Sang Woo is an anti-hero. My favorite type of characters. An extremely complex character, who depending on the situation can be both good and bad, on the side of the protagonist, and against him, which is making them even more relatable, realistic and human-like. He isn't afraid to lie, manipulate, steal or kill. He will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goal - to survive.

Man, I loved Sangwoo and found him relatable. So many people perceive him as undeserving of sympathy compared to the other contestants without considering what the pressure of growing up in poverty, lucking out and ending up intelligent or talented in some way and expected to basically 'save' your family and carry the hopes and dreams of your whole family/community from early childhood does to you; how it ingrains in you that your only value is your academic success and how you manage to please/impress those around you, you can never ask anyone for help or admit failure without feeling like an imposter who's 'lost' your status and worth, you're the one who's meant to be competent and can't lean on anyone else, etc. All things we very clearly see in Sangwoo, like how he straight up tries to kill himself in the 2nd episode and pathologically lies to keep his mother happy and remain 'the pride of Ssangmun-dong' to her, pushes himself to play in a death game and desensitizes himself to do more and more fucked up things that clearly fucked with him all to have her never know the truth and not let her down, he also frequently brushes off Gihun whenever he brings up his childhood and keeps him at arms length, only in the last few moments he's alive is he genuinely vulnerable with his friend. None of his haters seem to consider him a victim of intergenerational poverty either because they probably think he's too "smart" for that (which isn't how intergenerational poverty works of course). The writer of Squid Game also said that Gihun and Sangwoo are essentially 2 sides of himself; Gihun being poor and raised by a single mother and Sangwoo going to the same university he did after growing up that way carrying those huge expectations (and Hwang Dong-hyuk says he also struggled financially after going to SNU). I am surprised by how little most people understand him and just view him as some greedy sociopath or 'evil' instead of someone flawed and burdened by expectation who clearly felt guilty about almost every move he made (and also might be a gambling addict like Gihun, just with stocks instead of bets) and someone who acted realistically in a terrible situation, and also ultimately cared about Gihun in spite of trying so hard not to, to be pragmatic and view everything in objectives, and of course for his mother.

I agree, sometimes society and expectations literally fuck up people. I think his character is a great representation of that. Worldwide (and specially in east Asian countries) there's so much pressure on being academically successful. And those who are not are always shamed and deemed as lazy or just bad people. I think that Sangwoo was so desperate for reaching the high expectations that people had put on him that he would go to far lengths such as completely lying to his mom to not disappoint her (wich, honestly I think most of us have done something like that at some extent. Many times we tried to hide our bad grades, or just about anything that could make our parents upset) I think that it was made very clear that Sangwoo though that he would rather be dead than a disappointment to his family. Wich I think it's something very relatable for so many people.

Sang Woo is a well written character. He wants to maintain moral superiority and not come off from his high ground but when faced with an ultimatum, falls victim to stronger desires, tarnishing his image. It’s easy to judge his actions but we all have difficulty trying to live life with virtue because of the feelings attached to our desires. It was implied that he was untrustworthy at the start when he was discovered to be sucking money out of people’s pockets. You wouldn’t have expected it from him given that he would’ve had a bright future after attending a prestigious university. He had probably intended to uphold his high moral standards and work his way up to try to earn a prosperous career, but he ultimately abandons them when he’s enticed with the prospect of big money.

Thank you - this was beautifully edited and made. For me, Sang Woo was just as deserving (if not more) of winning Squid Game as Gi-Hun. He was the smartest one there and understood the only way to survive was to play logically and without emotion. I don't think he was a bad man, but the circumstances and life pressures forced him to crime and desperation. He gave Ali the bus fare after all even though he was drowning in debt himself, and I believe he cared a lot about Gi-Hun. He wasn't afraid either to admit that his actions were to keep him alive only and not his team. It was each man for himself. Anyway... i don't know what it was about this edit, but the way you matched up the clips really puts sangwoo's life in perspective. by the end it was apparent that he did in fact feel guilty and shameful of his actions but he had gone to a point of no return and knew that there was no way for him to go back to normal life. his last words were especially quite heartbreaking tbh. "when we were kids, we would play just like this and our moms would call us in for dinner. but no one calls us anymore." it really shows how lonely sangwoo felt like he was, and also how isolating and depressing adult life can be. and his "i'm sorry" afterwords felt like a plead of forgiveness for one last time, because he was well aware that he wasn't going to be forgiven anyway. sangwoo is perhaps the most realistic character in the series and also quite captivating and full of depth in comparison to gihun (personally i think) thank you so much for making this edit, it actually made me shed a few tears lol i guess i've grown quite attached to him.
