation and he feels sad about that, in the same interview, he said, his granddaughter and grandson are good writers, they are just 10/15 years.. he said they can only write, Read and speak in English, I just stunned at that time. they are studying in India Chennai, how is that ? he is incapable to teach Telugu to his family kids and allowing them to learn only English. but he worried about Telugu, expecting others to learn, where is the value of his voice ..another example if we go to Hyd and Bangalore .. most of them speak Hindi, Karnataka ruled by bjp for many years, did nothing to improve Kannada language standards ...in Andhra gov directly telling everyone should study in English only.. so how can you expect skills, when Governments, Institutions, and intellectuals themselves kill the language, how can the normal ppl learn it .. normal ppl only come to industries, except few heroes and heroines .. they also work with limited skills.. just look at TV Anchors, they cannot speak continuously for 1min in Telugu without script... we cannot blame them, bcz we do not have systems to create those skills, who is teaching them, where is the enforcement policies, if someone is good in Telugu, he cannot run the family .. bcz no jobs for that skill, but if someone is good in just English, he gets job even guy fails 10th .. until unless you create the opportunities for that skill, no one focus on that... . 80% ppl are like Gollapudi .. who just talk but do nothing .....this comment is bit harsh 😀

Editing:Scren play - screen design . Setting and the theatres are the platform . director - implementing Manager

Bombay Talkies was the original name given to Hindi cinema. My theory on the Bollywood name: the word "boli" meaning speech/talk. Hindi cinema was full of talk, crazy talk! When the hero fought the villain, he'd first hurl 40 gaali words, only then proceed to hit his nemesis. Often the hero or the villain would render long speeches describing how he'd humiliate his enemy before the physical assault began.

Only reason is they didn't, especially Sandeep as a kannadiga even mentioned the name of Dr.Rajkumar and his contributions to Hindu culture sustenance of Karnataka through his versatile acting and movies. He was such an immense talent and remained on top of all the Indian actors. Hey Sandeep I don't know what refrained you from even mentioning Dr.Rajkumar's name during your discussion man?. The fascination for Hollywood comes from the fact that Bollywood has not got over the colonial mindset. They need constant validation or approval from the white folks. Secondly Hollywood does set the bar high and when Bollywood folks see that and where they stand in comparison, they just want to get to that level. Unfortunately Hollywood is very professional and is meritocracy oriented which Bollywood severely lacks.

ಶ್ರೀ iyer ji ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. Very good topic. I recall the movies of the great Dr Rajkumar even today each dialogue we remember but still watch his movies. Just because no vulgar dialogue, no odd scenes, very well scripted true family with good messages. I am sorry to see the horrible movies in kannada now such valgar loose talks, third rate dialogues, no story. They think movies must run on item song

This is how others treat Kannadigas and Kannada language They did not mention varanata. Rajkumar who mainly showed Sanatana Bharateeya samskruti , rich history - very relevant for this discussion No one can come close to his acting in Satya Harishchanda. , Mantralaya Mahatme ( as Ragavendra Swamy he chants Agni suktham) , Mayura , kaalidaasa , Bhakta Kumbaara , Santa Tukaaraama

'Wood' description is unique and basically applies only to 'Hollywood' referring perhaps to the then woods in that part of the world! Bombay film industry simply borrowed it and added to Bombay to identify the film industry then popular in Bombay and started calling it BOLLYWOOD! What followed subsequently in creations following that is immaterial!

Sir let me share the fact people like it or not. Those days movie director were qualified and come from good knowledgeable community. I kannada great directors those days were from Brahmin community, lyricist, dialogue writer so we used to get good output. Now its truend to black money, real estate, mafia, drugs, brothel etc.

He acted as Rama , Krishna , Shiva , Naarada , Ravana , Arjuna , Babruvaahana , Shreenivasa All the directors and writers of Rajkumar era were Brahmins. Only Rajkumar was able to successfully convey their work This was 50s, 60s ,70s and 80s and it changed for worse after that

Malayalam movies of 80s and 90s are the best movies India ever made. No 'jeep lifting with a hand' BS. It all started when Mohanlal wanna be more like a Tamil star from early 2000s. (Early Mohanlal's hit movies like Arya talked about how brahmins has to suffer.) 1 or 2 Jeep lifting movies succeeded, then it all started to fail ,and a huge crisis happened in Malayalam movies around 2004. Which led to characterless actors like Deleep and Pritviraj sneaking in to the limelight. Industry has to almost reboot and new types of movies has to be produced called new gen movies which are small budget movies with less known actors. Malayalam movie industry was always in the hand of upper caste Hindus and upper class Christians, but the crisis in 2000s wiped out most of the Hindu presence.

Who named Hindi films Bollywood. In 1960s there was a film magazine which was a 'soft gossip' magazine, a la soft porno. I forgot the name. Some "Star ' something. One Devaayani Chubal or Devi Someone. She christained Hindi cinema as Bollywood from Hollywood. Duryodhana s son is Lakshmana. Mayabazaar was straight take in Tamil. Gemini Ganeshan was in Tamil in place of Nageswara Rao and Thangavelu took the place of Relangi. (Lakshmana Kumara). Though the background of the film is Maha Bharatha, the Pandavas were never shown in the flick.

Regarding tamil cinema today, ALL the directors, story writers, lyricists, technicians etc. come from a slum (cooum) background. Their thoughts and vision is limited to the slum environment, and so all the movies coming out of this industry are steeped in this slum culture. No way out if it in any foreseeable future. No k balachander in the horizon.
