Be sure to check out my other posts from this awesome, historic era!
On a personal note: I was extremely fortunate to experience and witness the early days of House Music myself from 1990 onwards - aged 16. Then, nightlife and the subsequent lifestyle sucked me in and they were truly times of pure ecstatic excitement and adventure, and then to also watch it evolve in all kinds of subgenres; one more tantalizing than the other. I will never forget it.
The music felt like it was both energetic and magical, and more than once it was like an escape. DJ’s grew into celebrities right in front of your eyes, and if they were any good, they would take you on a long and mysterious journey through the dark night. And sometimes day.
Don’t get me wrong, I love all my fellow Dutch DJ’s and others who are so popular, but the music now simply cannot be compared to that of 15 - 30 years ago. DJ Sets would often have a start, a buildup that sometimes would go on for hours, and a hefty climax.
Nowadays, a track has to immediately start with a chorus, or have one within 15 seconds from the start, otherwise kids get bored and skip to the next track on their Spotify. That seems to be the sad, current state of the music industry.
They’ll probably never experience a music scene like it was back then, full of addictive energy from a new music genre that was quickly taking over the world, one beat at a time.
Consider these uploads from the Progressive House genre (one of my favorites) like some sort of testimony from an era gone by. These mixes will always stick with me.

Loved Sander since back in the day and this mix is one of the many reasons why. There's a bit of a back story though so hopefully you'll all indulge me... It was May 2000 and my then girlfriend (now wife of 18 years) was turning 21. I wanted to mark the occasion with something suitably romantic and thought about Paris or Venice as possible options as a surprise present. Chatted to my parents about it and they said, 'Have you thought about Amsterdam?' Despite the fact (at the time) I was well into the lifestyle and culture that is very well celebrated in the city of sin, I'd never been there so it was a no brainer really! I booked the flights and arranged all the necessary subterfuge that was required to get her time off work to make it all happen without her knowledge. Come the big day, I dropped the bomb and the following morning we were there! We got into Amsterdam on the Thursday and while wandering around the place (in a bit of a haze!) I spotted some posters for a club night that was happening at the Melkweg the following evening called 'Earth'. I'd picked up the first '4 seasons ep' a few months previous to this so Sander, and more specifically 'My Lexicon', was already on my radar. I was well and truly buzzing though when I saw that he was going to be DJing at this place not far from where we were staying (just off Leidseplein) so we bought our membership and tickets without hesitation. Andry Nalin (From Nalin and Kane, 'Beachball' fame) was actually headlining the night but Sander and the other Earth resident Per (who is a massively underrated DJ outside of the Netherlands) were down to play as well. We went into the Bulldog bar at Leidseplein beforehand to have a beer and then headed over to the Melkweg shortly afterwards for the main event. Shortly after going in, we were standing in the foyer part of the club when I saw someone who looked like Sander? My GF thought it was him too so we took the plunge and said 'hello' and, low and behold, it was the man himself! He was really surprised we were there from the UK and said he would have put us on the guestlist if we'd have got in touch beforehand! We had a brief chat and talked about his upcoming gig at the Gatecrasher Summer Soundsystem festival that we were also going to, as he was only just breaking into the UK scene at this point and it was a pretty big booking really. We got talking to some Dutch people after this, who recognised us from the Bulldog earlier in the evening, and they looked after us for the rest of the night. It was really hot that evening so the numbers in the club were down on expectations. Sander didn't end up playing, which was a disappointment, but we still had a great night. Stumbling back to our hotel as the sun came up at about 5am was pretty special and I was very much hooked from that point on. On our return home, I found the Dutch based Groove Collection forum (RIP Jerry) which was closely linked to the Earth nights. I became friends with one of the moderators and the following summer he came over with some friends for the second Gatecrasher Summer Soundsystem. They all stayed with me at my parents and were on Sander's guestlist (he did an early set live on Radio One from the outdoor stage and then another later in the Prog tent). I travelled over again to Dam in the Autumn to DJ at the pre-party for Earth where Max Graham headlined. By this time, end of 2001, Sander was huge and had sadly fallen out with Per and the Earth crew so was no longer involved. I made some really good friends though through this, who I still see to this day and have had some mad clubbing experiences with - FFWD dance parade in Rotterdam, Extrema Outdoor, ADE and Awakenings Festival all spring to mind! I saw Sander play on a number of occasions around this time and he never disappointed. Highlights include the Radio One Love Parade in Leeds on the Excession float, at the UEA in Norwich and Renaissance at Media In Nottingham. He obviously chose to follow his own path after the Prog days and I'm not going to make any judgement on that - each to their own. There's no doubting though that some of the mixes he released around the turn of the century were seminal and have more than stood the test of time. For that I'm eternally thankful.

So pleased to find this! I had the CD in my car for years but it got so scratched and eventually unplayable. 19 years old but still sounds great compared to a lot of crap out there today.

I pulled this off the front of Mixmag when it was an insight into what was coming. Listened to it incessantly until my girlfriend snapped it in half!!! If only I had known KZbin was yet to be invented and digital download would reunite me with this unbelievable mix… UNREAL. Can’t believe it’s been so long. X

Got this mix cd off of the mixmag issue late Summer 2000 and must have listened to it a thousand times. Enjoyed it while rolling and shrooming and there is just something powerful here, a sick mix through and through and still relevant 2 decades later.

Couldnt agree more! This CD together with the earlier Pete Tong Deep Funk Theory CD and Timo Maas Dirty Trancing CD were just awesome. Those 3 CD's meant I ended up buying maybe 20 or more of those tracks on 12" vinyl. Still listening to the CD's in the car in 2019....
