I compare six of the best midi keyboards around $120 and help you decide which one is best for you. If you are looking to buy a midi keyboard, you need to watch this video. This video is especially helpful if you are new to music production. Depending on your needs, I recommend which of these midi keyboards is right for you. The six keyboards I’m comparing here are the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini, the FLkey Mini, Native Instruments M32, Arturia Minilab 3, Akai MPK Mini MK3 and the Akai MPK Mini Plus and the Novation Launchkey Mini MK3. All these keyboards have 25 keys (except for the M32, Oxygen Pro Mini, and the MPK Mini Plus) and are capable of playing sounds through software and your DAW, and also controlling the sounds you make. I will cover features, feel, portability, build quality, and included software. These are midi controller keyboards, so they don’t make sounds on their own, they need software which is included to produce sounds. All keyboards are around $120, except for the MPK Mini Plus which costs a bit more. These midi controller keyboards work with DAWs including Ableton Live, Logic, FL Studio, and many others.

A big deal for someone like me is having a midi-out port. Small keyboards are great, but when you have a lot of outboard gear the inclusion of a midi port is the difference between whether or not you can make use of it in a lot of situations. Glad to see them showing up more in this price range/product focus

Hobbytronics is once again selling their USB MIDI host to DIN adapter, which for around 50 bucks solves the problem. You can also cobble something similar up from a RasPI or an Arduino and a DIN daughter card, but I'm willing to front a few bucks for the convenience of someone else building it for me.

I truly appreciate your videos. You are truly the man and very professional. I am a new piano player at the young age of 50. As a disabled US Marine, learning to play the piano has been a phenomenal tool for stress release. My love for piano began with my passion for praise and worship. I would like to know if you would consider doing a review of the Sunday Sounds Appropriate and software. It's idea is fantastic, but I am starting to wonder if it is my keyboard (SL88 studio), my playing, or the quality of the piano VSTs. I would love to get the grandeur, but the cost wow. I love the Sunday sounds pads and pianos, they just don't seem to sound great. What would you suggest for someone that wants pads, ambience sounds and praise and worship type piano sounds..? Thank you again for your time sir...

I bought the Arturia Essential Keys 49 mk3 and I was really disappointed by the key feel, so I sent it back after 3 days. I’ve read that the Minilab may have a better key feel but too few keys for my taste. It seems that only much more expensive products will ally a good key feel with more DAW controller options and a good sound bank. I still haven’t bought another midi keyboard yet. I’ll need to save up for a better and more expensive one. Also looking on the used gear market.

I'm between the m32, the m-audio, and the mpk mini plus. I really like the extra keys on the mpk mini plus, but it sounds like the keybed is not as good, and as someone who used to play piano, that sounds offputting. The m-audio seems like a good choice, but I don't like the lack of endless knobs. Finally the m32 seems super sleek, which I like, but it's lacking drum pads. It's not a make or break for me, but it would be the easy choice if it had some.

I don't see much point in these kinds of comparisons, as it will all come down to each individual's needs. I bought a Minilab a few years ago, because I am very tight on space, but it doesn't matter how good the keys feel because two octaves simply isn't enough for me to work with on stage. The end result is that I've pretty much never used it. I also had a KeyStep for a while and even 32 keys isn't quite enough to avoid lots of octave switching while playing. So I ended up with a Korg microKey 37. It's a very basic MIDI controller compared to those shown here but it ticks all the important boxes for me - 3 octaves of keys and proper Pitch and Mod Wheels. That's all you get - no knobs, no sliders, no drum pads, no MIDI in/out, just 3 octaves of keys and 2 wheels. Lately, though, I've had something of an epiphany, which doesn't seem to have occurred to our friendly content creator, and that is that you can use the drum pads as extra keys. That effectively gives you 33 keys to play on a 25 key controller, but it's even better than that because they don't have to be continuous. I use the pads to play very low notes, often 2 or 3 octaves below what I'm playing on the keys, and it works really, really well. But I haven't gone back to the MiniLab, I've bought a Donner DMK-25 Pro. I got it brand new, from Donner, for around US$55, and for that money it is absolutely unbeatable. It's such a cool, little gadget that it's become my favourite controller. It may not have the key feel of the MiniLab but it has four different velocity curves to tailor its response to your playing style, which actually works better for me.

Thanks for making this video! I found it very useful in picking out a mini midi controller. Ended up with both the MPK Mini 3 and Minilab 3. One update for your video is that the MPK Mini 3 can be configured to match the Minilab 3's encoders when using Analog Lab via Akai's MPK Mini Editor app. The parameter name can also be assigned to the same encoders for display. For the lower four encoders use cc# 93-Chorus, 18-Phaser, 19-Delay, 16-Reverb going left to right. For the upper four encoders use cc# 74-Brightness, 71-Timbre, 76-Time, and 77-Movement. Once you do this, the MPK Mini 3 encoders match the Minilab 3 and display the correct variable on the screen. Of course, there are no sliders in the MPK Mini 3 to match the Minilab 3. Hope this helps!

