In this video we get a little insight in how it was to be Sandra in the beginning of her solo career. Clips from her private life, etc. Included are also 2 LIVE performances from a concert, but just parts of these 2 songs (Maria Magdalena & Little Girl). There is a little problem with the sound in this video, unfortunately.
"Maria Magdalena" & "Little Girl" are from Sandras lovely debut album "The Long Play" (released Nov. 1985). Arranged and produced by Michael Cretu. The song "Innocent Love", at the end of the video, is taken from Sandras second album "Mirrors". Produced by Michael Cretu and Armand Volker, and released in October 1986. Regarding all the comments on Sandra's voice, one must remember that this was early in her career, and she was probably nervous - she seems to be before she went on stage, as it was a large crowd she was performing to. Nevertheless, she is utterly gorgeous, dances well, and is a beautiful person too.

This cassette was recorded in HiFi audio mode. Because of the age of the tape the Hi-Fi track is not stable anymore and the recorder switches to Mono mode from time to time. This is why the audio sounds so bad.

WRONG. Michael Cretu admitted she NEVER EVER played live in 1999. Everything is staged. Everything is as planned. You would think she sings live here, but she isn't. She is probably singing, but they have a mixer behind the stage which is auto tuning her voice. Ergo, not live. Cretu on her concerts: "All concerts we did with Sandra up until she retired was done either with playback or with a auto tune mixer behind the stage. It proved very effective, and it stayed with her image as the artist we established her as." Retired meaning before her "comeback". Sandra is one of the most known cases of "playback-artists" from the 80s. This is fact. Think what you will, and if you have the illusion its her singing in true form (its her, just very autotuned), then you are delusional.

Taka To Sandra has a very distinctive voice on all her songs (even today), and that voice can hardly be said to be authentic. Also, there is numerous episodes of her playback and auto tune failing, and she sounds like a chicken on steroids. However, as for these songs, as we are listening to here, it was at the VERY beginning of her career, and seems they are using a very bad form of auto tune with no playback. And this is why it sounds like it does. Sandra is a well documented case of what was the basis of the 80s pop culture, which transcended into the 90s era, namely the disappearance of pure live concerts with favoring the playback, mostly I think for budgets because it doesn't cost much for an artist to sing playback to their song, as opposed to having an entire band around. But yeah, for this video, I would actually agree that its probably her voice. But you can also hear how much she is in agony for TRYING to sound like the synthetic voice that Cretu created on his mixer. This is probably why it was never attempted again, because it just didn't work. Kinda funny though, in the end where she is in the studio, she is not even singing.. lol. Anyway, Sandra became one of the best selling artists of the 80s, and one of Germanys top selling exports ever. And she is legendary. Without her, Enigma would not be the same.

Michael Vedal I have copies of concert videos from Germany in the early 90's where she is singing live. Saying she never did it again is wrong! For instance, in a concert recording from Pforzheim, Germany 11.07.1991, she is ending her concert with "One More Night". Even thoug the quality of this video is very bad, you can clearly hear that "One More Night" is totally live. It's true that artists in the 80's often performed playback, especially in TV-shows that Sandra often appeared in. But I agree With you Michael, that Enigma would not be the same without Sandra's voice. What would songs like "I love you... I'll kill you" be without her soft, whispering voice...

Because she sounds like a chicken on steroids, and letting her sing live "ruins" her voice that Cretu created for her. He is, on record, saying she NEVER sang true live at all during her career with him. This video is perhaps the closest thing she ever did to live, as her auto tune is failing miserably. Good job on hunting this down, as its probably the only one in existence that lets you listen to how a dreadful voice she really has without all the mixing.

The most videos here in KZbin are from TV shows in the 80's where it was a standard to sing playback. In her concerts, as we see, she sang live, but many of them aren't recorded. And now she is sometimes singing live over a playback, sometimes only playback because she's lost her voice long ago, reasons being smoking, alcohol etc.

This problem with sound can be avoided by capturing the tape directly of the head amplifier, if you have time and some will I can help with. VHS-Decode and HiFi-Decode can improve video quality.

I dont understand all that bullshit about her singing live or singing not live. it was the 80's! back then even the HUGE stars didnt perform live all the time. I think most tv shows werent capable to do live music! we can see that with kate bush, eurythmics or even tina turner. Sandra here, she sounds different from her records, but you can clearly here on records that her voice is overdubbed (like ABBA did it too) so her voice isnt that strong live, which is ok. I mean look at live performances of MADONNA from 1987... its a mess, but I still enjoy all of the music esp. from the 80s AND I dont think autotune was even invented.

She did when she was younger but she wanted to be an international artist and have an international sound so it made sense that the majority of her solomusic, she did in english. It worked, she was big in almost all countries except US and UK.
