For an [old] beginner like me this is fantastic. I think an appropriate analogy would be when you first learn three chords on a guitar, from this early stage you can, almost immediately enjoy playing music. The best video for beginners I've seen so far, thanks very much.

I always wondered why it's called draw rather than the more obvious suck, but your pipe joke answered that question. I can't believe I hadn't noticed that ! I'm going to start calling my vaporiser Sandi. Great lesson too ...

After 44 years of guitar playing I've had to give up because of serious osteo arthritis in my left wrist. I've started learning harmonica and lap steel, and incidentally enjoyed myself more than I have in years. I love this video and had hours of fun playing around with these licks ... and I'm afraid I've fallen in love ... If I was 30 years younger ;-)

Dont blame your instrument
@sk22ng
@sk22ng 4 жыл бұрын
Not blaming the instrument but praising a higher quality instrument that will sound a little better with a little less effort. I enjoy playing what I can afford which are Hohner Rocket Aps and Hohner Crossovers that I adjust the reeds gaps for my style of playing before the first play. The reason I don't play Danneckers is the additional cost of repairing the damaged reeds that come along with frequent playing.

O it's in the Key of D on a G harp. It might be an idea to mention that if its for beginners.
@grayaj23
@grayaj23 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that took me a while to get used to. Playing "straight" (C on a C harp) isn't very interesting. You play in a different key, and bend the heck out of the reeds to fill in the tones missing from the scale. If you're playing in the right cross-key, this puts all of the "power" notes on draw, which is where the magic happens.

You're a magnificent musician and have a lovely singing voice. This lesson is great, however, it would be helpful if some tabs were provided or you explained how you're transitioning between the components. I believe you start with the first, then go to the second, and then back to the first, but then when you go into and out of the third I get lost. I'll try to figure it out. Thanks though!!! Fun...!!!

Who is interested in the key of the harp, it is always the same. In songs you dont know it makes sense to have the same key of the original, but blues is always the same. If you are not able to hear a wrong tone in a shuffle you don't have the feeling for making music.

What I am saying is that there are people that have a lot of keys of harmonica and yet are not even up to the level of this beginning lesson- yet they believe they are entertaining. Yes, I am out of my realm here.

Look, it is all a matter or relevance to preference. On the outset, the keys, types, styles, and even manufacture of any given instrument is based of the dynamics of personal preference. It is like the ancient adage or idiom of apples vs oranges. "Hey man, Oranges are the best fruit, like EVER." "No way Man! Apples are far superior to those lame oranges." Forgive the pun, but it is a fruitless argument. Take guitars, some will vouch for Gibson over Fender or maybe rally behind Gretsch or Rickenbaker. Hell, I love them all. But then what do musicians do anyway? They find what suits their needs for what they are going to play. In fact, a great many find pleasure in taking el cheapo guitars and modifying them with a variety of pickups, strings, and amplification techniques to get some really dirty and greasy sounds happening. One of the most creative player I've ever known was none other than Link Wray, the Godfather of distortion. Doesn't matter whether you loved or hated Link, (seems there is no middle ground), he was legendary and one of the forerunners in pioneering Heavy Metal and Punk Rock. Harp playing, players, instruments, keys of instruments, makes and models are in the exact same realm. Yet at the same time, it is far more diversified because all harmonica players have a certain sound that either their conscious or subconscious heard, and drew them into wanting to play the mouth harp. It takes ages to find the one that gives the wanton player the desired sound, in the right key. It is almost like searching for the mythical and mystical lost chord. Once the right "Tin Sandwich" is found, the player is sated, but once mastering the "Mississippi Saxophone", a new quest begins, and that is mastering the pile of "Reckless Trams'" and mastering those to suit different nuances, and riffs of blues, rock or whatever genre strikes your fancy. Note: Reckless Tram is actually another nickname or pseudonym for a mouth organ, harmonica. Not to confuse, but associate with the musical blues duo of Reckless Tram and the Frying Pan. Two performers, Link Neufeld and Steve Dueck from southern Manitoba Canada. These guys are real up and comers, who have somehow escaped the attention of recording studios. Then again, that could be their decision. Cheers! Your friendly international neighborhood musicologist. Dr. ScratchMB