At the time the Novation SL MKII was the top midi controller. It still works perfectly today. Although I always played the drums on the keys. And faders when it comes to mixing. But you have to have something to mix, you have to get to that stage. I want to say, today there is a lack of talent. All you need is 61 keys and 2 knobs. Preferably separate pitch and modulation. As little as possible of vst, today it is a sea in which people are suffocating in general. And if possible, play an acoustic instrument, go out with friends and have fun together with acoustic music. Everything has already been played anyway. Life is short to be alone in a small room making a déjà vu

Sanjay, I really wish you would show and rate how easy it is to depress each key near the top of the keys. To me, this is the singular most important aspect of a keyboard's key feel! Thank you Sanjay C for such an excellent video, I have a boy who plays piano (he is learning but has great ears for music, and 8 years old). He started to play with other sounds and I wanted to give him some options to play, create, and record sounds and music. What could be a good option to purchase? I know that I have to think about purchasing some other stuff as you explain in your other video for a music studio. I would appreciate any help. One note, we have a Casio CT-S300 and an Alesis Virtue piano. I don't know if with the Casio I could do it and only purchase a drum pad or maybe is easy for to him use a MIDI Keyboard.

A bit late to say but the biggest downside to the Native Instrument's m32 isn't even the lack of drumpads, but rather that UNLESS you use Ableton OR Native instrument's own software/vst/etc, you'll practically lose half of the keyboard's functionality - the knobs don't do anything, and some of the transport controls end up disabled. Luckily FL studio has midi scripting which allows mapping keyboards to the DAW's controls, but I still wish I knew this before having bought the keyboard, years ago. Edit: Perhaps that has changed? - would be dope. And lastly, nice video!

thanks alot. i was looking to get a small midi keyboard with a good feel for fl studio, i dont care about drumpads, i dont care about controlling the channelrack. my first thougt was akai, because most people i watch on youtube uses it, but then i saw the flkeys that had a really good integration, but integrations that i dont feel i need, but the arturia seems really interesting, never seen it before, so thanks for enlighten me.

I was hoping there would be more new MIDI controllers announced at NAMM. In particular, I'm interested in a 49 key controller with a good feel that integrates nicely with Logic Pro. If it has scale mode, ARP, chord mode that would be nice also. What do you recommend? Maybe you could be a second roundup video focusing on this size.

I want a 37 key version of either the Arturia Keylab MK3 or the new NI Komplete Kontrol Mk3 - these are both a great compromise on size and capability. I can't really work with a 25 key keyboard and 49 is too big. I have the Novation Launchkey 37 and it's pretty great, but does not have the integration with software like Arturia and NI.

Hi Dave. I lietened your music, and your profile pic was not wrong, beautiful music, and it is exactly the music genre that I´m into too. If I could ask you, what is the equipment that you have Dave (that´s all software sound?) Thank you.

Need a suggestion please. I use logic pro with a 15 year maudio. I have an itch to upgrade now- so i can manipulate vst synth parameters. Options are arturia essential 61, maudio oxygen pro 61 and komplete A 49 or 61. Which will be the best buy. Like i said mostly what i want to do is manipulate synth parameters and anything more is great. See if you can suggest something. Someone also suggested me to get a korg nano control type setup instead of a bulky midi keyboard but i dont know much about that.

One more thought…. Are the functionality enhancements of midi 2.0, MPC and polyphonic aftertouch important enough for folks to buy a new midi controller keyboard in 2024? Maybe keybed feel, faders and encoders are still more important for now - who knows? Certainly Native Instruments released the Kontrol S series without full midi 2.0 and MPC, so they must not believe their customers want it yet.

I have a question of a complete beginner. I’m looking for an instrument my daughter could use to learn to play and maybe in the future, if she desire, to upgrade to a bigger instrument (piano etc). I want the instrument to be small, portable, preferably allow usage of headphones so she can practice and do not disturb others. I always thought midi keyboards cannot be used on its own to play but rather to control other hardware or be used with software. Am I wrong? Can any of these instruments be used to play without software/Mac/pc? If so, which one would you recommend for a 10 yo girl who wants to learn to play?

Hey Sanjay, great overview! Just wanted to know if you have a method to extend the pitch and mod wheel on the Launchkey mini? I realize the touch controls don't really do it for me, and I'm looking for a way to get the physical wheels without buying another keyboard (though it might be about the same price as the extension). Thanks!

I don't understand why there are sooooo many channels always talking about the best midi keyboard and stuff. Seriously, just get a basic one (novation, Arturia, M-audio or whatever) and start doing some music. If you need something more after months or years, then sell it and change it.

Do you think Arturia, Novation, Akai and Native Instruments will release midi 2.0, full MPC and polyphonic aftertouch to catch up with the Korg KeyStage in 2024? Will we be forced to buy new hardware, or will vendors just release firmware upgrades?
