This is such a fascinating insight into your thought process...all the different aspects of what goes into a performance or a recording of an individual piece. As an A++ professional musician, I'm sure this is all second nature to you, but, for someone like me, a non-player, I am so impressed by the detail and expertise that can produce such improvisations and beautiful, different versions of what is essentially the same composition. Kudos for sharing this perspective and your tips related to the creation of music against lead sheet melodies. I learned to play classical piano - but always enjoyed watching someone play popular "cocktail piano". I spent many years looking for the really good "arrangements" with all the notes. Hard to find. Never learned about "fake books" or "lead sheets". Or music theory. That has since changed. With your inspiration, I've now been studying the chords and theory needed to move forward.
