Thank you for your film. My grandfather was at the Battle of Overloorn and fought at Venray with the 1st battalion Suffolk regiment. He never spoke about the war and i had no idea of the battles he fought in. My uncle told me a few years ago. I have lived in the Netherlands for the past eighteen years and visited Overloorn museum three years ago. I am really grateful for the museum, the people working and volunteering there to give us a full account of the battles from the perspective of the soldiers but also the civilians. It was a tragic battle with great loss of life. My grandfather was 19.

I was stationed at vliegbasis volkel in the late 1960's, U.S. Air Force. I was amazed at all the equipment on display. I was told that after the war, the land owner gathered the equipment & started the museum. The Dutch people loved the American & British soldiers who liberated them. The older residents still remembered the "Hershey" chocolate bars given to them by the troops!

In the sixties almost everything was displayed in the open. Several items corroded. I was there as a child with my parents. Later with my own children and the last time I was there was a couple of years ago when I was on campingsite in that neighbourhood. Then everything was restored and put inside of a large building. As you see in the magnificent film above. Very well done for somebody of his age. Nowadays there are also vehicles displayed from post WW2 such as the LARC the very big amfibious vehicle in the beginning of the Overloon museum tour he showed. This vehicle is from 1952. I first came to the museum as a kid and in those days there were almost no pavilions as you say. Just some woods and paths leading from one vehicle to the next. For children it felt like an adventure, you could really explore the area. I must admit I prefer it that way but I'm glad they finally were able to take them inside and restore them properly. And I'm also glad that the B25 Mitchell was finally painted in proper colours instead of the terrible bright green it used to be :-)

In those days, each of the vehicles in the museum were outside, on the exact spot where they had been shot down. In the early 2000's however, they were joined with the Marshall Museum and gained a lot of allied vehicles. Also it was evident that the vehicles that were in the woods would not be there much longer if left to the elements so the decision was made to build the big hall where everything is now.

Thank you for showing us the museum. The German resistance shows how impossible Market Garden was, and could only have succeeded if the Germans had not resisted. Montgomery gambled that the Germans would rather surrender than fight on, but he was wrong.

Thats indeed true! Cant imagine the fierce restistance of the Germans, the Allies still underestimated the German way to much.

@ger du Once the battle started, where was Monty? There was no overall commander. Browning and Horrocks had no one to coordinate their maneuvers efforts. When Monty failed to capture Arnhem, he used the US 101AB as static troops to hold the Lower Rhein which was a complete waste of manpower and depleted their health by forcing them to sit in cold waterlogged trenches for over a month. Donald Burgett's book on Market Garden details this.
@occidentadvocate.97592 жыл бұрын
Many of the "German" forces were infact Dutch.
@colinmartin29212 жыл бұрын
@@fazole In Monty's memoirs he laments the fact that Allied Transport Command refused to drop Ist Airborne on the bridge, giving them far too much to do in fighting their way to the bridge, and he regretted not ORDERING Transport Command to drop them over the bridge, but he believed that the Transport and Airborne units knew their job. This I think, explain a much of what went wrong with Market Garden, but I still believe that it was not possible to drive a whole Corps up a single road without the Germans continually attacking the flanks, and so the whole operation depended on a lack of German resistance.
@lyndoncmp57512 ай бұрын
Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. Check out the disasters in the Hurtgen Forest and Lorraine campaigns, which were far bigger failures. It was the caution of the air commanders that was the biggest mistake made in Market Garden. Brereton and Williams of the USAAF refused double missions on day one and Hollinghurst of the RAF refused to fly closer to Arnhem. Montgomery had zero jurisdiction over any of the air forces. Even the First Allied Airborne Army came directly under SHAEF. Eisenhower, who was both Supreme Commander and, from September 1st, the C-in-C of all allied ground forces, had full jurisdiction over all of these forces but he did not not involve himself. So it was Eisenhower who could have changed things but did not do so. Not Montgomery.

My Father took part in so many battles in Belgium and Holland during 1944 , I'm amazed he survived the more I dig into the details of what happened. Fights to flush out SS snipers in Brussels at the end of September with the White Brigade in 1944 and his love for the Dutch and Belgian people who were so kind to him and his unit particularly in Den Bosch and Apeldoorn .

Just to add a little detail: in some shots you can see the elevated cycle path that runs through the main building of the museum, which let you see the exhibits from above. Why, you might ask? I don't really know, but I guess it's because.. you know... a Dutch thing :-) It's only accessible during opening hours though.
@SandervkHistory2 жыл бұрын
Yes thats True! I think we Dutch people are way to obsessed with cycles. We can even cycle trough a museum.

Neat video. At the 9:20 mark you say, 'this is the beginning'. What is 'this'? Does that giant vehicle have a name or did they just call it 'this'? What is it please?

As a young cadet in 1976, I visited Overloon. They were digging an aircraft out of a bank in the woods. I think it was a single engine plane with a massive radial engine. I wo der what it was and what it's story was.

I visited this museum many years ago with my mother who was at school in Nijmegen during the war and I can agree that it's certainly worth visiting. I remember the interrogation 'coffin' quite clearly, it sent chills through me just seeing it and we should not forget the evils that were perpetrated during the occupation. Although the German weaponry on display is impressive, much of it was manufactured using slave labour who were treated appallingly. There is a dark side to a lot of this history. Lest we forget. Y
@SandervkHistory2 жыл бұрын
I fully agree! The museum has things displayed which is mindblowing. I am happy that i got the oppurtunity to film there and put it online forever. So we will never forget!
