The desert tortoise is endangered because crows eating the babies. There are too many animals going to places where they shouldn't be. It's damaging the ecosystem. Feeding ground squirrels in San Diego is illegal for this reason. I'm fact the la jolla preserve won't allow food of any kind. Crows don't belong here.

In San Mateo (south of San Francisco) I've noticed that over the past 20 years or so crows appear to have taken over the urban scavenger niche that used to be held by pigeons. Crows are now everywhere, and pigeons have become relatively scarce. At the same time, juncos seem to have taken over from house sparrows and finches as the most common neighborhood "little brown jobs."

I want to know what happened to the crows and ravens in Mendocino and Lake Counties two hours north of San Francisco. When I moved here 29 years ago they were everywhere and many called them a nuisance, now they are essentially gone. Fair to say most birds are gone. Very seldom hear a hawk, haven't seen an osprey in years, you never see swarms of starlings which were once as common as crows. We no longer have to protect our vegetable garden against small birds, the grape growers who used to use preventative measures lose so few grapes to birds it's cheaper to let them feed than dissuade them . This is happening in an area that runs from the Pacific Ocean to California's Central Valley. Whatever's going on I'd take the annoying crows back any time as long as we got the rest of the birds too. Especially the hawks. LOVE that screech

I'll bet most people who love crows have no idea how many songbird nests are raided by them. Crows constantly eat other bird's eggs and babies. They are voracious feeders and killers. And they're tremendously overpopulated in SoCal. In fact, we could lose easily HALF of them overnight with no adverse impact to the ecosystem. A more level-headed state(e.g Texas) would hire professional hunters to cull their numbers. But I'm sure CA will do the precisely wrong thing, and allow these birds to multiply out-of-control.

Like knowing this fact will make those who love crows hate them? lol. Crows, Ravens the entire Corvid family is the most INTELLIGENT bird species.... songbirds are cute, people like 'cutesey' stuff... but Crows are mighty powerful, they are intelligent and human beings are afraid of intelligence because humans think only they can think. Any animal that shows intelligence scares humans and is always seen as evil for that reason... In truth humans fear being seen... and crows when they stare at you make you uneasy because you automatically sense that you are being 'seen' and observed by discerning eyes... unlike a bird that just seems so aloof and therefore 'nice'... That crows eat nests? is nature. So are hawks not to eat pigeons or nests? haven't you seen how Hawks grab pigeons from the street? gruesome. It's nature... that's what crows do and is part of the cycle of nature.

Same observation. A Cooper’s hawk was trying to capture a scrub jay, the jay was doing an ok job evading the hawk but I was thinking it would eventually be caught, then the crows swooped in and chased off the hawks. This wasn’t the first time I’ve seen them defended the smaller birds.

@@patriciamckean4682 For sure. We started putting out seeds for the small finches, etc. in our backyard but after a while we noticed the small hawks hiding frequently in the big ash tree next door hunting the small birds. Their was a study done about common animals like frogs lizards other birds etc. & the Crows are wiping out all of them out something Ned’s to be done to get rid of how many they are you can’t go anywhere without seeing crows anywhere in CA.

Cats are also impacting the environment. It'll be to late to fix it because people think cats have some weird right to roam. But dogs don't.

@@amyutah1934 cats are making a big impact on killing other animals as well they had a National Geographic documentary on average house cats & how they effect the environment but a lot of the animals disappearing isn’t good because it sets of a chain reaction when the number of species is being reduced so much.

Sparkle on the ocean Eagle at the top of a tree Those crazy crows, always making a commotion This land is home to me I was talking to my neighbor He said, "when I get to heaven, if it's not like this I'll just hop a cloud and I'm coming right back down here Back to this heavenly bliss" You see those lovely hills They won't be there for long They're gonna tear 'em down And sell them to California Here come the toxic spills Miners poking all around When this place looks like a moonscape Don't say I didn't warn ya Money, money, money Money makes the trees come down It makes mountains into molehills Big money kicks the wide, wide world around Black bear in the orchard At night he's in my garbage cans He's getting so bold but no one wants to shoot him He's got a right to roam this land I feel like Geronimo I used to be as trusting as Cochise But the white eyes lies He's out of whack with nature And look how far his weapons reach Spirit of the water Give us all the courage and the grace To make genius of this tragedy unfolding The genius to save this place -Joni Mitchell

I grew up in a place in California called now the “inland empire”, where there was a small crow flock living in the big eucalyptus trees that grew between our house and the street. They would gather episodically in larger numbers and making a lot of extra noise. I started calling them “crow conventions”. They would typically occur on a Sunday but not always. There seem to be a purpose or reason to celebrate the larger gathering and different vocalizations. Only the crows know for sure 😉and they’re aren’t giving their secrets away. Where I live now PNW, we have both a resident crow family and a migrating stop for ravens in late summer early fall. The crows make themselves scarce, if their smart. The ravens don’t like to have them around.

The "Inland Empire" has been called that since 1914 and before. 1914 is the first documented but it was used before that.

Took a shot at one but missed. Hit neighbor’s propane tank causing explosion and fire. Spread to nearby fertilizer plant which blew. Resulting forest fire took out the town and orphanage, crows got bigger eating the dead. Now they are ravens and moved to Baltimore.

I live in Escondido and in the morning they fly northeast and in the afternoon they fly southwest. They warn us when there is a coyote around and they help me with the gopher population in my backyard slope. Also more importantly, I believe they poop out seeds in my bark covered yard and I get free trees and bushes 😊

The domestic off-leash outdoor cat problem is not "also" a major problem with songbird depredation, it's THE problem. Don't try to shift this off on the crows. Crows are opportunistic and if they have other food sources they don't predate on songbirds. Also, guess what? Crows **are** songbirds!
