Thomas Hardy novels are tragedies. His characters are tragic, having mental conflict, puppets, tools in the hands of metaphysical supernatural powers, under the grip of invisible, immanent, hostile forces and will, in different forms such as in the shape of environment, heredity, chance, fate that shapes the man destiny.
