It's hard to believe this was just a patch of sandy grass and weeds last year! Look at all this abundance! But hey - who planted these suspicious curcurbits???

Today we take a tour through all the gardens and I share what worked and what didn't, along with planting sweet potatoes, ridged gourds/angle gourds, chopping and dropping, and sharing gardening tips. We used principles from permaculture, Ernst Goetsch, Stefan Sobkowiak, Bill Mollison, Steve Solomon, Geoff Lawton, Charles Dowding, Ruth Stout, alley cropping, food forests, edible hedges and more to build an incredible, productive garden.

That’s a great question! Some thing we are definitely always thinking about and planning for. I love your system. My only question is, do you have a bug issue increase from laying down the old food for a cover crop. I would think you’d have an excess of bugs eating up your other plants.

This is exactly how I garden , mulch ( compost) on the spot. We been on our acerage for 6 months and we could survive from the food we produce. Was awesome to see someone else verify the way I do things, don’t really know anyone personally who does it this way, just seemed common sense to me years ago.

You're like my Dad, he could plant an Egg and grow a Chicken. When I was young and he had us working in the garden I'd grumble but I learned a lot, which has helped me feed my Family at times. Back then I always said that I was going to do something that wouldn't require me to do gardens, but as I aged I came to realize the value of knowing how to grow your own food, especially during the "Great Recession" and the past year or so. Dad passed on a few years ago but what I wouldn't give to be working a garden with him just one more time. Thanks for your content, I always manage to learn something or think about a better/different way to do things.

In some neighborhoods people lock their porch doors so they don't wind up with a hall full of zucchini.

It's crazy I had a garden in the Pacific Northwest grew tomatoes and tomatillos for years. Never had an insect problem at all with either. I am inclined to believe that the insects that destroy tomatillo are found in southern locations. Never saw a cutworm until I moved to southern Utah, and I'll tell you those cutworms are garden hose sized!!!! And don't smash! They are rubberized!!! So off to the chickens they go! After years of gardening the volunteer tomatillos were better than the seeds from the store, so I would replant volunteer tomatillos and get an amazing harvest.

Very insightful. Thanks a stack for sharing your experience! Now I know what real no dig permaculture looks like. I was shocked when you chop down Cannas en masse for cover & compost. You must be in a very warm climate for them to grow back within the season. I'm in northern Germany where I am delighted if my Canna actually reaches blossom maturity. Whatever, this is a delightful, easy-go-lucky example of gardening without the stress of need-to-work-out. And I especially like your tool of choice!

Variety is the key to attracting enough predators to eat the pests, I've found. For natural pest control, support the ecosystem to attract help. Some of the biggest hungriest spiders in the country like to have places to perch to hunt. The green sphinx spider joined my army this year and she has taken up residence atop a marigold flower. The combined synergy of their efforts has given me a joy and inner peace that no selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor could EVER offer....

Dave the smaller tomatillos have the most flavor. I always pick the smallest ones out to make salsa. The darker green they are the more flavor they have. Those twining plants look like morning glories. Cannas are related to bananas and you can use the leaves as plates for barbeque or to make packets of rice and fruit/vegetables to steam. Canna roots are edible but take a lot of cooking to get them softened up. It's strictly a famine food. You can grow daylilies for the edible blooms and roots.

Just discovered and subscribed. At last I found a KZbin gardener who has actual experienced gardening in the tropics. A pity you seem to have returned to the mainland but your presentations - augmented with humour - on producing soil are very entertaining and helpful. I live in fragile soil Niue, 19° south of the equator in the Pacific. Finding the challenge of vegetables outside traditional Niuean gardening (which I did for years), is very exciting because it is 100% reliant on creating my own soil. It's kind of a retirement career change and I am loving it. Thanks, will check out your website, your book and the various books that you have recommended.

Thanks for the garden tour! I had to put most of my fruiting plants in raised beds and pots to help with pest pressure. One thing I try to do is encourage beneficial insects and one of my favorites is any type of wasp. They love caterpillars, slugs and snails. This year the wasps are a little late probably due to this wonky weather and I have a lot of tomato worms. Thankfully the wasps have been catching up with that population. Now I’m waiting on my lacewing eggs to show up for the aphids. Also, if I can keep my chickens from eating it down to the ground (again), I’ll be using comfrey for chop and drop compost.

Please dispel the myth of adding green (un-composted plant material) in garden beds. Have always heard that doing so robs soil of nitrogen. I love the 'Chop and drop' concept.

What Kind of tomatoes do you have that don't mind heat? I'm in AZ and when temp gets to about 100 the blossoms fall off. I think tomato jam would be delicious maybe spice with a little jalopenia or cayenne pepper. The sweet hot will be delicious. I guess your tomatoes are everglade variety?

I've always found that my tomatillos grow pretty irregularly, their shape always varies a lot. If you grow specific varieties like rio grande, gigante, purple, tamayo, etc. it will really help you in determining which has better disease and pest resistance and more consistency. Rather than just going with the one labeled "green tomatillo" which I have also not had much success with. I was gifted some queen of malinalco tomatillo seeds and their flavor is remarkable, you can just eat them right off the plant and still make delicious salsa and sauces with them too.

A few tips for you from WV & Long Island-- your bug problem can be abated naturally with trap crops once you know what's doing the chomping. I believe Alabama extension service participated in that study. The trap crop for brassicas are mustard greens & marigolds planted a distance away from your brassicas. Think of it as distracting a 3yr old from what you'd rather he not mess with. We used to plant a throw away patch of corn a distance away from our main crops to appease the "deer gods". 600mg of asprin & 1 gallon of water sprayed on nightshade varieties prevents blight. The self-watering kiddie pool (works for rain barrels too)- a drop or two of essential oil makes an inhospitable environment for mosquitoes & larva. I prefer lemon or grapefruit for pleasant scent and deterrent for other bugs. If you keep the water at or above the level you had in the pool, the oil will never hit the roots. If you should need to lift the plants out, lay a paper towel atop the water it will soak up the drop or two sheen. For rain barrels/catchments plan on repeating the drop or two after rainy days to maintain a clean source.

I'm soon moving back to my childhood home in Jacksonville Florida. It has a backyard. Haven't had a backyard since I left home at 21. Looking forward to planting my first garden. I've gleaned from this tour that tomatoes don't do well in Florida. Might try cherry tomatoes. This is the first gardening video I've seen that makes gardening less intimidating. When I was growing up we had datyl peppers, kumquats, guavas, figs, persimmons, chayote growing in the yard so I'm definitely planting those. Only the fig and persimmon survived from when my wonderful parents got too old to care for the plants. I am so grateful they gave me the home I grew up in. Looking so forward to bring life back into the once thriving beautiful yard.
