This was an unexpected ending to a very long day of lambing... our first DEFORMED lamb of this group.
I've seen deformed lambs before in our winter lambing sessions, but historically have been from Cache Valley Virus, and usually they come out stillborn.
The jury is out on this little one, but my guess is that perhaps given the curved spine at the neck, and the locked up front legs... I think it just may be a different look to Cache Valley Virus.
More lambs today, but not near as much as the bottle feeding we've been needing to do.
Thinking we are seeing the effects of Maedi Visna, with some lower milk production on my older ewes.
Back to the drawing board when this lambing is finished...

Would love to see an update on the little deformed lamb. If it survives I would love to offer him/her a forever home. We live in Wisconsin and my mother in law had a goat farm. She just recently sold her flock. And I feel this little addition may give her a good sense of purpose to help it survive. I also love my special babies ❤️

We bottle fed it, and we tried splints to straighten its legs, didn't help any. Finally, I left it to its own devices to try and walk. I had twins arrive a little early last year. One was like a Star fish. Legs spread angled. (It is a known thing) anyway I decided to remove both baby girls because mums teats were to big for the mouths. The next day I made a hammock affair for little star fish so her legs hung straight down and a little weight was taken touching the ground. At night I removed it. I also taped her front legs together, with an appropriate gap. The vet arrived that night and we also taped the back legs. The next morning, I was about to go outside and re-hang her in the hammock and my son arrived in to tell me my lamb was running around the barn. We left the tape on for a few days and she never looked back.

Clean offf the face, it’s trying to rid itself of the very flegmy liquid!… try a towel, folded, and pin it to a tube sock pinned so it can’t pull off, then the head sock can be pinned to it to help overcome the torque!!…I did this with a kitten that formed in a cramped- for- space uterus! … it worked as long as I kept up with baby’s want for travel!…..very rough time as certain movements fulfill a need!…well all in al, as it grew by the day, I was so pleased to help it out although mom disliked the “gear”, and let me know it until I could feel safe about the removal of the extra blocking ability had subsided and was not needed any more!!….time is the tell-all for each individual!!…..always try…. No matter how hard it may be!!….always clean off the face because the gooey clear stuff traps odors only the infant can detect but can’t tell YOU…….and it’s sent to the brain in defense of death!!…they will always try if possible!!!❤️❤️👍it is heartbreaking sometimes, but never decide for them if it’s to be ended…..if they try,…..you should too! I've been following you for about a year and that little deformed lamb is the first time I got tears in my eyes. Despite the crooked neck and limbs, this little girl wanted to live so *badly*! She was trying to move and was so hungry. I can't imagine how she could make it with that twisted neck, but good on her for giving death such a valiant fight. I know we're seeing this a few days after you filmed it. I hoping that in your next blog you'll tell us she's going better. However, realistically, I know she's probably in a better place where the pastures see always free, the sun is always saying and her little bodyiss straight and strong. God bless you Sandy for treating the little ones who don't thrive with such concern and dignity.

@@crystalslattery1712 crystal, people eat lamb. It's a fact. That is not something that is likely to change. No one likes the idea of watching the babies grow until they are market weight and seeing them shipped off...I'm sure including Sandi. If I had to guess, she would much rather be able to have a market for just wool and be able to live and keep her animals. As the world stands now, she can't. There isn't a big enough market for wool. I would much rather the lamb live a happy, healthy, comfortable life with someone that genuinely cares for their animals than have it come from terrible conditions and questionable slaughtering practices. Wouldn't you? Taking veganism out of the equation, would you rather see these babies with someone like Sandi or someone like Tyson or Smithfield where animals are tormented their entire lives? Don't you see her getting attached to these animals? Do you not sense the love even as they are loaded onto the trailer? As the world stands now, would you not rather this be the standard?

@@crystalslattery1712 well until the entire world goes vegan, I would rather meat comes from a farmer like Sandi. Villainizing a farmer who is providing an in demand product pretty damned ethically is not the way to go. Making her feel that no matter what she does will never be ok is not ok. Where you should be is on meat eaters comments. Without me at eaters, there would be no need to market lambs. You could also go comment on the sustainable housing builders and convince them to use wool for insulation, or the clothing designers to bring back wool apparel, or the furniture makers to use wool for cushions. Without being sheared, sheep become locked in their wool. So no matter what, they need shearing. Make a new more profitable and more ethical market and I'd bet farmers would stop sending lambs to market. You too could solve the problem.

A thought about temperatures…. A lamb is born typically the same body temperature as its mama. But the barn is (thankfully) not at the same ambient temp. Small things have a larger surface area to body weight ratio….meaning the little ones will lose heat a lot faster to the environment. When you consider they are also wet, it’s not surprising for lambs to get chilled pretty quickly. The thermometer has really been a game changer, allowing the rescue of so many lambs that got chilled.

You might try using dry erase boards with an easy on/easy off clip (tie the marker to it, or glue the cap on it, so you can get just the marker out), to make it easy to transfer with the ewe when you move them down. But seriously, you and Carissa are doing a FANTASTIC job with the ever-increasing amount of data you're collecting on these births! ❤

The spray paint system will work for them. You need something easy to use when there are ewes lambing everywhere. The paint is already in the tote.

I think it's usually the good, the bad and the ugly. Maybe a pool noodle on her neck could help straighten the neck out some. They can surprise you. You and Carissa are a great team. You have so much strength and pull from within to handle what you are presented with. I think we are all pulling for you and the ladies to get it done the best you can. Lord knows you do your best.

Cindy: You absolutely can't use a pool noodle or anything that puts pressure on the neck. The muscles have conformed to the anatomy of the spine, they need to be worked on to allow them to stretch to accommodate a possible change in the bony structure of the neck.

I cannot stop crying for this little deformed lamb. I couldn't believe this little girl could drink as much as she did. Being a Mother self, anytime I see a still born or deformed baby...but this baby was live...I start crying, as if they were my babies...so, I truly do understand how you feel Sandi when you go thru all of these. God bless and I am going to say they are up in heaven healthy and having a wonderful time with our Lord and all of the Angels that take care of them.

It's my new daily obsession to wait for an upload 🤣 and when I'm caught up I scroll back an watch older ones since I'm fairly new so I can catch up on the storylines of all the ewes. 💕 So sad about the lil one who came out deformed 😥 but I love how your compassion for them shows, & you try to give them equal opportunity, no matter the end result. Maybe she'll turn around an end up being okay, but even if not she'll have been loved & happy with a full belly. 💖 Thank EWE 😉 for all that you do an for bringing your followers along for the journey, no matter the good or bad we appreciate you being so transparent about the farming life. 🐑 xx
