This is my first season and let me tell you the struggle is real even in Zone 9B. But SDSC has brought growth in my life 🎉 sending love from Valley Center! Can't wait to see Dezy in the garden 💖💖💖

Great tips especially the one where you pick the tomatoes when they begin to blush. I have been waiting for them to turn a deep red. I am going to pick them sooner and let them ripen on the patio table or window sill.

Yup! Check the bottom of the tomato for color. The longer they stay on the vine, there's more chance for things to go south.

Great video! I’ve been following the tip of rooting suckers in water and I’ve never had so many tomatoes. Life hack! Thanks so much!

My tip is for single string tomatoes I never cut the uppermost sucker right away. If I have an accident with the leader and snap it off then the one below can become the new leader. If not then I trim it when theres a new sucker. If it made to to flowering already I usually keep the flowers and snip the tip of the sucker. Once every year or two I do something clumsy (or a rude deer gets in the yard and does it for me). BTW, anyone else do a double take at the beginning to check if Jeff had 6 fingers on his left hand? 😂

I am growing determinate tomatoes for the first time this year. The Siletz and Bella Rosa's are doing great! Also trying letting the suckers go till they send out a flower cluster, then snipping above the cluster so they don't get too big. I live close to you guys in Santee, CA.

I like my determinants this year, but they're very close to the ground and bushy so I'm not sure how to keep past off of them.

I chop up banana peels or soak the banana peels in water and add coffee grounds to the plant and get lots more tomatoes!

Loving these tips coming in when I need them as it's my first season gardening. Is it too late in the season to start new tomato and pepper plants in zone 10a? Thank you.

We have short growing season. I prefer to leave the suckers to get more produce quickly. I prune bottoms and for air flow. We have drought and the plant needs shade from leaves, but once foggy mornings arrive so will blight. I have too many tomatoes to trim all suckers-impossible. Vegetable farmers grow determinate tomatoes and could not stake and prune at all.

That makes sense and is a perfect example of taking advice but knowing your own climate and adjusting your gardening strategy!

We definitely lose some, but that's okay. Keeping the tomatoes at least several inches off the ground helps a lot.

SMH. Yet another video falsely promoting the myth that trimming suckers increases production. It does not. It reduces it.

I think you should go back to 4:03 and actually listen to what he says. He even says there will be more tomatoes, and he recommends pruning to increase airflow. Never says pruning increases yield. Just that it's cleaner and doesn't need as many nutrients.

@@phoenixdelray7927 smh. A tip for a bigger and better harvest is prune suckers. What do you want? No you don't need 12 times the soil space. Dude doesn't know.
