Just as a disclaimer - I do say this in the video, but in case you don’t watch it all, my doctor told me to ditch the makeup, so please know I would otherwise never throw away so much otherwise “good” makeup and I would not encourage anyone to be this wasteful without a really good reason. I am using this as a (very expensive) lesson to curb hoarding makeup and going forward I will focus on finishing products before buying lots of new releases. It really opened my eyes to the fact that I cannot view my makeup as a “collection”, because it does of course expire and I don’t want to hang on to makeup I cannot use. This may not be right for everyone, but it feels like it’s a shift in my own thinking and makeup consumption :)

I totally get what you mean! I have been more mindful of buying makeup lately. Now I put a lot more thought into my purchases- ie will I be using this on a daily basis, how does this fit into my current routine and so on. And the truth is no, I don’t need the latest eyeshadow palette when I end up using the same neutral shades anyway 🙊 It takes ages for me to pan eyeshadow so I definitely end up throwing them out.

Yes, I don't have a big collection, but this is a prime reason why it is smart to not have a huge collection because is something like this happens you have to throw it all. And that had to be a bitter pill to swallow. A good lesson for all of us. I personally prefer a smaller collection but this just reinforces it, I appreciate you posting this.

@@sitihajarabdulaziz2888 Yesss, a fellow neutral eyeshadow friend 😁 And that is how I will approach makeup buying going forward, I have been unsubscribing from lots of makeup newsletters the last few days, to eliminate the temptation to try every new release😅
@SandraSkaar2 жыл бұрын
@@taramisu9978 Yes, it was for sure a bitter pill and I took a few days just to accept it before sitting down and doing this declutter. But it absolutely taught me the lesson you already knew - a large collection is kind of a liability in these cases. Small and precious will be the way forward from now on! Thank you for watching and sharing ❤

hi i have a note book and a book of coloured spots and when i buy a product i jot it down in my note book dates and add a coloured spot on my product and into my book so i can keep track , so i will never use anything which has expired , i am a RN and have seen too many times staff infections so it will never happen to me , i buy travel size mascara and discard every three months i have had surgery on both my eyes , so better safe than sorry .that goes for eyeliner too .but i have a special eye cleanser from my optician following my normal eye cleanser. plus eye drops. i clean my makeup weekly and my brushes each time i use them , i have two foundations one for work one for days off , reasons my work foundation is estee lauder double wear and i work in in intensive care unit and dont have time to touch up so this product lasts 14 hrs which is perfect for me ,my other is Armani luminous silk and is fabulous.

With how many Mac products you are getting rid of, if there’s a Mac near you I would definitely see if you can do the exchange of old Mac makeup into a free lipstick. (Back to MAC) Haven’t done it in a few years so unsure if they still do it. But hey if they do 1 or more less lipsticks you would have to pay for. ☺

I don’t know if that would be still too risky but as for the charlotte tilbury highlighting wand, maybe you can just remove the sponge from the packaging…there should be a regular nozzle underneath it
@SandraSkaar2 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, this is SUCH a good tip!!! Just genius - I ran and tried it with my current one and what do you know?! It's a perfect little squeeze nozzle that can still be turned on/off like before. Thank you so much for sharing, I feel so much better purchasing this in the future now, knowing it will be so easy to use in a sanitary way 🤩🥰

@@SandraSkaar I´m so glad I could help :) it has to be devastating to get rid of your favorites, especially when they haven´t gotten old yet. However, your health definitly comes first and you are perfectly beautiful without any makeup. I hope you can find some new treasures in the future and have a lot of fun doing so. I had some perioral dermatitis in the past and couldn´t use any of my makeup for weeks. I was so afraid I would have to stop using it all together but fortunatly that wasn´t the case. However, ever since then I do a lot less to not trigger my skin again, so I understand that you are nervous.

Mac has a recycle program so you can “back to Mac” your old/empty ones for a free lipstick. I think it’s 6 empties needed.

So sorry this happened to you. It’s a wake up call for me to throw away the older products. Hopefully you can back to Mac some of the products? (Idk if they do that everywhere but hopefully they do.)

Thank you! And unfortunately, last time I checked, they don't do back to Mac in Norway, so I will have to save them up for when I travel. But thanks for the reminder, because I was about to just throw them out!

I've been decluttering for years in the aim of having a very small collection. I have around 40 products but the majority or cream so I've went through them again and put aside products I havent worn for a while. Anything I don't wear in the next few months I'm getting rid of. I have 5 cream and liquid blushes which I'll absolutely never get through!

I can definitely relate to the struggle of never being able to get through certain products 😫 Thank you for watching and for sharing! 🤗💖

Lol your after declutter collection is the size of my current collection. 😂 Although I have more concealers as I tend to not use foundation much since I feel like my skin can't breath and have found that going entirely without foundation during the summer is more my speed. I also had a bad experience with a foundation a few years back when I tended to buy a lot more products. It doesn't help that my summer skin tone is two shades darker than my winter skin tone! I remember putting it on and my face felt like it was set on fire. So from then on I have tended to as a rule only buy one foundation bottle and use it up before I ever buy a second bottle. Glad you're all healed up now and looking forward to your restock makeup video as I am on the hunt for a new foundation.

Definitely have to invest into a metal or glass palette that you can put your ward things onto so they never touch your face. Like makeup artists use.

Oh wow, this is a major reminder to throw out some make-up, esp. my lipsticks which I’ve maybe put on twice since the pandemic started, so well over two years. Will also be more assiduous with the alcohol misting. Definitely a good idea to note the month and year of purchase somewhere on new items or in a notebook. I decluttered my make-up about a year ago, and it’s really satisfying and practical to have it all fit into one small open container for easy access and use, knowing that everything is fairly new. (The lipsticks have been in a drawer unused, lol.) Basically one eyeshadow palette will easily last a year. Ditto concealer. Foundation about six months if worn daily. Blush two years easy. One of each category is really plenty, anything else is for choice knowing you likely won’t hit pan before it expires. It’s just a matter of knowing the good brands/shades for you with experience and not always going for every new thing. Maybe try and make a list of your absolute fave in every category and only repurchase that to start. There’s a fun Insta account called Discontinued Makeup or something like that, which really illustrates the ocean of products that come in and out and therefore how one couldn’t possibly try everything. It all just ends up being so much money and plastic waste. Great video! Glad you’re feeling better. (:

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, Emmy, I really appreciate it! So much fantastic advice that I think is helpful to a lot of us 🤗 And I just scrolled through that insta for a good 20 minutes, it's incredible and it really does help to encourage looking rather than buying when it comes to new releases! As I'm making a shopping list now, I actually did just that, trying to keep to one product per category and just really think through what will work for me on a daily basis! And I will *for sure* be writing the date on them this time 😅 Thank you for watching and commenting ❤️
