I really like that there's no talking in this video. That's really refreshing!

Majestic! CLOU not available in Canada but thanks for your advice about sticking to a one manufacturer, one system. This way, certain that all components are compatible. Love your work, carry on!

Nice to see true times at the end with the amount of sanding pads - started my stairs and it’s 2 pads per strep with heat gun stripping the paint - after one step I’m done for the day - probably finish the job in a month.

A way of doing liquid wood is to use the saw dust of the actual sanded wood and mix it with some wood sealer has worked well as a sander my self and for floors u can fill the gaps to give a seamless finish

Before more people ask the same question over and over again: "Why so dark? A light color would be more friendly.." Where I live, there are actually rules and regulations for renovating a 600 year old house in terms of the preservation of historical monuments. You can't just paint everything in any color that you fancy, you have to comply with architectural legislation.

I have a sander very similar to that one, and it does a great job. However, doing a job of that size is murder on the shoulders. Knowing that now, I would use an edger for at least the initial pass, maybe the first two. With the edger, you can begin at 36-grit and move to 60. You can then do the 80- to 100- or 80- to 120-grit passes, not as hard on the shoulders. But it's a good job, nonetheless. Funny! I was reading through the comments, and another commenter mentioned using an edger, but he was very critical of the person doing the work. With my comments, I mean no disrespect. I have actually sanded a large area with a sander that is very similar, so I know from personal experience that it is hard work. I now need to do my steps, and I am really thinking about using an edger for the first pass, but my steps are not as large as his, so my orbital may be sufficient. We'll see.

nice job, just what I needed but I'm using the clear poly to match the floors. What type of sander did you use ? Not circular I wouldn't imagine. It would show the circular marks ? Can I get it at the Home Depot ??

That's one fine sander. Believe quite expensive though. I'd love to sand my stairs I've removed carpet . annoyingly it's painted either side which they seem to do back in the day. The only wood is on tread. I've oiled the hallway ID love to do stairs too. But I think it be easier to just paint it.
@Kottesque4 жыл бұрын
Currently doing my stairs, and had I have known how many layers of paint (approx 8) had been there before I started, I would have probably just painted it myself...but i think the end will justify the effort I put in, when it is finally finished.

unfortunately i cannot purchase a 500-800 sander as the one u r using so I am spending about 1/2 hr on each step. totally draining but eventually i will finish.

Hi Louise, not sure the product I use sells internationally. products are by CLOU. I used CLOU UNIVERSAL WOOD STAIN (Article No 2538) as the dye, then the lacquer is a 2K product with CLOU WL-PUR-Parquet Seal 2K (Article No 9650.5) and as the hardener CLOU WL-PUR-Hardener 1Ltr. (Article No. 9609). My advice is don't mess around with different manufacturers' products. If you cannot get CLOU, search for a good system, something for highly exposed surfaces such as in Schools or public buildings.
@louisebelanger396611 жыл бұрын
Wow wow and so beautiful! What is the dye used and what is the final finish? We are all trying to figure this out on our own staircases,,Any information helps to avoid disasters! A+

Great video, what is the Wood Liquid product you used? Is that some kind of wood filler? never heard of the wood liquid before...Thanks !
@disndat100010 жыл бұрын
Roger, it's basically some sort of putty, except, it's more liquid with more volatile components that let it harden quicker (roughly 4 hours). Also they mix it in different colors to match the workpiece in question and you can actually stain it. From a German company called Clou.

Nailholes are very visible. Why were they not covered with putty and sanded?

How ya, good video. Just in the middle of sanding my own stairs and the corners are causing serious hardship. What tool did you use and can it take different grit sand paper?
@disndat10006 жыл бұрын
for the corners use some triangular multitool, me I used the Fein Multimaster. Of course different grits, iI did 40-80-120

The landing looks too modern I would of went with wide planks or random width planks.

How long did this take? The steps are great and the video is good too, but no sense of timing. Thanks.
@disndat100011 жыл бұрын
Have you watched through until 08:20 ? These are net times. In reality probably 10 days give or take, including letting stuff dry etc. But mind you this is a big old staircase too. Doesn't mean you can't walk on it for 10 days, but imposing socks on everyone while you're at it is probably OK. So not a Weekend Project as such.

What about the risers, can you sand and stain those too?
@disndat10002 жыл бұрын
You can, but usually the risers will not be exposed to shoes, dirt etc. These risers here looked like new, so I left them alone.

What grid are you using to take the finish off....
@disndat10005 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean. If you are referrring to the very first layer, the old laquer, then I had to resort to 24 grid. This is EXTREMELY coarse though, I'd recommend you start with 40 and see what happens. 24 is basically like a steel brush rotating at very high speed.
@annettewilcox54136 жыл бұрын
why did you use laquer instead of polyurethene?
@disndat10006 жыл бұрын
A 2 component system with a separate hardener is as hard and durable a transparent finish as you can get in this context. Also the system will be usable for many years as long as the components are kept separate.

That beautiful wood covered in a dark stain looks awful.
@pound659911 ай бұрын
He posted about this four years ago. Because of the age of the house, there are architectural legislations to which he must adhere. I was watching another video of someone doing steps, and I said, no disrespect, the dark stain ruined the look of steps, after you did such a wonderful job sanding. The steps looked wonderful as bare wood and just using a water-based polyurethane would have been great. And he said, I agree, but that's what the client wanted. I was like, I get it.

Sanded particles bouncing up to the ceiling, getting supercharged by oxygen, turning mid air and falling right on your head. Look at that face, can't risk another hit.
@tamuro13905 жыл бұрын
As a owner of a professional hardwood flooring company, this is an okay job for the DYI. However, in the video the final product shows very blotchy staining. Which means, in person it looks much worse. For those of you watching this video and doing it yourself, it's okay. If you are paying for this finished product, I would be furious.
@disndat10005 жыл бұрын
It's not. It's reflections of the bright sun shining on a silk matte finish and the original oak structure shining through after intentionally only staining it once for this precise effect. A professional floorer might know this.
@tamuro13905 жыл бұрын
Nice job on the video, but my clients would not find this acceptable. There are quite a few people that have commented on this video that have no idea what a finished product done by a high quality professional should look like. If you were a professional and not a weekend warrior or just a carpenter you would be using an edger and not some cheap orbital. However, if this video helps out the DIYer, then it’s all good.👍
@disndat10005 жыл бұрын
@@tamuro1390 Thanks man. It's more than good enough and it preserved $ 7,500 in cash. And the orbital is a Festool Rotex, the most expensive you can buy. Peace man.
