For this Symphony I usually listen to his father Kurt with Berliner or Neeme Järvi on Chandos, with Royal Scottish. For modern recordings (on Sony), it seems to me, Michael Sanderling is a safe bet - what I heard is wonderful. I'm still exploring.

Lucky audience. Whatever they paid as a gate fee was repaid handsomely.

This is one of the great Shostakovich interpretations/performances of ALL time, and it is only a matter of time before it is recognised as such. Congratulations to all who took part from conductor to the cameramen, sound engineers, and especially the magnificent orchestral players. The wind playing was outstanding.

The last symphonies of Mahler and Shostakovitch are of immense emotional depth . Congratulations to the SWR SO for going down the road of fathoming the profundity of this music.

How wonderful is Schostakowitchs music. It is so deep and powerful. Magnificently played and conducted by another outstanding German orchestra and conducter. Thanks to all involved in producing this concert. The quality is just outstanding. Also thankyou for posting this for all to enjoy.

Excellent 'layering' of the first movement string melodies.
@Ostdeutsche, is 6:18 the melody used in a DDR Lied, "In der Heimat..."?

24:48 COUGH. Not always it's the audience. 38:37 Notice how the player with the grey beard and glasses (on top) is smiling on the grotesque passage 😁. I was always wondering if that's a fun part for an orchestra. Humtataaa.

Es wär cool wenn das besser abgemischt wird. Erste Trompete hört man nie, auch bei wichtigen Soli nicht.

Hi @user-yo7bp9vk4d! Michael Sanderling conducts here! He is the son of Kurt Sanderling who died in Berlin in 2011. ;-)
