Imagine how cool it would have been to able to see that interview that a young Neil Gaiman did with Alan Moore in which Moore pulled out some paper and quickly jotted notes and scribbles to show Neil how comic books are created. I'm sure Neil had some notion beforehand but the story goes that Alan really broke it down to him in a way that made Neil believe he could do the job reasonably well himself. Two titans in the game.

Yes! Sandman is among my favourites and analyzing it's flaws and victories make me realize how good it actually is. Hope one day you guys touch on Hellboy. Shoutouts to Zack The comics boi for presenting this channel to me.

Jim, I’m right with you. I’d heard so much about Sandman over the years and only just recently, thanks to the library, read the whole thing. Really happy you guys are doing this. Will Hines portrayal of Morpheus the Dream Lord on Comedy Bang Bang and all the jokes going over my head is what really pushed me over the edge towards reading this, highly recommend checking those episodes too!

I like Will Hines' Spider-Man podcast, have you heard that? He and his brother are doing as revamp now called Screw it, Let's Just Talk About Comics and in this season they're going to go through the FF run by Lee and Kirby.

How about some analysis of the Hellblazer comics my dudes. I want to bring to attention the awesomeness of my man John Constantine. When I go around the internet and I don’t see much given to Hellblazer, it frankly pains me because John is such a compelling character. The Hellblazer comics showed me that you can tackle some very real life topics in a awesome story. I like the usual cape comics, but I love the story of just an ordinary bloke trying to live his life, but he keeps getting caught up in some crazy stuff because of his involvement in magic. Other than those Sandman issues Gaiman did with Constantine interacting with Dream, he did a great single issue of Hellblazer called “Hold Me”.

I've never really been a huge fan of superhero comics. It wasn't until I discovered The 'Nam and The Sandman on the rack in the late 80's that I felt comics had something to offer me. I can remember distinctly the moment I discovered Sandman 1 on the rack and it was definitely the Dave McKean cover to enticed me to pick it up. The story was excellent and I was hooked. For me, Season of Mists story and Kelley Jones art remain the high point of the series.

Thank you guys. I really appreciated Jim’s comments about art and story telling. I’ve been able to really read Sandman issues with the “appropriate” art such as Ramadan, Midsummer nights dream issue 8 with death and the Jim Rugg special the cat issue with Kelly Jones.

Not really that big of a deal but Aleister Crowley - his last name is pronounced properly if it rhymes with the word Holy and not the way Ozzy Osiborne pronounced it in the song he wrote about Crowley.

One thing: Dream is not a god. He MAKES gods. Gods come out of him. Dream is dream: an anthropomorphic personification of an aspect of the universe.

Watching this has made me understand Keiths homage to Wrightson is spot on. Consistently spot on. Considering what both have said about the first few issues that's the kind of happy accident that makes comics crazy magic.

Revenge is definitely status quo for gods. Especially trapped ones. Thinking of Arabian Nights' "Fisherman and the Genie."

I got to share a little humorous back and forth with Gaiman and McKean after asking them about a backup story McKean did in a Mister X book and their markedly British sense of humor made me appreciate them and their work even more, haha. I definitely feel the criticisms of the early stuff and I agree it was a "work in progress," just a brilliant one! Y'all have me coming back for every video, it seems! Good shit, y'all!!

I remember reading an interview with Neil where he said that he based this first issue in the style of a classic British ghost story. Favorite issue has to be the one with John Constantine, especially the ending where John ask Dream to help with his nightmares.

I’m glad that I finally have the excuse to read the series. I dug into a few issues back in the day, but I couldn’t get far since the art couldn’t pull me in. I really enjoyed the first issue and your commentary added a lot. I appreciate that they attempted a classic Wrightson art style, but the story is too complicated for it to blend well. I keep thinking about how incredible this would be if Corben had drawn it.

The Sandman is great but I too always had mixed feelings about the rotating artists on the different arcs. Same situation with Invisibles. It makes sense in that each arc might benefit from a different artist's sensibilities BUT like the guys say here, some of these artist don't seem to mesh too well with some of these stories. I still always think about how cool it would have been to have Mignola on The Kindly Ones arc. The art on it is awesome but I feel like Mike would have knocked it out of the park.

Kayfabers! Quick question unrelated to the video. What's a quality comics news site that I can follow without giving Rich Johnston anymore attention? The clickbait on BC is becoming too extreme.
