I love a bit of stat-padding and improving your average as much as the next bloke, but it kills the joy of Sunday Village cricket to have league players come in (early on as well) and smash it to all ends. Why not let the others have a crack and send the better players in at 7 or 8?
@Wally-H4 жыл бұрын
Difficult to say without knowing the full circumstances - for example, maybe he's been struggling in the league and needed a knock. He probably should have gone off when he got his ton, rather than batting on, I would say that. You never know what you're going to get in Sunday cricket. Another week Outwood will play a Sunday team that is more than a match for them - the standard varies greatly. Given the standard of Sanderstead's first team, as their opponents you might be concerned they could turn up with a couple of very handy bowlers. I play for a club similar to Sanderstead in terms of having several Saturday sides and one Sunday eleven. Our Sunday team might have three or four first teamers one week, and none the next - you just never know who is going to be available, and who wants to play because they had a failure on Saturday and practice is required.
@davidwillis79914 жыл бұрын
I've had many players in opposition teams get 100s after being dropped 4 times. It's not really an indicator that they're too good for the competition they're playing in. It just means you need to take those catches.

@@Wally-H I think I clearly stated in my original post that if you've got guys who are clearly better than the Sunday Village standard, they should be held back and sent in later. I appreciate your point about wanting time in the middle/ looking for form and confidence. But not sure I'd say hitting moon balls to cow would be overly useful in Saturday cricket. My main point is not wanting to discourage guys who are new to the game/ aren't particularly talented from enjoying a game. I'd be making the same point if SCC opened with George bowling full pace against a Village team. Yeah it looks good in the scorecard, but kills the joy of a lot of others. If however George bowled some spin 2nd change, then that would be no issue.
@Wally-H4 жыл бұрын

@@mikeairmax23 I agree with the sentiment completely but the onus rests with the club & captain to play within the "spirit of the game". It was a "friendly" (I use the term loosely) after all. Those centuries (with no disrespect the the Sanderstead bowlers) mean nothing at all in the grand scheme of things (not big or clever one may say). I understand sometimes it is difficult to assemble a team for a Sunday friendly, but if you have to play good batsmen then play them down the order at least. Quite sickened by the ego trip to be honest & I find their whole attitude distasteful. The only upside was Dan's exceptional work & that he got a pint of Pilgrim after... and why not!

This takes me back to a few years ago when I captained our Sunday league side on occasion. A few of those were 200 plus run defeats, as for bizarre league reasons we were going in with 13 year old kids and hopeless unco-ordinated walking mishaps like me against sides with Div A and Notts Prem players. We shipped 340 in 40 overs in one game, where my two death overs went for 50. Luckily the last couple of years we've encountered more sides that want to play fair, as opposed to bringing on 80mph quicks to bowl at kids making their senior debuts on a dodgy wicket at Nottingham City Hospital - well the location was handy if anyone got brained by the local Brett Lee wannabees

Terrible! That's what we had on Sunday, but luckily we batted first so didn't have to endure 40 overs in the field. Bowled out for 63 and they got it in 9 with 5 Saturday first teamers.

Having been on both sides of the thrashed and thrashee, neither side of it is much fun. Timed games are the worst though when you have an opposition captain who refuses to declare despite his own team calling from the balcony to do so because they want to get their 50 despite having 250+ on the board against a very mixed age side (including an at the time 72 year old)... the plus side was he got out for 47 and we found some better opposition to play the next season.

You know Sanderstead I reckon you're the winners by a long shot & why, well it was a friendly & all of your team got a bat & had fun in the outfield. Your opponents on the other hand while quite professional didn't all get a bat & yet they all had to field & so they won well who cares cos it didn't count lol. I bet the Pligrims tasted bloody good & I have to say that the "green" looks a great place to play but that the "six's" are easier to get at Outwood than they are at Sanderstead.

This is our (Outwoods) competitive Sunday team, we have a very very relaxed Sunday team aswell, called the Millermen. I imagine a match between these guys and them would be great (and probably quite profitable for the bar!) . Clearly there has been miscommunication about the strength of the two teams. For those who have commented: "a bit mean to send out your best batsmen" I'm afraid the people that didn't bat are of a similar level those that did. We cannot be asking our players to delibrately get out/play worse - plenty of dropped catches anyways. It was a great watch though even if it was a tad one-sided!
@SandersteadCCTV4 жыл бұрын
Hear hear! We have no problems at all and I’m sure we’ve turned up before with much stronger teams - we had a development game at home which took away our usual younger lads and that would have yielded a much closer game. That’s cricket!
@olih3224 жыл бұрын

A close match Sanderstead, a really close match. Could have gone either way. The portrait of the eager batting lineup #18:15 is epic - get it framed and hung in the clubhouse, suitably titled (something like "Before the Battle" or "Coiled Springs Waiting to Pounce"). Possibly could have done without the Dagenham Cleavage #11:20 though.

Actually played for Outwood many many moons ago! (As a school kid, in my 50's now). We would not have done that in my day, Sunday is for the Sunday team, not glory hunters. However, it was fantastic to be taken down memory lane, Wingnut was one of our top bowlers but can't really seem to remember much about the club really. Moved to Staplefield and played for them and thoroughly enjoyed it! Any matches against them coming up?

These videos go out all over the world and even some parts of Yorkshire. Outwood would have known exactly the world-class players Sanders were bringing. OK, have a decent opener or two to make sure there's a score (no good if the first inns is all out for 30) but yank them off retired at 50* and let the other lads have a go. Thought that was what Sundays was all about?
