Before you comment! A: I know the camera quality kinda sucks in this one. I went for spooky lighting and it uh... didn't turn out as I'd hoped. It's a bit grainy, unfortunately, but hopefully this doesn't detract from the video too much. Honestly I need to invest in some proper lighting equipment. B: Monkey Island 2 is still on the way, it's just this took precedence, since ya know... Halloween. Either way, enjoy!

Correction about the 451 code. It was the code that the Looking Glass employees used to get to their office's. The scene where Max reunites with Sarah, his sister, always made me emotional because I always interpreted the scene of her asking for her toy and knowingly distracting Max. She didn't want her older brother, whom probably assumed a protective role in their relationship-- especially when she fell ill, to watch her die in front of his eyes so she asked him to get her her favorite clown doll because she knew she might distract him long enough for her to pass away without having to watch it (and he realizes this has happened when he sees her arm fall limp). Of course the world isn't perfect, so in distracting her brother with finding the doll, it ends up giving Max this guilt complex because he failed to do the one task she asked of him-- a sort of dying wish. And since this game takes a more realistic/authentic approach to loss, grief, depression, etc... it's possible that Max held a bit of irrational guilt over not finding the doll in time, and thinking if he had, it would've kept Sarah alive a little longer. (This is a pretty common thought process for anyone dealing with a dying loved one. You sometimes think, or hope, that as long as you don't say goodbye, or as long as you don't deal with the process of grief, or find the thing your loved one is asking for-- whatever the case may be, that the person won't die or that this will keep them alive a little longer. Of course this isn't true as we will all die one day, but there's always that little irrational part of your brain that you use to try to convince yourself that this is true.)

It's kinda funny how Sanitarium's storytelling, realm traveling and presentation saw influence in a number of more recent adventure games like Fran Bow, which I would like to see you cover one day, and even the Stranger Things inspired Stories Untold (which just got ported to consoles this week after being on PC for three years). I wouldn't mind seeing a full blown survival horror game take a deep dive into the themes and storytelling Sanitarium and its spiritual successors tackle, and not just have levels in hospitals and asylums like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Outlast and their respective contemporaries.

A little detail I always loved in this game is that in the first chapter, the name of the small town is "Genet." In plant ecology, a Genet is a clonal colony of genetically identical species. It's a small touch, but I think it's really neat considering the plot of that chapter.

I bought this game on GOG a couple months ago, because I saw the video PushingUpRoses did on it, and I liked the game's premise. It's so interesting, and lends itself so well to the point and click adventure game format, more than any other game genre I think. At the same time, struggling with post-cancer depression I just haven't had the courage to play it properly, all the way through, for fear that it'll make me feel things I really don't want to feel. To me, this game definitely doesn't feel like a horror game so much as a game about mental health. Depending on your state of mind, things that can feel anywhere from slightly spooky to even humorous to some people (and may well have been intended as such), can project intense feelings of hopelessness into others. On the bright side, perhaps the fact that it is able to inspire such a wide spectrum of emotions in people is proof that video games truly are art (which I do believe they are), and I certainly don't hold any of this against this game. It's a game that's very good, but also one that some people, even fans of the genre, probably should not play. Thank you for the video. The long form documentary style suits you well.

Maybe it's just because I love 'Sanitarium' - definitely an underrated gem - but I really loved this format of an extended video analyzing the entirety of the game as opposed to the usual 10-15 minute "funny review" most KZbinrs do. I've read the graininess of your cam's recording was an accident, but I think it looks great considering this is a Halloween vid. And also, it fits very well with the way the flashback cutscenes are made and look like. So yeah, not a bad accident, as far as I'm concerned. Also, Sanitarium is a great game, really. Each of the segments is unique and captivating. I feel the same vibes from it as from the game adaptation of "I have no mouth and I must scream". And well, I guess it fits the multiple characters theme too. Eternal Darkness has a bit of that too, but well, it's a very different kind of game so it doesn't feel the same. Another funny thing is the fact I've been recently watching the Children of the Corn movies for the first time, and well, hard not to think of the first chapter of Sanitarium when watching these. I'm sad you don't like Grimwall's chapter though. I think it's one of my favorites because of how alien it feels. And I actually like the character himself. Though I think Olmec is and will remain my favorite, and same goes for his chapter overall. And I'd love to hear your take on Fran Bow! Such a brilliant game!

They went to far with the second level. The first level completely sucks up to it with one guy talking about it, but then also the stain glass windows being children and a comet over a pumpkin patch. It's also the most ominous, story driven, dark and well paced level. Every other level is either the asylum + morgue with just puzzles or they just point our the conflict and villain. Were stranded on an island and a squid freak is eating us. We're in an insect hive and they're not nice so our leader obviously has evil motives. Third they straight out tells you everything and your goal. The second's name is also creepy: The Innocent Abandoned. Because it's early we still don't know anything. But this one starts really well being completely quiet and walking into an introduction to the children's deformities. It's also the only level with a backstory that's thought out and not on the nose. Finding news papers and diaries of a little girl. Also the overall mystery of a town with only children who are deformed and vines everywhere. And later you find the parents corpses in a school. The children talking about the adults going to school and the guy in the first level did so as well. It builds up and has child abuse, neglect and those in power protecting the abuser. There's also the heavy puzzles like Max going so far as digging up a dead girl for a game of hide and seek. It also has one of the biggest insane easter eggs and the biggest forth wall where you go into the red haring shack, click on the second last angel statue wing and turn into a crow, now you can roam the entire level and go farthest out to the right out of bounds and you find a hole with the developers's boss's head sticking out with more crows and village people bowing to him. He even has a little idle animation and an interaction animation where he says "gross them out". No other level goes this deep or builds a mystery like this. It goes all out and nothing compares afterwards. I just wonder wtf is that skeleton in the open tomb. There's just a dead guy in a fancy catacomb shack in the straight out open and nobody addresses this?!
